One Piece Chapter 12, page 13-14: Chapter 12: DOG

Boodle explains his perspective as Chouchou quietly eats his food. 'Chouchou's a smart dog... I think he knows his master is dead.' Luffy listens silently from his cage. Nami asks, 'Then why does he still guard the store?' Boodle, looking at the shop, answers, 'It's his treasure. And I think that Chouchou still guards the store......because it's all that's left of his beloved master.

Boodle sighs, smoking his pipe, and says, 'But he won't budge from this spot. He'd rather starve to death than leave his post.' Nami looks at Chouchou with deep sympathy. Suddenly, a terrifying roar echoes through the town: 'ROOWWRR!!!' Nami gasps, 'What's that horrible roar!?' Boodle trembles, exclaiming, 'I-It must be Mohji, the Lion Tamer!!' Luffy notices the dust rising in the distance and warns, 'Something's coming this way!' Boodle shouts, 'Run!!!' while Luffy desperately calls out to the dog, 'Give me that key, dog!' Chouchou merely barks, 'Wurf!
