One Piece Chapter 1.1, page 16-17: Romance Dawn (Version 1)

Shanks holds young Luffy close in the water, smiling gently despite his injury. He comforts the crying boy, saying, "IT'S NO BIG DEAL. JUST ONE ARM... I'M GLAD YOU'RE SAFE.". Luffy continues to sob uncontrollably. Time passes, and the flashback moves to the day Shanks' crew is preparing to set sail from the village. The villagers gather at the harbor. Luffy asks Shanks, "IS IT TRUE YOU'RE NOT COMING BACK AFTER YOU SET OUT THIS TIME!?". Shanks replies, "YEAH. WE STAYED HERE FOR QUITE A WHILE. IT'S ABOUT TIME WE LEAVE.". Luffy begs, "THEN TAKE ME WITH YOU!". Shanks firmly refuses, "NO WAY."

Young Luffy yells defiantly at Shanks, "I WILL. EVEN THOUGH I'LL ALWAYS BE A HAMMER!! SOME DAY, I'LL DEFINITELY BECOME A PIRATE!!". Shanks' crew watches with smiles. Shanks teases him, "YOU CAN'T FIGHT. THERE IS NO WAY YOU COULD BECOME A PIRATE!!". Shanks then reaches out and places his straw hat onto Luffy's head, saying, "THEN I'LL LEND YOU THIS HAT.". Luffy looks up, tears welling in his eyes. Shanks smiles warmly and says, "IT'S MY TREASURED HAT. COME AND RETURN IT SOME DAY AS A GREAT PIRATE.". Luffy grins through his tears.
