One Piece Chapter 1.1, page 2-3: Romance Dawn (Version 1)

A massive pirate ship with a dragon figurehead sails across the rough sea. Onboard, the crew is shouting in excitement, "THE VILLAGE HAS COME INTO VIEW! EVERYONE, WE'RE DISEMBARKING!!!!" and "HOOO OH!!!" amidst loud rumbling sound effects. In a small boat nearby, a young man wearing a straw hat looks through binoculars. He spots the ship and mutters, "HM? THAT'S..." and "OHH-HHHH". Looking closer, he sees their Jolly Roger—a skull set against a crescent moon. He grins widely and exclaims, "JOLLY ROGER!!" and "LUCKY LUCKY!! THE SYMBOL OF DEATH!"

The title "ROMANCE DAWN" is displayed in large, stylized letters across the top of the page. The young man in the straw hat paddles his small boat toward the massive pirate ship, shouting, "A PIRATE SHIP!!!" and "ALRIGHT!". A caption introduces him: "NAME: MONKEY D. LUFFY". In the smaller panels, Luffy enthusiastically paddles his boat, which has a black sail with his own straw-hat Jolly Roger. He yells, "SET SAIL!! SPEEDING MERUHEN GOU!" as he rows. A translator's note explains: "'MERUHEN' MEANS FAIRY TALE AND 'GOU' MEANS SHIP."
