One Piece Chapter 1.1, page 32-33: Romance Dawn (Version 1)

Gyari's pirates load a large chest of stolen treasure onto their ship, laughing, "HA HA HA HA THIS IS A GOOD HAUL!! FOR SUCH A SMALL TOWN ANYWAY.". Gyari stands over the tied-up Luffy, grinning maliciously: "WHAT'S LEFT IS... THROWING THIS GUY INTO THE SEA!". Luffy deadpans, "PLEASE SAVE ME.", to which Gyari snaps, "AS IF, IDIOT!!!". From a distance, the villagers watch with guilt. One says, "WE WERE SURE HE WAS GYARI..." while another adds, "WE'VE DONE SOMETHING BAD TO HIM...!". The headman wonders, "BUT JUST WHO IS HE... HE WAS DEFINITELY THE FIRST PERSON TO COME OFF THAT SHIP.". Shiruku watches sadly, saying, "I DON'T KNOW EITHER BUT... HE'S NOT A BAD PERSON...!!"

Gyari picks up Luffy's straw hat, examining it: "OH, WHAT'S THIS? YOU SEEM TO BE UNSETTLED BECAUSE OF THIS HAT.". Luffy's expression instantly darkens, and he warns Gyari, "THAT'S NOT LIKE YOU...". Gyari sneers, "YOU REALLY MADE A MOCKERY OF THIS GREAT PIRATE, GYARI-SAMA.". Luffy struggles against his ropes, shouting, "AH!! GIVE THAT BACK...!!". Gyari deliberately lets the hat fall to the ground, saying, "OH, I DROPPED IT. IF IT'S IN SUCH A PLACE, I MIGHT ACCIDENTALLY... STEP ON IT? HA HA HA.". Luffy's eyes fill with intense rage, and he growls, "STEP ON IT AND I'LL KILL YOU.". Shiruku watches, remembering Luffy's words: "THIS HAT IS MY TREASURE, BUT IT DOESN'T BELONG TO ME. I WANT TO BECOME THAT KIND OF PIRATE AS WELL!"
