One Piece Chapter 31, page 4-6: THE TRUTH

Kaya rushes to Merry's side, crying out in panic, "MERI! WAKE UP!! WHAT HAPPENED!!? YOU CAN'T DIE!" Merry weakly opens his eyes, coughing up blood: "COUGH UGH... COUGH". He weakly gasps, "OJOU-SAMA... GOOD... YOU'RE SAFE..." Kaya is bewildered, replying, "I'M SAFE...? WHAT... WHAT ARE YOU SAYING..." Suddenly, she looks up in shock as she realizes who did this, gasping, "CLAHADOR!!!

Merry, crying and bleeding, confirms her worst fears: "HE... HE TRIED TO KILL ME..." Kaya is stunned, stammering, "!!? WHA...?! HOW... THIS COULDN'T BE REAL!!" Merry continues, explaining that if anything had happened to her, he would feel as though he had betrayed her parents, before delivering the final shocking truth: "HE'S A PIRATE!

The realization hits Kaya with devastating force. She remembers Usopp's desperate warnings from the day before: "AFTER TOMORROW, YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH! JUST... TAKE THIS CHANCE TO RUN! PLEASE LISTEN TO ME!" Tears stream down her face as she cries, "THEN YESTERDAY... ALL THAT STUFF USOPP-SAN SAID WAS TRUE...!!? NONE OF US BELIEVED ANYTHING HE SAID! YES... THINKING BACK... HE ALONE KNEW THE TRUTH, AND TRIED EVERYTHING TO WARN US... BUT WE... WE'VE MISUNDERSTOOD THAT MAN'S GOOD INTENTIONS... THAT BRAVE YOUNG MAN, HE TRIED SO HARD TO SAVE THIS VILLAGE BUT WAS INSTEAD CHASED AWAY!
