One Piece Chapter 1.1, page 13-14: Romance Dawn (Version 1)

In the flashback, Shanks looks at young Luffy and says, "LISTEN, LUFFY. YOU SAY YOU LOVE THE SEA AND ADVENTURE, AND I VALUE THAT SPIRIT. BUT IN EXCHANGE FOR THAT FREEDOM YOU RISK YOUR LIFE!!". His crewmates agree, "CAPTAIN SHANKS, WITHOUT THAT WE WOULDN'T HAVE DREAMS, RIGHT?" and "YOU HAVE A STRONG WILL TO GO OUT TO SEA IN A SHIP EVERY DAY DESPITE BEING A HAMMER. Meanwhile, young Luffy is sitting by a treasure chest, eating a strange, swirly fruit. He makes a disgusted face, saying, "HORRIBLE." and "WHAT IS THIS?". Shanks and his crew suddenly notice and freak out. Shanks screams, "OI!!! YOU! ISN'T THAT THE 'GOMU GOMU' FRUIT!! HE ONE WE STOLE FROM AN ENEMY SHIP! THE FRUIT FROM THE ILLUSION TREE THAT BEARS FRUIT AT MOST EVERY 50 YEARS!!". Shanks grabs Luffy and shakes him violently, yelling, "EATING THAT MAKES YOU UNABLE TO SWIM!! FOR-EVER!!! ENTERING THE WATER MAKES YOU LOSE YOUR ENERGY!!". Luffy, completely unfazed, smiles and says, "GOMU GOMU FRUIT?...WEIRD!! TOO BAD, I GUESS I ATE THE FRUIT FROM THE ILLUSION TREE." Shanks and his crew scream in horror, "NO WAY!!!" and "YOU IDIOT!!!".

In the flashback, young Luffy sits in a small rowboat on the ocean, smiling confidently. He thinks, "IT DOESN'T MATTER. IF I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO SWIM, THEN I JUST HAVE TO NEVER FALL OVERBOARD. NO MATTER WHAT, I'M GOING TO BECOME A PIRATE AND LIVE FREELY. Suddenly, a giant sea monster with sharp teeth erupts from the water and bites Luffy's boat completely in half with a loud "CRUNCH". Luffy is thrown into the air, crying out, "AH!". He splashes into the water and begins to sink, flailing his arms in terror and screaming, "UWAAAAAH SOMEONE HELP ME!!! I CAN'T SWIM".
