The Lake of Bandits

At the lake in the center of Punk Hazard, Luffy's team rows across in Usopp's plant-boat while enemies on the shore fire at them. Luffy shouts, "They're firing bazookas again!" Usopp panics, "They're trying to sink our boat!" and another voice demands, "What's wrong with these guys...?" The blasts hit the water and throw the banana boat into violent spray. The page ends in a huge explosion of water and smoke, with someone screaming, "Aaaa aaaarg hhh!!!" The scene makes the lake crossing immediately dangerous: the Straw Hats are not simply battling wind and boiling water anymore, but organized attackers trying to destroy their only way across.

I won't try to make friends wid dem anymore..." Then the enemy takes aim again, and Luffy says, "Oi, Usopp, you hold these two for a minute. I'm going to slice those weirdos apart...!!" Usopp protests that he cannot hold them much longer.

Zoro is suddenly pulled underwater. Luffy shouts, "Oi!! What's wrong, Zoro?!" and Zoro answers, "Under the water...!!" Something erupts from beneath the lake, and Usopp screams, "Sharks?! In a lake?!" Boss laughs at them: "Wohoho hohohoha! Ignorant fools! Strictly speaking, this is part of the ocean." Beneath the surface, shark-like creatures circle and strike. The surprise matters because the lake is not normal freshwater. It is ocean water trapped inside the crater of Punk Hazard, which means the Devil Fruit users are even more helpless and the predators inside the lake can still be sea creatures.

Boss explains the lake's origin with cruel delight. The battle between Akainu and Aokiji created a massive hole like a bomb crater, and "ocean water flooded in to fill it through the giant cracks in the island on either side!!!" Blow them to pieces!!!" Usopp says, "Oh, we're doomed on so many levels!!" and Luffy screams, "Fire!!!" Before the centaurs can finish them, their weapons fail. The gun barrels are suddenly covered in ice, and the attackers are shocked: "What is it?! What just happened?!!!" The centaur leader says, "I know... but hold on a second. I think I recognise these people from somewhere!!" He decides, "I'll take the fourth from the right... I like the look of the one next to him..." Luffy, Robin, and the others stare at the warm coats and gear. Then they shout together, "Those clothes look nice and warm!!!" The centaurs panic. One cries, "G-good luck, guys!! Ge' some clothes for me, too!!" Another recognizes Luffy: "That's one of the rookies from the terrible generation of two years ago!! I knew I recognised them... I remember that hat...!! It's Fire Fist's younger brother!!! The 400 million bounty pirate, Straw Hat Luffy!!!" Others scream that common thieves are after their coats.
