Battleship Bags

At the ship scrapyard of Navy Branch G-1, Marines discuss the old training custom called "battleship bags." They explain that the armored hulls of scrapped battleships have been caved in with punches, and one asks whether the name means punching bags. Someone says Vice Admiral Garp has made this part of his daily routine since youth, and another notes that Aokiji, the former admiral and Garp's protege, was responsible for some of the damage too. The rules were that no Haki or Devil Fruit abilities were allowed while working on the battleship bags. A Marine reflects that no one is born a hero; strength is something you have to earn.

On Hachinosu in the New World, Garp sends Sanjuan Wolf flying into the sea. Pirates panic, shouting that Garp is scary and that they need to pull Wolf up quickly before he drowns. The gigantic pirate splashes down beside the island, and the people of Pirate Island react in terror at the old Marine's power. Vasco Shot, seeing the legendary hero in action, prepares to attack with "Heavy Drinker: Hearth-Fire!!" as flames spread through the town. Vasco Shot's alcohol-fueled flames turn parts of Pirate Island into a blazing inferno, and the pirates shout that the island is burning. Vasco calls out "Pirate Jack-o-Lantern!!" while others ask whether Garp is trying to destroy Pirate Island. The Blackbeard Pirates complain that if the town burns down, Captain Teach will kill them. Despite being totally outnumbered, Garp grins and presses forward, terrifying the pirates. The Marine ship reports to Vice Admiral Garp that the wounded and all rescued slaves are aboard, and that they are setting sail. Prince Grus warns that they cannot underestimate the Titanic Captains, while Koby worries that he should have left with the others and that everyone is doomed. Garp orders Koby, Grus, and Helmeppo to listen: head straight to the coast, and they will be fine. He tells them not to die on him. Despite the Blackbeard Pirates closing in and Kuzan blocking the way, Garp remains focused on getting the younger Marines out alive.

As Koby, Grus, and Helmeppo try to escape, pirates reveal they still have a hostage and cry for help. Koby rushes toward the hostage, but the others realize it is a trap and shout that Koby is an idiot. Shiryu appears from invisibility and slashes toward Koby. Garp reacts instantly, throws himself between them, and takes the stab meant for Koby. The attack pierces Garp, shocking everyone. Koby realizes too late that he was tricked, while Shiryu smiles after landing a serious blow on the old hero. This page marks the turning point: Garp's protective instinct leaves him wounded.

Back in the present, Garp and Kuzan clash directly, exchanging a massive punch that blasts both men apart. The impact shakes Hachinosu and sends debris flying as pirates scream. Koby calls for Vice Admiral Garp. Garp lies injured while Pizarro, using the Island-Island Fruit, speaks through the island itself and laughs that the Marines' friends think they are safe because the ship set sail. He warns them not to underestimate his island fruit and says they should not have powered the pirate hive if they did not want to get swarmed. Avalo Pizarro, Fourth Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates, uses his island power to form a huge arm over the sea and prepare to crush the Marine ship. Hibari, thawing on board, asks where Koby-senpai is, and the Marines tell her he will be right behind them and that they are just glad she is safe. Pizarro announces that if Vice Admiral Garp and his rising stars fail to rescue the hero Captain Koby, tomorrow's headlines will be ready for Blackbeard and Pirate Island. Koby begs Pizarro not to do it because there are innocent civilians on board, but Pizarro declares he will crush their foolish plan. Garp, battered on the ground, tells Koby not to lose his head: justice will prevail.

Pizarro's enormous island-hand looms over the Marine ship, ready to crush it while the rescued civilians and Marines panic. Koby pleads, "No... don't do it! Please!" and warns that innocent civilians are on board. Pizarro continues narrating his desired headline: "Vice Admiral Garp and his squad of rising stars fail to rescue the hero, Captain Koby." The ship rocks in the water, the giant hand descends, and Garp, despite his wounds, watches with clenched resolve. The chapter ends on the threat of Pizarro's attack, with Garp's words still ringing: "Don't lose your head...!! Justice will prevail!!"
