Nearby, a Marine captain walks away as someone shouts, “LET ME GO! I PROMISE I'LL PAY FOR IT NEXT TIME!” and “YOU NEVER LEARN, DO YOU, YOU LITTLE CAT BURGLAR!” with sound effects “ずん”. In another scene, young Bellemere runs yelling “WHY YOU LITTLE BRAT!” and “BELLEMERE!” while villagers comment, “THEY SAID BELLEMERE'S ORANGES TASTED BAD!” and “IT'S FINE, IT'S JUST A LITTLE KID'S FIGHT. In the next panels, young Nami smiles through tears while Belle-mère's words echo: "DON'T EVER LOSE THE STRENGTH TO SMILE NO MATTER WHEN..." and "IT'S ALRIGHT IF PEOPLE DON'T PRAISE OR COMPLIMENT YOU!" The scene shifts to young Nojiko and Nami sobbing on the ground as the final line reads, "YOU'LL SURELY COME ACROSS FUN TIMES AS WELL...! BECAUSE IF YOU CONTINUE TO LIVE ON,"

A massive explosion tears through Cocoyasi Village fields with huge sound effects "うわあああ" and "んあああああ". Young Nami screams "BELLE-MERE!" in terror. The scene cuts to Arlong laughing maniacally with his jaws wide open: "SHA HA HA HA! UNDER MY RULE, THOSE WITHOUT MONEY SHALL ALL DIE! HAHAHAHA!"

Arlong looms over fallen villagers and demands, "IS THAT CLEAR, YOU PATHETIC HUMANS!I" In the present-day scene at Arlong Park, young Nami excitedly shows her maps and shouts, "I'M BACK! I DREW THOSE MAPS! SET SAIL WITH THOSE MAPS...!" Hatchan reacts with "NYU!I" while Arlong's fish-men examine the charts. Arlong grins and says, "I FOUND SOME SEA CHARTS IN THIS HOUSE! ARLONG, LOOK! LOOK AT ALL THIS!" Arlong then remarks, "A LITTLE GIRL WAS ABLE TO DRAW THESE EXCELLENT MAPS...!I OHI COLOUR ME IMPRESSED..." as young Nami beams, "NAMI, NO! GET AWAY FROM THEM!"

Young Nami struggles and cries, "NOOOO! LET GO OF ME! LET GO OF NAMI, YOU...!" Arlong's crew discusses her value: "SHE'S A VALUABLE TALENT. BRING HER ALONG, HACHI!" and "SURE. SHE'S A VALUABLE THING!" One fish-man reassures, "AH, DON'T WORRY. WE WON'T HARM HER. WE'RE ONLY BORROWING HER, THAT'S ALL. AS LONG AS WE MADE THE PAYMENT!I" Young Nami shouts back, "DIDN'T YOU SAY YOU WOULDN'T HARM ANYONE, STOP RIGHT THERE!" Genzo yells "KUROOBI." and "LET GO OF THAT GIRL RIGHT NOW!" while Nojiko screams "GEN! HELP!"

A fierce clash erupts as a uniformed man with a cap swings his sword wildly, shouting "MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!" while another figure blocks the strike amid impact lines and debris. The uniformed man is knocked back with a pained "AGH...". In a flashback panel, a determined voice cries, "I'M... I'M COMING TO SAVE YOU, NAMI!" as a swordsman leaps through a destroyed building. Genzo appears with a shocked expression, sweat flying. Nami, tears streaming, pleads desperately, "SO PLEASE! I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO DIE ANYMORE!" Genzo reassures her, "IT'S FINE! DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME! YOU DON'T HAVE TO HELP ME!" From behind, villagers block the path, declaring "WE WON'T LET YOU THROUGH!" and "SO JUST LEAVE NAMI HERE AND GO!" as Genzo turns away with a grim "!!I" and "GATN..." sound effect.

Arlong Pirates rampage through Cocoyasi Village. A massive fish-man-like figure smashes structures with a powerful overhead strike, sending villagers flying amid "ワアアアア" and "アアア" screams and debris. An unseen speaker notes, "THEY ARE OUR FIRST SOURCE OF INCOME, AFTER ALL." Another voice replies, "GO LIGHTLY ON THEM...". A close-up shows a spinning weapon with the command "OPEN SPIN". The sequence ends on a wide view of the devastated main street lined with damaged wooden buildings, scattered debris, fallen palm trees, and a long banner, marked page 156.

Inside a dimly lit room, injured villagers lie bandaged in beds. Genzo, covered in bandages and an eye patch, speaks with others: "WE WERE NAIVE...! THE MARINES WON'T COME TO SAVE US EITHER." "THIS ISLAND IS NOW COMPLETELY UNDER THEIR CONTROL..." "OF SENDING NAMI AND NOJIKO AWAY ON A BOAT IS NOW..." "EVEN OUR IDEA." "ALL THE SHIPS IN THE VILLAGE HAVE BEEN SUNK...". A close-up shows a fish-man-like figure's face as someone reflects, "AND THAT THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE WAS TO LIVE UNDER THEIR RULE..." and "THAT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO ESCAPE FROM THIS SITUATION...! BELLEMERÉ MUST'VE ALREADY REALIZED BACK THEN." Outside by a grave marked with a cross, Nojiko kneels and cries, "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO...I" "BELLEMERÉ...!" A crowd of Cocoyasi villagers gathers in the ruined street, listening intently. Genzo stands before them, declaring, "THE TIME FOR US TO DECIDE IS NOW...!" "IT SEEMS THEY'RE PLANNING ON SETTING UP BASE ON THIS ISLAND!" "WE'VE FIGURED OUT WHERE THE ARLONG PIRATES ARE." In a close-up, Genzo shouts passionately, "OR ACCEPT THEIR RULE, UNDER WHICH WE'LL LIVE UNDER CONSTANT FEAR OF DEATH, AND HOPE THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL ONE DAY COME TO SAVE US!I" "SHALL WE GO OUT FIGHTING, BRAVING DEATH,". A marine captain with a cap and medal retorts angrily, "BUT THE MARINE HEADQUARTERS ALREADY HAVE THEIR HANDS FULL WITH THE GRAND LINE. SO HOPING FOR THEM TO COME ALL THE WAY OUT TO THESE REMOTE REGIONS IS USELESS!" "NO... THE ONLY ONES IN THE GOVERNMENT THAT CAN HOPE TO MATCH THESE MONSTERS, ARE THOSE FROM THE MARINE HEADQUARTERS IN GRAND LINE...!" with a "SPIN SPIN" sound effect, marked page 158.

The villagers of Cocoyasi stand together in anger. A bandaged man shouts, "I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO LIVE WITH MYSELF, ME TOO! IF I ABANDONED A HELPLESS CHILD JUST TO SAVE MYSELF!" Another yells, "I'LL FIGHT!" A helmeted fighter declares, "I, FOR ONE, WILL NOT ABANDON NAMI!" An older man reacts with "HMI" The crowd surges forward, weapons raised, shouting "SO WE MIGHT AS WELL FIGHT! THE REST OF US ARE GOING TO GET BLAMED ANYWAYS! WELL IF YOU'RE GOING TO FIGHT," as motion lines and impact effects fill the street. In the distance Nami appears alone. Villagers cry out in relief: "THANK GOD...!", "NAMI!", "NAMI!", "ARE YOU ALRIGHT!I" and "NACCHAN!" as they rush toward her.

Nami stands with a forced smile, sweat on her face, and declares, "AND BECOME THEIR CARTOGRAPHER. I... I'VE DECIDED TO JOIN THE ARLONG PIRATES..." The villagers react in shock. One asks, "DID THEY DO SOMETHING TO YOU!I DID THEY DO ANYTHING HORRIBLE TO YOU!I" Another demands, "NAMI, WHAT'RE YOU SAYINGI ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!I" Nami's expression hardens. A villager grabs her shoulders and shouts, "NAMI! NO! TELL ME THE TRUTH! THEN THEY MUST'VE THREATENED YOU! RIGHT!I" Nami looks down and answers quietly, "No..."

Nami yanks her arm free, shouting "LET GO OF ME!" A Marine captain stares in disbelief. Villagers gasp, "IT CAN'T BE..." Close-ups reveal the Arlong Pirates tattoo on Nami's arm. She turns away as voices call "NAMI!" Nami then holds up a thick stack of bills with a wide, strained smile and says, "L-LOOK... THEY SAID THEY'LL BUY ME ANYTHING I LIKE...! LOOK AT ALL THIS MONEY I GOT..."

A villager screams, "HOW COULD I AFTER YOU JOINED THOSE PIRATES! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THEY'RE LIKE!I I WON'T EVER FORGIVE YOU!" Nami clutches her head in anguish as the tattoo is shown again. Another villager yells, "IF LIVING HONESTLY MEANS GETTING KILLED LIKE BELLEMERE... THEN I WANT NO PART OF IT!" Nojiko cries out, "THAT'S ENOUGH, NOJIKO..." and "BELLEMERE DIED FOR OUR SAKE!I" while a Marine watches. The final panel shows the group standing before Bellemere's house as the confrontation continues.

Young Nami, tears streaming down her face, screams at Arlong, "I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE YOU STEP FOOT IN THIS VILLAGE AGAIN!" Arlong roars back, "GET OUT OF MY SIGHT, NAMI!!" The impact sends Nami flying backward down the street. Villagers watch in shock as Genzo mutters, "HOW COULD SHE DO SUCH A STUPID THING..." Nojiko stands silently, whispering "NAMI..." In a sunlit memory, young Nami and Nojiko stand before Bellemere's grave. Nami thinks, "NAMI LOVED BELLEMERE! THAT'S NOT IT...!" while Arlong's foot presses down in the present as he wonders, "DID SHE NEVER CONSIDER BELLEMERE AS HER MOTHER...!I"

At the seaside graves marked by crosses, Nojiko asks young Nami, "DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT BELLEMERE SAID TO US ONCEI" Nami replies "HMI" Later, the sisters sit together. Nojiko recalls, "SHE SAID AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO LIVE ON, WE'LL SURELY COME ACROSS FUN TIMES AS WELL...!" Nami answers, "...YEAH." Nojiko continues, "THAT'S WHY WE HAVE TO HELP OURSELVES...! BECAUSE THE ARLONG PIRATES WOULD EASILY DESTROY THEM! BUT THEY WERE ALL SO EASILY SUNK. I'M CERTAIN... THAT THE GOVERNMENT WON'T EVER SEND HELP TO THIS ISLAND. AFTER ARLONG TOOK ME TO THEIR SHIP, 5 MARINE SHIPS CAME AFTER THEM." Nami listens quietly with a question mark hovering above her.

Nojiko stands over young Nami, who sits with arms crossed. Nami declares, "WELL I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DO IT MYSELF! BECAUSE I KNOW EVERYONE IS DOING THEIR BEST JUST TO PAY THE TRIBUTE. BUT EVEN AN ADULT WORKING HIS ENTIRE LIFE AWAY PROBABLY COULDN'T RAISE UP THAT MUCH MONEY! YUP. IN RETURN, I HAVE TO JOIN THEIR CREW AND DRAW MAPS FOR THEM..." Nami adds, "I CAN STILL SMILE EVEN WHEN LOOKING AT HIS FACE...! IT'S FINE!" Nojiko warns, "BUT... WON'T IT BE HARDI YOU'LL HAVE TO WORK WITH THE ONE WHO KILLED BELLEMERE..." Nami replies, "I... I DON'T EVER WANT THAT TO HAPPEN AGAIN...! AND IF I ASK ANYONE FOR HELP AGAIN... THEY'LL JUST END UP INJURED...!" In a close-up, Nami smiles brightly and states, "AND THAT I'LL FIGHT ALONE! I'VE DECIDED TO NEVER CRY AGAIN!"
