At Marineford, the pirates and Marines react to Garp taking up a position in front of Ace. Akainu warns Whitebeard, "Don't go ruining the town...!!" Whitebeard answers, "I thought I told you to try and stop me!!!" Around them, the Whitebeard Pirates keep charging and shout, "Clear a path to Ace!!!" and "Show them the strength of the new world!!!" Their allied captains cut and blast through Marines, driving the battle closer to the execution platform even while the admirals and Garp hold the most dangerous positions.

Ace watches the battle from the execution platform and remembers his past. In the flashback, people ask whether he means "Gol D. Roger" and whether he knows why so many people are hurt by pirates. Ace hears people say it is all Gold Roger's fault, calling Roger someone who should not have been born and "the worst scum in the world." A young Ace reacts violently when someone insults Roger, while another voice asks why he is getting mad and calls him a runt.

Ace's memories continue. Dadan asks what Ace did when he went into town, saying people report that a kid almost killed some delinquents and made a huge mess. Ace thinks, "Oh... I thought they were actually dead." Later someone asks if he wants to know about Roger, but Dadan snaps, "Roger!? Don't even mention that damn name, kid!!" Garp visits Ace and says he has heard Ace has been causing trouble, then mentions Luffy, saying his grandson is being raised well. Ace finally asks Garp, "Should I... have been born...?"

Garp answers Ace's question with hard-earned patience. He tells Ace, "Keep on living... and you'll find out." The flashback gives way to the present as Luffy, still barely conscious, calls, "Iva...!!" and tells Ivankov, "This is my last request...!! Please listen...!!!" Ivankov is shocked that Luffy is still conscious. On the battlefield, Jimbei urges Ace to wait and pirates shout, "Clear a path!!!" and "We'll be right there!!!" while Luffy mutters that the situation is awful.

The pirates continue screaming encouragement toward the platform: "Ace!!!" "We'll save you!!!" "Just you wait, Ace!!!" and "Don't give up!!!" Garp stands with his back to the battlefield as the shouts surround him. Ace thinks of his old man, his little brother, and his brothers in arms; their blood is being spilled all around him, and he admits that he is happy enough to be unable to stop his tears. Elsewhere, Buggy wakes up from being frozen and complains about what the Marines have done to him.

The battle turns suddenly as Whitebeard coughs and clutches at his chest. His allies scream, "Boss!!?" and "Whitebeard!!!" while Akainu coldly says, "Even you can't overcome old age..." The shock travels through the battlefield as Whitebeard drops to one knee in front of Luffy. He spits blood with "Becha!!" and curses the timing, groaning, "God damn it...!!!" The commanders and pirates realize that their captain's body is failing in the middle of the war.

Marco sees Whitebeard falter and cries out that this is what he was most afraid of, knowing that fights can be won or lost in a single instant. Kizaru takes advantage of Marco's distraction, commenting that he does not look focused, and shoots him down while nearby pirates scream, "Marco!!!" At the same time Jozu turns his attention toward Whitebeard, shouting for him, and Aokiji uses that opening to attack Jozu. The commanders' worry for Whitebeard becomes the exact weakness the admirals exploit.
Akainu presses the advantage without hesitation. While Whitebeard is doubled over, Akainu's magma fist erupts forward and punches into Whitebeard's torso. The page focuses on the brutal impact: Akainu's stern face, Whitebeard's massive body bending around the blow, and Ace staring in horror from the platform. The battlefield briefly falls into stunned silence as the Marines' admiral lands a devastating hit on the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates.

Ivankov refuses Luffy's request for another shot of tension hormones, calling it crazy and warning that Luffy's body cannot take it. Ivankov reminds him that he was almost killed by poison, that during the Impel Down fight he was already pushed to his limit, and that if he goes further he could seriously die. Luffy, panting and barely able to stand, insists, "If I die, that's fine...!! Let me fight, Iva...!!" He says he has to do all he can and that if he cannot save Ace, then he would want to die.

Luffy bites down and declares, "I'd want to die!!!" He demands, "Right now... give me the strength to fight!!!" Ivankov hesitates, knowing how dangerous it is, but finally says that if he lets Luffy die he will not be able to look Dragon in the eye. Ivankov agrees with a strained "Fine..." while Luffy lies battered and breathing "Haa... Haa..." The choice is grim: Luffy will burn through whatever remains of his body for one more chance to reach Ace.

Ivankov injects Luffy again. Someone shouts, "Hey, what did you...!!!" while Luffy convulses and screams. Ivankov tells him, "Do what you will!!!" Luffy releases an enormous roar, "Hwoooooohhhh!!!" that rings across Marineford. The battlefield turns toward him as Ace whispers, "Luffy..." and Garp watches in silence. Luffy stands amid the smoke, forcing himself back into the war through sheer will and the dangerous hormone boost Ivankov has given him.
