Death Doesn't Count as an Apology

On the Thousand Sunny, Luffy wakes into fury and immediately punches Franky in the face, shouting, "That bastard! Making my shadow..." Franky tries to stop him: "Calm down! Moria isn't here!" Sanji and Zoro sit in stunned silence, still recovering from the theft of their shadows. The ship and the docked Thriller Bark entrance come into view, and someone recognizes the place: "Huh? This place is... It's the Sunny." Another asks, "Sunny!? How did we end up back here...?" The three strongest fighters are awake again, but the first thing they understand is not safety; it is that their bodies have been returned to the ship while their shadows remain in enemy hands.

Zoro rises and feels the wrongness immediately. "No... it wasn't a dream. My shadow is gone...!!! This is an eerie feeling..." Luffy, meanwhile, cannot focus on the shadow problem while his stomach is empty. Robin explains that because they only had large quantities of food on the ship, the zombies took everything else and left only preserved food behind. Luffy storms in, yelling, "Hey! It's terrible!!! This is more important!!! There's nothing to eat here!!! Cheese and crackers aren't enough to fill me up!!! I want meeeeeat!!!" Sanji worries for a different reason: "By the way, I don't see Nami anywhere...?" Zoro mutters, "Man, how dishonorable... I've let my guard down...!!" and Luffy mourns, "We lost our pirate lunchboxes, too~~... With only cheese... we just can't..."

Sanji explodes when he hears Nami was taken. "Kid-na-p-ped!!? Why the hell didn't you chase the kidnapper to the ends of the earth!!? Who in the world did it!? I'll get her back immediately!!!" Usopp, crushed under Sanji's fury, apologizes: "I'm sorry!!! But the circumstances made it like that, not me...!!! Anyway, please listen to the whole story!!" Usopp then forces the crew to sort priorities: "Okay, listen! There are two important things we can't afford not to get back." The group names them aloud: "Nami!" and "Food!" before Usopp adds the third, "Our 'shadows' too, right? That makes it three." Robin starts to point out that one of those is not a priority, but Usopp insists that Nami and their shadows are the main issue. Outside, something heavy shakes the Sunny and the dock, drawing everyone's alarmed "Wha... What the!?"

The shaking turns out to be Oars rampaging across Thriller Bark, and Sanji mishears the danger through his obsession. "Marriage~~~~!? Are you shitting me~~!? Shit! I'll never permit it! He must have some balls to marry Nami, and..." Luffy, hearing about the giant body that ate and shouted like him, asks whether they can make a zombie like that because he is a behemoth. Zoro stays practical: "In that case, we know the identities of Luffy and the cook, right?" Chopper confesses that the Shichibukai frightened him, and Luffy asks what the zombie looked like. Chopper says the enemy gave off a familiar aura and had the same equipment as Zoro. Luffy realizes it was not him, while Zoro asks the key question: if they throw salt into the mouths of those three zombies, they will regain their shadows, right? For now, the plan becomes simple enough to move.

The crew praises the discovery of the zombies' weakness, and Luffy suddenly brightens when he hears another name. "What!? You met Brook!?" Usopp explains that it was the skeleton who told them about the weakness, then came to get them first. Franky describes how, when he asked Brook a rather rude question and tried to make him a comrade, Brook rejected it by denying the completeness of his own existence. Even so, after speaking with him, Franky was convinced: "He's a real man!!!" Franky begins walking away while the others call after him to answer the question. The page turns Brook from a strange skeleton into someone with weight and dignity; whatever his secret is, it was enough to earn Franky's respect immediately.

Franky challenges the way Brook has been living. He asks whether Brook knows how people react when he appears with that appearance, calling him "A talking skeleton...? Becoming friends... with such a disgusting being?" and warning that anyone who goes in front of people like that will be stained with shame. Brook listens silently while Franky presses deeper: "Even if you get out of this evil sea... you'll follow the same fate as those years of despair you wasted here." Franky repeats Brook's own words back to him: "You said, 'I'm lonelier than death,' didn't you? If I were you, I'd have given up long ago." But he does not say it to insult him. He tells Brook not to hide the vital part from them and asks him to continue living like a gentleman long enough to explain the promise he made to his nakama.

Brook begins the truth simply. "It's very simple... Long ago... our pirate crew left one of our... nakama behind. It was a hard decision for us..." The silhouette of Brook stands small against the strange, frozen trees as he explains that they promised to definitely come back to that place, then departed with their ship. But their voyage ended in annihilation: "And then, we were annihilated in this ocean. We couldn't keep the promise we made with him!" Brook survived alone on the ship for fifty years, and the result became his obligation toward that friend. Robin and Franky listen in silence as the story shifts from zombie mechanics to an old promise, one that has outlived an entire crew.

Franky is stunned by the length of Brook's solitude. "50 years?! Hey! It's really such an old story!? I wasn't even born back then." Brook answers that the friend could not have waited that long, but the thought still torments him: what if that friend believed in their promise and is still waiting? Franky imagines the loneliness of someone who thinks he has been betrayed by his nakama. Brook finally gives the name of the one waiting on that coast: "... Laboon." Franky reacts, "You..." as the memory strikes. Brook does not know that the Straw Hats have met that same whale. He only knows the guilt of a promise broken by death and fifty years of silence.

Brook imagines Laboon still crying at the Red Line, calling "BUOOO!!!" as he and his crew sail away with the promise, "We'll definitely come back!" Brook says there was no way they could take a little whale on their dangerous journey, so they left him behind. The group finally understands: "Your nakama was a 'whale'!?" Brook answers, "Indeed." He imagines Laboon still believing they would come back, still expecting them to play their cheerful music again, still waving them back with the same trust. Franky thinks the whale would never forgive them for dying in vain, and Robin gives the chapter its hard truth: "Death doesn't count as an apology!" Brook silently absorbs that sentence, because it is exactly the guilt he has carried.

Brook admits the promise is what keeps him moving: "Because a man promised to him that he'd definitely come back!!!" The Straw Hats fall silent as the meaning settles in. Luffy remembers the whale's name: "Laboon..." and the pieces click together. Usopp asks, "Is this for real?" Sanji murmurs, "He's..." and Zoro remains quiet, the weight of the story changing even his expression. Franky can only answer, "Ah..." The crew is no longer hearing about a random talking skeleton. They are realizing that Brook is the nakama Laboon has waited for all these years, and that the promise made at the Twin Capes has reached their own ship by impossible chance.

The crew remembers Laboon clearly. Luffy says, "We know..." and the memory rises of the whale at the entrance to the Grand Line. Someone explains, "It's not a mountain! It's a whale!" and another remembers, "At the entrance to the 'Grand Line,' the damn whale was there. He kept banging his head on the wall that divides the world." Robin quietly summarizes the promise: "'We'll definitely come back!' For those nakama who made that promise... waiting 50 years is..." The huge image of Laboon fills the page, mouth open in a mournful "BUOOOOO!!!" while Luffy stares in shock. What had once been a strange adventure at Twin Capes now becomes Brook's deepest wound and the reason his afro matters.

The Straw Hats recall how Luffy stopped Laboon from killing himself against the Red Line. They remember that Laboon heard the pirates had run away, refused to accept it, and tried to break through the wall. Luffy somehow persuaded him to stop by breaking through the wall himself, and now Laboon is alive, waiting for his nakama at that cape. Usopp is amazed: "That's an unbelievable story! They kept that promise for over 50 years!" Zoro thinks of the one that whale was waiting for and says, "To think... that one of those nakama whom Laboon was waiting for..." As the thought completes, the scene cuts back to Brook fighting Ryuma: the person at the heart of that promise is still struggling for his shadow and his chance to return.

Brook and Ryuma continue their duel. Ryuma laughs, "Yohoho..." and tells Brook, "You've become stronger in the passing years. Though, the same applies to me! Because we think alike!" Their blades meet in a sharp, mirrored clash, the sword styles overlapping because Ryuma carries Brook's own shadow. Brook is thrown back with a cry of "Uwaah...!!!" but he rises, panting. Ryuma identifies the fatal pattern between them: "Like always, you cherish your afro. With a weak point that big, there's no way you can avoid being hit!" The fight is not just against a superior body; it is against an enemy who knows the exact emotional target Brook cannot protect himself from ignoring.

Ryuma attacks the afro again and Brook screams, "Silence!" The thought of Laboon breaks through his fear. "Laboon... do you still... remember us?" he wonders as the duel continues. Brook says that when he thinks about how Laboon must feel, his chest starts to hurt even though he no longer has a heart. He admits the Grand Line is still indomitable despite all his power, and that after losing his crew he has lost his face and body too. The images of swords and movement blur together with his memories: all of his nakama have likely died by now, yet Brook is still moving because one promise remains alive. Every strike against his afro is a strike against the only proof Laboon might recognize.

Brook is battered across the ground, still trying to guard the afro. He thinks that if he and Laboon happen to meet again, Laboon "wouldn't even recognize me in this form" unless the afro remains. Brook cries, "Wah! Stop! Leave the afro alone!!" but Ryuma keeps laughing, "Yohoho!" Brook has almost nothing left, but he clings to one vestige: "At least... they said this head made you laugh!! I'll protect at least this vestige alone!" He remembers the promised cape and declares, "Because I'll definitely come to see you! I want you to wait for me, at the promised cape...!!!" The page shows the exact reason death is not enough: Brook wants to arrive recognizably, as the friend Laboon waited for.

The Straw Hats' response is immediate and loud. Luffy shouts from the Sunny, "Uwaaah~~~!!! I'm all pumped up!! He's a musician!! He's a talking skeleton!! He has an afro!! And yohoho!! And he's Laboon's nakama!!!" He declares, "Even if I have to drag him, I'll get him to board this ship!!! I'll make him one of our nakama!!! Does anyone have an objection?" Robin smiles, "Fufu... Even if we object, would that change your opinion?" Usopp cries that he wants to meet Brook because he is Laboon's, and Franky agrees, "I concur, damnit!!!" Chopper, still frightened but moved, yells, "Hell yeah! I concur as well!!! I'm not scared of skeletons!!!" The crew's decision is made: Brook is no longer a stranger; he is someone they will bring aboard.

Before chasing that obvious new goal, Sanji reminds everyone, "... We have to stop Nami's wedding, damnit!!!" Zoro starts walking, and Usopp calls after him, "Zoro!! Where are you going?" Zoro answers, "I'll set foot on land." He points out that the number of shadows they have to retrieve has just increased. Luffy grins, "Shishishi!!!" as the plan expands: save Nami, recover all the shadows, and rescue Brook. The crew prepares to strike back against Thriller Bark. Someone orders, "All right, you guys!!! Start preparations for a counter-attack!!!" and Luffy declares, "We'll blow the crap out of Thriller Bark!" The chapter closes Volume 47 with the Straw Hats finally united around a counterattack, even as Perona shouts, "March on!" and Kumashi is scolded, "You too, idiot!!"
