Chapter title page: Chapter 559, "Karma." The cover begins Short-Term Focused Serial 18, "Zoro's 'Where Are Those Guys? They're Such a Pain,'" with Vol. 1 titled "A Giant Gravestone Outside the Ruins." Zoro stands among ruined buildings and strange dark shapes beside a huge cross-shaped gravestone, while a small figure floats or hangs in the air nearby. This cover is separate from the Marineford battle, but it starts Zoro's separated cover story after the Straw Hats were scattered.

Ace watches the war from the execution platform and begins accepting whatever future may come. He thinks, "I feel like I can accept any future at this point. I'll grasp the hand that will reach out to save me... I'll also accept the blade that will swing down to judge me... I won't resist anymore. I owe everyone that much." Around him, voices from the battlefield echo: Luffy yelling, "I'm going to save you even if it kills me!!!" the pirates promising not to leave a single one of the bastards who hurt Ace alive, and Whitebeard's men saying they are coming to get him. Ace is moved to tears, but then he notices something new on the battlefield and reacts with a sharp, startled pause.

Luffy, Ivankov and the escapees push through Marine fire and blades. Cannons blast from the wall while Luffy and Ivankov rush across the battlefield, scattering Marines and dodging attacks amid huge SFX. The page is mostly action, with Luffy's group forcing a path through the Marine ranks after Whitebeard's order to protect him. Ace watches the chaos from above as the rescue attempt turns into a full charge across Marineford.

Buggy's followers are impressed by Luffy's instant battlefield fame and say, "The guy managed to get all eyes on him in an instant. In the middle of this war!! That Strawhat...!!" They urge Captain Buggy not to let Luffy outdo him and suggest taking Whitebeard's head themselves. Buggy says it is easy to claim but the battlefield is full of world-famous faces from both the pirates and Marines. Then Whitebeard notices him and calls, "Oi! Red-nose!!" Buggy explodes, "Who the hell d'you think you're calling red-nose!!?" but Whitebeard remembers him: "That takes me back. So you're still alive, eh? Why, if it isn't the little brat from Roger's ship." Buggy panics that Whitebeard is looking right at him and that he is done for.
Buggy's followers marvel that their captain is talking to Whitebeard and call him legendary, while Buggy trembles and tells them to stop talking like it has nothing to do with him. Whitebeard asks whether Buggy and his convicts mean to take his head, and Buggy forces himself to answer, "D... damn right we do!! It's been a while, huh!? I hope you're ready for this!!" Whitebeard replies that he does not particularly mind if Buggy tries, but he is having trouble with the Marines and asks what Buggy says to joining forces as fellow pirates to crush the Marines first, then thinking about his head afterward. Buggy is stunned that Whitebeard is speaking to him like an equal, while his followers ask just how strong Whitebeard really is.

Buggy accepts Whitebeard's offer and declares, "Very well, Whitebeard!! I'll take you up on that!!!" His men faint and cheer, thinking he is on equal terms with Whitebeard. Buggy imagines that he and Whitebeard together could crush the Marines and that he, the king of the world, can actually do it. Whitebeard observes that Buggy is a simple one, then says he does not know about that red-nose, but the convicts on his side are reasonably strong and he does not want to deal with them as enemies right now. He notices that he has lost sight of Squardo and calls the Decalvan Brothers, telling them to follow his directions and take command of all the pirate crews.

Whitebeard's allied captains begin moving under orders. One captain says he will take the right, another says they will take the left, and others answer that they understand. More allies say they are heading right, proceeding left, and sending their ships wherever needed. A Marine reports to Sengoku, "Admiral Sengoku! We're seeing a change in the New World pirates' movements!" Sengoku looks over the battlefield and says, "Yes... They seem to have split to the left and right..." The pirates' fleet begins shifting in a coordinated pattern, showing that Whitebeard has responded to Sengoku's operation with his own.
Pirate ships move in and attack the Marine battleships, with Marines shouting, "They're attacking the battleships!!!" Sengoku realizes Whitebeard has noticed the strategy and says, "Whitebeard..." Whitebeard answers, "You're a sharp one... so you noticed, eh?" A Marine officer explains that Whitebeard is not one to let them guide his actions and that it was never the most refined of strategies. Sengoku warns that intuition alone will not be enough to protect Luffy. The battlefield widens from Luffy's charge into a fleet-level struggle between Sengoku's trap and Whitebeard's countermeasure.

Jinbe continues clearing the way and Luffy says, "Jinbe!! It looks like as long as you're around..." before Jinbe answers, "Proceed!!" and Luffy thanks him. Marines panic that the Shichibukai are one of their major military forces and that they cannot have them fighting among themselves, especially with Jinbe turning against them. Moria tries to take advantage, calling, "Give me your shadow!!!" and demanding Marine soldier shadows so he can use them as zombie soldiers. He tells Jinbe that he will take his shadow too and let him live the rest of his life in the darkest depths of the ocean. Jinbe responds with Fishman Karate, "Samegawara Seiken!!!" also noted as "Samegawara Seiken: Shark-Tile Punch," smashing Moria with the attack.
Luffy is suddenly intercepted by Smoker. Tashigi sees him and shouts, "Strawhat!!" then tries to move, but Smoker orders, "Tashigi, move!!!" The battlefield erupts with impact as Smoker drives his jitte into Luffy and pins him back. Luffy cries out, and Tashigi is thrown aside by the force of the clash. The page shifts the threat from the mass of Marines to a personal rematch: Smoker has found Luffy again in the middle of Marineford and blocks his path to Ace.

Luffy recognizes Smoker and the sea-stone weapon, shouting, "You...!! Smokey...!!! Of course... that jitte... It's got kairouseki in it...!! Damn you!!" Smoker says, "I will finish you myself!!" Luffy tries to answer with speed and power: "Gomu Gomu... Jet Gatling!!!" His fists blur into a storm of blows, but Smoker's smoke body and weapon make the exchange dangerous. The fight is fast and close, with Luffy trying to break through before Smoker can end the rescue attempt.

Smoker launches "White Launcher!!" and drives Luffy hard into the ground. Luffy realizes Smoker is way stronger than before, while Smoker says, "I believe that goes for both of us. But you cannot defeat me with your ability!!!" He pins Luffy with the kairouseki jitte and explains that he can see exactly why Dragon saved Luffy back in Loguetown. Luffy's strength fades under the sea-stone and he gasps, "My strength is fading... Damn... That jitte... get it off me...!" Smoker has him trapped and helpless in the middle of the battlefield.

Boa Hancock suddenly attacks Smoker, knocking him off Luffy and snapping, "Out of the way, fool!!!" Smoker is shocked that someone managed to attack his body of smoke. Hancock stands over Luffy and rages, "Silence!! I am so filled with rage that I cannot even hear your words!! How dare you attack my beloved and pin him to the ground!!!" Marines cry, "Hancock!! Do you, too, mean to abandon the Shichibukai!?" and "The Pirate Empress, protecting Strawhat!?" Luffy smiles and says, "Hancock!!" while Smoker realizes, "So this is the Kuja's Haki...!!" Hancock declares, "You shall not live... I have never felt such anger in all my life!!! I shall slice you to pieces and feed you to the beasts!!"

Hancock immediately melts when Luffy calls her by name, thinking, "Ahhh... He called me Hancock again...!!" and answering, "Indeed!" On another part of the battlefield, Ivankov faces Kuma and calls out, "Kuma... Kuma...!!" He demands, "Enough of this nonsense!!! It is I!! Do you mean to tell me you have forgotten this face!!? If you do not stop this, then I will be forced to attack you...!" Kuma stands silently before him with the word "Bible" visible on the book he holds, while Ivankov tries to reach the person he once knew.
Doflamingo appears near Ivankov and Kuma, laughing, "Fuffuffu... I don't know what connection the two of you may have had... but you should give it up. There's no point trying to talk to him, Revolutionary Army commander Emporio Ivankov." Ivankov snaps, "What on earth do you mean by that!?" Doflamingo identifies the man Ivankov knew as "Bartholomew Kuma" and says he was once known by the name "Tyrant Kuma." Then, with a sinister grin, he reveals, "Well, he's already dead." Ivankov reacts in shock, leaving the chapter on the implication that the Kuma before him is no longer the same person.
SBS page. A reader asks whether characters with horns are like people with overbites in the One Piece world. Oda says there are definitely characters with horns and strange skeletons, and that these are more than just giving characters a little personality because he wants to draw more interesting faces. Another reader observes that Oda does not usually use "Strawhat pirate crew" or "Luffy's pirate crew," but instead says "the Strawhat crew." Oda confirms this is intentional and says it does not matter what the anime, games, or readers call them, because he decided to call them "the Strawhat crew" and stuck with it. A final reader says he has a mushroom on his body he cannot remove and asks about going to the Isle of Women; Oda bluntly identifies it as his penis, jokes about using a naughty word, bleeps it, and announces that the voice actor SBS starts on page 188.
