The Tragic Ranks

A massive fortress looms under dark skies as crowds flee in terror. Speech bubbles cry out: "HELP US!", "UWAHHH!!", "WE GAVE YOU THE MONEY, SO SPARE OUR LIVES...!!", "YOUR HIGHNESS, PLEASE STOP!", and "THE LAND IS BLANKETED BY EVIL!". In the next tier, a tall man with a cross-like hat shouts, "THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS IN A PANIC!!!" while others yell, "WHAT ON EARTH HAS HAPPENED TO HIS HIGHNESS!I" and "わあああ". Below, a young woman with a headband clasps her hands, saying "FATHER..." and "HE'LL BE TAKING OVER FROM HERE!!". Nearby figures react: "SO I'VE CONTACTED THE MARINES!", "I THINK THE SITUATION IS BEYOND ONE WE CAN DEAL WITH AT THIS POINT...", "I THOUGHT HE WAS ACTING STRANGE WHEN HE BURST OUT OF THE PALACE EARLIER...", "WE'LL LEAVE EVERYTHING TO CAPTAIN VERGO.", and "BUT TO THINK THAT HE WOULD GO AND DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS!!" A circular sign reads "DRESS ROSA".

Inside the palace halls, a woman with dark hair exclaims, "...!UFUFU. PRINCESS VIOLA..." and questions, "WHY DID A MAID LIKE YOU OPEN UP THE PALACE GATES...!I" and "MONET!I WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THERE!I" while another voice asks "SNOW!I". A blonde woman with spiral glasses states, "RIGHT NOW, I'M...", "I EXPECT YOU'D SEE WHAT'S QUITE CLEARLY...", "YOU'D SEE JUST WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS COUNTRY NOW.", and "IF YOU JUST USE YOUR 'CLAIRVOYANCE'...". An explosion erupts from a tower with the cry, "THERE'S A BLAZE COMING FROM THE EAST TOWER!!". The blonde woman continues, "A NEW ROYAL FAMILY.", "INVITING IN...", and "STEP...". In the foreground, Viola gasps with wide eyes as voices shout, "VIOLA-SAMA HAS BEEN CAPTURED!", "PIRATES ARE INSIDE THE PALACE!!", and multiple "STEP..." sound effects mark approaching footsteps.

Doflamingo's crew storms the palace. Riku, in a spotted cloak, is struck and cries, "RIKU ROYAL ARMY!!!", "GYAH!!", "HAA!", "HAA!", "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS!I", and "IF YOU WOULD HAVE ME STRIKE DOWN MY COUNTRY-MEN...!!!". He begs, "PLEASE STOP...!!" and "KILL ME!!" while others shout, "SOMEBODY, PLEASE...", "THEN I WOULD RATHER DIE...!!!", and "UHH!". Doflamingo laughs atop the throne, declaring, "A FITTING PALACE FOR THE YOUNG MASTER!!", "AH, YEAH, LOOKS GOOD.", and "I LIKE THE LOOK OF THIS PLACE, NOT BAD." His crew cheers, "LET'S BABY!". Trebol and others react as Monet is addressed: "MONET!! UNHAND VIOLA-SAMA!", "ARE YOU UNHAND VIOLA-SAMA!", "WHAT HAVE YOU BASTARDS DONE TO KING RIKU!", and "STOP RIGHT THERE, YOU BASTARDS!". A large "ドドド" sound effect rumbles through the chaos.

Tear-streaked citizens clutch their faces in anguish as they confront their king. One cries out, "YOU'RE ALWAYS SO KIND AND JUST!!" Another demands, "DID WE... DID WE DO SOMETHING WRONG...I" A massive wail erupts: "WHY, KING RIKUI" In the background, the ruined colosseum burns while mounted soldiers trample through piles of money bags. The people shout, "WE GAVE ALL WE HAD, BECAUSE IT WAS YOU WHO SAID TO HAND OVER OUR MONEY..." Silhouettes of cavalry ride over the treasure as the crowd laments, "YOU'RE OUR KING, WHO WE TAKE SO MUCH PRIDE IN..." A soldier on horseback swings his sword and yells "HYAHHH!!" The citizens continue, "BECAUSE YOU ALWAYS THINK OF US, FIRST...!! BECAUSE YOU'RE OUR BELOVED KING!!!"

The furious mob screams accusations: "ALL IN HIS OWN SELF-INTEREST...!!! HE'S TREATING US LIKE GARBAGE!" "HE STOLE OUR MONEY, AND NOW HE MEANS TO KILL US!!!" "...KING RIKU IS TRAMPLING ALL OVER OUR HEARTS!!" A woman sobs, "UWAHHHH!!" while others yell, "AN INHUMAN PIECE OF SHIT!!!" and "YOU'RE NOTHING BUT... DAMN YOU, KING RIKU...!!! I HATE YOU...!!!" In the chaos, someone spots approaching forces and shouts, "THE RIKU ROYAL ARMY IS COMING!! HEY, GET AWAY FROM THERE! RUN AWAY!!" A desperate man reaches out, crying, "SA... SAVE ME...!!!" as the army charges forward on horseback.

Donquixote Doflamingo descends dramatically from above, arms spread wide. "MY NAME IS DONQUIXOTE DOFLAMINGO!!!" he declares. "I'VE COME TO SAVE THIS LAND!!!" Trebol stands beside him with his snot-like substance, while the towering Pica looms nearby and Diamante grins with arms crossed. The crowd reacts in shock as massive block letters explode across the page: "ドドドドン!!!" People scream, "W-WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE...!I" and "FUFUFUF-FUFUF-FUFU!!" Doflamingo's crew strikes powerful poses amid the swirling smoke and debris as the citizens stare up in stunned silence.

Doflamingo's executives move in. A close-up shows a grinning figure declaring, "NOW FALL...!!! GIVE IN TO THE MAYHEM." The crowd realizes in horror, "...THEY TOOK DOWN THE ROYAL ARMY FOR US..." and "BUT... P...PIRATES!!" Doflamingo's voice rings out, "DIAMANTE!! PICA, TREBOL... COME AND TAKE OUT THIS COUNTRY'S TRASH." The officers respond with attacks as the people panic. A massive double-page spread shows the burning city with citizens chanting in despair, "DOFLAMINGO!! DOFLAMINGO!!" while enormous sound effects and cries of "わあああああああああああ!!" echo across Dressrosa.

The country fell into Doflamingo's hands. So in just a single night... A soldier in a tall hat stares in shock. Below, a long-haired figure screams in agony, "HUUUGAA... UGAA!! I...!!! I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!!!! DOFLAMINGO!!!" A woman in a hooded hat watches with a serious expression and says, "Such a cunning man..." An armored soldier beside her exclaims, "What a story... A real night-mare!!!" Other soldiers react with horror. One declares, "The king that everyone had loved... I see. That's awful..." Another adds, "Was sent to his death for a crime he hadn't committed...!!!" A bearded soldier states, "We made contact with the new king, Doflamingo, but you can see how that turned out." Others chime in: "Believed that King Riku had gone mad. At the time, we, too..." and "I'm ashamed for having ever doubted King Riku...!!!"

Viola continues explaining the past. "So she made a deal with him. At the time, Doflamingo was intrigued by Princess Viola's ability," while a small "EHI!" reaction appears. An old man in a top hat shouts, "No... King Riku still lives!!" Viola adds, "She is also still alive, serving as one of his subordinates...!!!" In a flashback, a younger Viola pleads desperately, "I will serve under you!!! If you promise not to kill father..." A soldier reacts, "An officer!I So thanks to the princess, King Riku is still..." Viola reveals, "She changed her name to Violet. As one of the family's officers..."

Viola reflects under a bright sky with sunflowers: "...Yes. He's definitely still alive, somewhere in this country. But I cannot fathom the pain the king must have endured these past ten years...!!! Nor the pain in Viola-sama's heart!!!" She thinks, "What a decade for them to bear... Fear... anger... tears..." Flashbacks show soldiers and a horse in chaos. She continues, "Of those soldiers, who, along with King Riku, were manipulated against their will into striking down the people before them... Nor can I imagine the suffering... But weren't King Riku's men killed on that night..."

A soldier yells, "What a bunch of traitors!!!" Another explains, "They've survived as his bodyguards...!!! Others bowed down to Doflamingo, right there and then. Some were, but..." A large soldier shouts, "So allow me to take them on as my men!!! They were only acting on the orders of that crazed King Riku!!!" A top-hatted figure reacts with shock. The large soldier continues, "If added up, they fall short of the total number of military in this country... But even the soldiers who were killed and those who surrendered..." A soldier in a top hat cries out, "Well if that's how it is then I can't help but cry again!! You guys...!!!! I... I believe that they too had to make an impossible decision." Others react with "II" and "What are you saying!I"

An elderly bearded man in a black hat addresses someone off-panel: "FRALAND, REMEMBER WHAT I SHOWED YOU IN TOWN, EARLIERI" A question mark floats above distant figures near a Flowerhill sign. In the next panels a smiling woman in a dress walks hand-in-hand with a small child-like toy while a dog-like toy named Milo explains, "MY NAME IS MILO. NOT WAN-POKO." The group discusses forgotten memories: "BUT EVERYONE ELSE HAS COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN THAT, FOR INSTANCE, WE TOYS USED TO BE THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS." "REMEMBER EVERYTHING FROM OUR TIME AS HUMANS... THOSE OF US TURNED INTO TOYS..." A top-hatted toy soldier adds, "...IN OTHER WORDS, THERE ARE TOYS WALKING THE STREETS WHO HAVE FORGOTTEN WHO YOU USED TO BEI" The woman replies, "YES, EXACTLY." The soldier concludes, "AND WE TOYS ARE THE SAME WAY. THIS IS DRESSROSA'S GREATEST TRAGEDY. THEY DON'T EVEN REALIZE THAT THEY'VE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING SO IMPORTANT..."

A crowd of toys reacts with shock as narration continues: "BUT SHOULD THIS LAND'S DARKNESS BE BROUGHT TO LIGHT, ONE WOULD FIND THE SEETHING WILL OF REBELLION!!" "IN THE DARKNESS, DOFLAMINGO CONSIGNED TO OBLIVION ANY AND ALL SEEDS OF REVOLT." "AT THE INSTANT THEY WERE TURNED INTO TOYS, FURTHERMORE, EVERYONE REMEMBERS STARTING TO HATE DOFLAMINGO..." The top-hatted toy soldier declares, "HOLD THE KEY TO OUR STRATEGY, HERE!!!" and emphasizes, "MORE THAN ANYTHING... THESE 'TRAGIC RANKS'..." Usopp reacts with wide eyes and shouts, "IF YOU'RE GOING UP AGAINST A SHICHIBUKAI AND HIS CREW, THEN THESE GUYS ALONE WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH, BUT... IF ALL THE TOYS IN THIS COUNTRY JOINED THE RANKS OF YOUR REBELLION, THAT MIGHT JUST DO IT!!" "SO THAT'S IT!! THEY'RE THE TRUMP CARD YOU MENTIONED BEFORE!!"

Robin stares in surprise as Usopp yells, "ISN'T THAT RIGHT, ROBIN!!I" and "I WILL NEVER FORGIVE DOFLAMINGO." A frantic man with goggles shouts, "ALL WE'RE HERE TO DO IS DESTROY THE FACTORY!! AND WHEN THAT'S DONE, WE'RE OUTTA HERE!!" "HEY, HEY, HEY HOLD ON NOW!!! WHY DOES IT SOUND LIKE YOU'RE RARING TO TAKE DOWN DOFLAMINGO!I" The toy soldier asks, "WHAT HAPPENED THIS MORNINGI" while another figure notes, "AND USOLAND'S APPEARANCE ON THIS DAY IS SURELY NO COINCIDENCE!!" A cloaked warrior raises a sword amid dramatic effects: "TODAY IS THE LONG-EXPECTED DAY OF OUR DECISIVE BATTLE!!" The heavens seem to urge battle. Two terrified toys scream, "SORRY ABOUT THAT!!!" as the narrative reflects on the timing of the revolt and a reported misprint from Cloud Nine.

In a scrapyard beneath Dressrosa, a horned warrior laughs, "HIYA HAYA, INDEED I DID!!" while addressing a seated figure: "YOU LED ME HEREI SO, EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE RETIRED..." The old man replies about a large hole opening in his consciousness, feeling the same as ten years ago. A close-up shows his determined face: "BECAUSE I HAVE TO INHERIT COMMAND OF THE HAPPOLI NAVY." Elsewhere, a large mechanical figure grabs a small bear-like toy and demands, "WHAT'D YOU DO TO THE ALOOF WARRIOR JEET!I" A panicked blonde woman cries out, "WHERE AM I GOING!I HELP ME, GRANDPA!" and "...!I WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO THE LONE WOLF ABDULLAH!I" The page ends with the chapter number and title.

Outside the Corrida Colosseum, an old man in a tall hat and a spiky-haired companion react with surprise. "OHI" "HMMMI" A massive scream echoes as someone plummets past the towering arena: "わあああああ AHHHHH!!" A huge impact sound "どーん" shakes the scene. Kin'emon's face fills the panel in shock, eyes wide as he shouts "KINEMON!! ZORO!!" In the next sequence the spiky-haired man grins fiercely, declaring "A SHADOW DRAWS NEAR!! I'VE FINALLY FOUND YOU..." while motion lines and "ドドド" rumble below. A small inset shows Luffy walking ahead as voices complain, "WELL, WHERE'S HE NOWI" "THAT CHICKEN-HEAD GUY LED ME OVER HERE!" "LUFFY!! KEEP IT DOWN, YOU IDIOT!!!" and "ON THE WAY HERE, HE STARTED FOAMING AT THE MOUTH..."
