Joy Boy didn't lose the Ancient Kingdom's greatest power. He gave it up.

THE SUN THAT WAS LOST

What if Joy Boy didn't lose the Ancient Kingdom's greatest power? What if he deliberately took it away?

There is a glaring anomaly in the remnants of the Ancient Kingdom.

Vegapunk, the modern world's greatest scientific mind, has spent his life studying the technology left behind by the civilization that existed 900 years ago. He can reproduce many of its principles and has surpassed almost everything modern science had previously achieved. Yet there is one thing he still cannot reproduce.

The energy that powered it.

The Iron Giant, Emet, is the clearest example. Built more than 900 years ago, Emet was powered by an energy source from the distant past that Vegapunk could not recreate.

That creates a strange problem.

The Ancient Kingdom itself disappeared. But much of its legacy didn't.

Its weapons survived.

Its technology survived.

Its writings survived.

Its descendants survived.

Even Emet survived.

So if so much of the Ancient Kingdom survived the Void Century, why did its original source of power disappear?

I think answering that question may give us a new way of understanding what actually happened at the end of the Void Century.

1. WHAT EXACTLY DID THE ANCIENT KINGDOM LOSE?

The obvious answer is that the Ancient Kingdom lost the war.

But that doesn't explain the technological discrepancy between the two eras.

Vegapunk can study ancient technology, yet the energy that powered Emet remains beyond him. The modern world therefore possesses pieces of the Ancient Kingdom without possessing the full system that made those pieces possible.

That distinction may be important.

Imagine finding a modern computer 900 years from now. You might understand its structure, reverse-engineer its components and reproduce much of its technology. But if the power source no longer exists, you still wouldn't be able to recreate the civilization that produced it.

Perhaps that is what happened to the Ancient Kingdom.

The technology survived in fragments.

The power did not.

And that raises the next question.

2. DID VEGAPUNK RECREATE THE LOST POWER?

In a sense, yes.

But perhaps not in the way we have assumed.

Vegapunk develops the Mother Flame, an attempt to create an effectively inexhaustible source of energy. He describes his goal as creating an "undying flame" and ultimately giving humanity something comparable to its own sun.

Yet Vegapunk never establishes that Mother Flame is the same thing as the Ancient Energy that powered Emet.

In fact, there is an important reason to think it isn't.

Vegapunk can create Mother Flame. He still cannot reproduce Emet's original energy.

That makes Mother Flame potentially much more interesting.

Perhaps it isn't the rediscovery of the Ancient Kingdom's power.

Perhaps it is the first modern substitute for it.

And if that is true, what happens when somebody puts that substitute into an Ancient Weapon?

3. WHY DID LULUSIA HAPPEN?

The World Government takes a portion of Vegapunk's Mother Flame and uses it to power an Ancient Weapon.

Lulusia is erased.

Then the world's sea level rises again.

This becomes particularly interesting when placed beside Vegapunk's explanation of the Void Century.

He reveals that the Great War caused the world to rise by roughly 200 metres and that Ancient Weapons were responsible for the catastrophe.

Now we see something disturbingly similar happen again.

Ancient Weapon + new energy source = catastrophic destruction + another rise in sea level.

The scale is obviously different, so we shouldn't pretend Lulusia proves that the exact same mechanism caused the original 200-metre rise.

But the parallel is difficult to ignore.

The modern world has essentially recreated a small piece of the ancient catastrophe.

And that changes the question again.

Instead of asking only:

What happened during the Void Century?

we can ask:

What were the Ancient Weapons actually being used to accomplish?

Because perhaps the 200-metre rise wasn't simply collateral damage from a war.

Perhaps the ancient world possessed the ability to physically change the world itself.

4. WHY WOULD JOY BOY PRESERVE THE WEAPONS?

This is one of the strangest parts of Vegapunk's revelation.

The Ancient Weapons were responsible for catastrophic destruction, yet they survived the war.

Why?

If Joy Boy knew how dangerous they were, why wouldn't he make sure they disappeared forever?

Perhaps because the weapons themselves were not the problem.

Power is only dangerous depending on who possesses it and what they intend to do with it.

Poseidon makes this particularly obvious.

Poseidon is not a machine sitting in a vault.

It is Shirahoshi.

She possesses extraordinary power, but possessing it does not automatically make her destructive.

The same may be true of the other Ancient Weapons.

Perhaps Joy Boy believed the future would need them.

But if so, there is an obvious problem.

If he preserved the weapons, why wouldn't he preserve the energy required to use them?

Unless he deliberately chose not to.

5. WHAT DID JOY BOY PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE?

This is where Emet becomes extremely important.

Joy Boy knew he would not survive to see the future he was preparing for.

So he placed a massive reserve of his Haki inside Emet and instructed the robot to release it when the time was right.

Eight hundred years later, that preparation finally pays off.

Luffy awakens as Nika.

The Drums of Liberation sound.

Emet responds.

And Joy Boy's stored Haki is finally released.

Whatever the exact mechanics of Emet's awakening, one thing is clear:

Joy Boy deliberately left something behind for a future generation.

This isn't the only example.

Toki's ability allows people from the ancient past to be carried into the future.

Oden learns the true history at Laugh Tale and returns to Wano convinced that its borders must eventually be opened for Joy Boy.

Pluton remains beneath the old Wano.

The Poneglyphs preserve information that the World Government spent centuries trying to erase.

The ancient world repeatedly leaves pieces of itself behind with one common condition:

They are meant for the future.

So perhaps Joy Boy made another decision that we haven't considered.

Maybe he decided not only what the future should inherit, but what it should not inherit.

6. WHAT IF JOY BOY REMOVED THE ENERGY SOURCE?

This is where our theory becomes speculative.

We do not know what happened to the original Ancient Energy.

It may have been destroyed during the war.

It may have been taken by the Twenty Kingdoms.

It may have depended on a resource or phenomenon that disappeared.

Or it may have been deliberately removed.

But consider what Joy Boy would have been facing at the end of the Void Century.

His side is losing.

The Ancient Weapons have already contributed to a catastrophe that permanently changes the planet.

The victorious Twenty Kingdoms are about to inherit everything the Ancient Kingdom possessed.

If the Ancient Kingdom's complete energy infrastructure remained intact, the victors would inherit not only the technology, but the ability to use it at its original scale.

So perhaps Joy Boy made a final calculation.

He could not save his civilization.

But he could prevent the victor from inheriting its full power.

The weapons could survive.

The knowledge could survive.

The technology could survive.

But the source that powered the system could disappear.

Maybe Joy Boy destroyed it.

Maybe he sealed it.

Maybe he hid it.

Whatever the method, the result would be the same:

The Ancient Kingdom's system would survive, but it could no longer be immediately restarted.

That would make Joy Boy's defeat look very different.

He may have lost the war.

But he may have contained its consequences.

7. WHY DOES WANO FIT INTO THIS?

Oden gives us perhaps the clearest example of the ancient world preparing for a future event.

He reaches Laugh Tale, learns the truth and returns to Wano.

His conclusion is not simply to tell everyone what he learned.

He realizes that Wano must open its borders before Joy Boy arrives.

We later learn that Pluton lies beneath the old Wano, which is itself submerged beneath the present country.

Wano therefore functions almost like a vault.

The ancient country is buried.

The Ancient Weapon is buried.

And the decision to open it has been postponed until the right moment.

That looks remarkably similar to what Joy Boy did with Emet.

Something from the ancient world was deliberately preserved.

Its activation was left for the future.

Perhaps this is what Oden actually understood at Laugh Tale.

He wasn't simply waiting for Joy Boy.

He was preparing the conditions under which Joy Boy could succeed.

8. THEN WHAT IS THE SUN?

This is where the Mother Flame becomes more interesting than its name initially suggests.

Vegapunk's ambition is to create an effectively inexhaustible source of energy, something he describes in terms of creating his own sun.

At the same time, the ancient myths repeatedly revolve around the Sun God.

The Harley describes different eras involving the Sun God, and the Third World ultimately brings the return of the Sun God and a new morning.

Then the present gives us Luffy.

His heartbeat becomes the Drums of Liberation.

Emet responds.

Joy Boy's stored Haki is released.

None of this proves that Ancient Energy literally comes from the Sun.

It doesn't prove that Luffy's heartbeat powers Emet.

But it does create a strange cluster of connections between:

the Sun,

Nika,

Joy Boy,

ancient technology,

and an artificial source of energy.

Perhaps the Ancient Energy was not literally sunlight.

Perhaps it was something the Ancient Kingdom understood as part of the same phenomenon represented by the Sun God.

If that is true, Vegapunk may have recreated only the energy-producing aspect of something much older.

He created a counterfeit Sun without rediscovering the original.

9. WHAT DOES IMU ACTUALLY WANT?

This may be the most important question.

We tend to assume Imu's objective is simply to maintain control over the world.

But Imu has already had that control for 800 years.

So why does the World Government continue pursuing the technology of the Ancient Kingdom?

Why is Vegapunk's Mother Flame so important?

Why immediately use it to power an Ancient Weapon?

And what exactly does Imu mean by a reset?

Perhaps the World Government isn't merely trying to preserve the world created after the Void Century.

Perhaps Imu wants to restore something that was deliberately lost at the end of it.

If Joy Boy removed the Ancient Energy to prevent the catastrophe from continuing, then Imu's goal could be the exact opposite.

Recover the power.

Recreate the system.

And this time, ensure that only one side controls it.

That would make the World Government's 800-year suppression of the past even more sinister.

Perhaps they aren't simply afraid of people learning that Joy Boy existed.

Perhaps they're afraid that someone will discover how the Ancient Kingdom worked.

Because once the technology is understood, someone can start rebuilding it.

And Vegapunk has already demonstrated that this is possible.

10. COULD THE RESET BE PHYSICAL?

This is where the 200-metre sea-level rise becomes important again.

The Void Century didn't merely change who ruled the world.

It changed the world itself.

Entire landmasses disappeared beneath the sea.

The geography of the planet was fundamentally altered.

If Imu's ultimate objective involves a "reset", perhaps we shouldn't automatically interpret that as political.

Maybe it means something much more literal.

A return to an earlier state of the world.

A deliberate reshaping of the planet.

And if Ancient Weapons were responsible for the original catastrophe, then the Mother Flame may be the first modern tool capable of reproducing that process.

That would make Lulusia more than an isolated atrocity.

It would be a proof of concept.

The World Government has demonstrated that the ancient system can be made operational again.

11. WHY DOES URANUS MATTER?

We still don't know what Uranus is.

And I think that's important.

Poseidon is a living sovereign.

Pluton is buried beneath Wano.

Uranus remains unknown.

The weapon used against Lulusia was powered by Mother Flame, but we cannot currently say that it is Uranus.

So instead of trying to force an identity onto Uranus, we should ask a different question:

What was the purpose of having three Ancient Weapons in the first place?

If they were designed as parts of a larger system, the missing Ancient Energy may have been what allowed that system to operate at full scale.

Perhaps Uranus will eventually reveal what that system was intended to do.

And that could tell us what Joy Boy was trying to stop.

12. WHAT IF JOY BOY'S FINAL ACT WASN'T FAILURE?

This is the part of the theory I find most compelling.

We usually imagine the end of the Void Century as:

Joy Boy loses.

The Twenty Kingdoms win.

The Ancient Kingdom disappears.

But what if that's incomplete?

What if Joy Boy realized that victory was no longer possible and changed the objective?

He could not save his world.

So he saved the future instead.

He preserved the pieces.

He scattered the truth.

He left Emet a message.

He allowed the Ancient Weapons to survive.

He left Wano as a sealed vault.

And perhaps he removed the one thing that could allow the victors to immediately repeat the destruction.

The Sun went out.

Not because the Ancient Kingdom had been completely destroyed.

Because Joy Boy deliberately made sure its greatest power could not be inherited.

THE FOUR POSSIBILITIES

We still have to acknowledge that there are four plausible explanations for the missing Ancient Energy.

1. The World Government destroyed it.

Perhaps the victors eliminated the source along with the Ancient Kingdom.

2. The energy was destroyed during the war itself.

The same catastrophe that flooded the world may have destroyed the source.

3. The energy depended on something that disappeared.

The Ancient Kingdom may have possessed a resource or phenomenon that no longer exists.

4. Joy Boy deliberately removed it.

He preserved the ancient system while preventing anyone from immediately inheriting its full power.

Our theory is proposing the fourth possibility.

Not because the manga has confirmed it.

Because Joy Boy's demonstrated pattern of preparing the future makes it worth investigating.

THE THEORY

The Ancient Kingdom may have possessed an extraordinary energy source that powered its civilization and enabled its Ancient Weapons.

The Void Century ended with that system catastrophically misused, permanently reshaping the world.

Yet Joy Boy did not simply allow everything to disappear.

He preserved pieces of the ancient world for a future generation.

Emet survived.

His Haki survived.

The Poneglyphs survived.

The Ancient Weapons survived.

Pluton remained beneath Wano.

And the people necessary to continue the story were carried forward through inherited Will, prophecy and even time itself.

What may have disappeared was the power source that connected these pieces together.

Perhaps Joy Boy deliberately removed it because he understood that allowing the victorious side to inherit the complete system would simply allow the catastrophe to continue.

Eight hundred years later, Vegapunk creates the Mother Flame.

He doesn't recover the Ancient Energy.

He creates a substitute.

And Imu immediately discovers that even this imperfect substitute is enough to reactivate an Ancient Weapon.

The world is now beginning to reproduce the conditions of the Void Century.

Which leaves us with the question at the heart of this theory:

If Joy Boy really took the Ancient Kingdom's greatest source of power out of the world, where did he put it?

Because maybe the greatest mystery isn't where the Ancient Kingdom went.

Maybe it isn't where the Ancient Weapons are.

Maybe it isn't even what the One Piece is.

Maybe the real mystery is where the Ancient Kingdom's Sun went when the Void Century ended.

And perhaps the answer is waiting at the same place Joy Boy left everything else for the future.
