The cover presents Chapter 964, "Oden's Adventure." The cover story reads, "Gang Bege's 'Oh My Family' vol. 14: 'We're going to infect all of you with the kiss-kiss germ!!'" Bege's group is chased through Dressrosa by the Germs pirates, continuing the cover serial rather than the chapter's main Wano flashback.

Oden's desire for the sea cannot be stopped. In Wano, his retainers cry, "You cannot do that!!" but Oden shouts back, "I want to adventure... out at sea!!" He asks Whitebeard directly, "Just take me with you!!" The Whitebeard Pirates are alarmed, asking, "Weren't you just trying to kill the captain?" Whitebeard refuses because Oden is not the kind of man who would be content as a follower. He knows from experience that a band of people like that only creates trouble. Oden insists that he has tried dozens of times but cannot sail or navigate and begs Whitebeard to take him, but Whitebeard tells him to set sail on his own.

Whitebeard makes it clear that leaving Wano is a crime that carries severe punishment. He says he never intended to take Oden with him anyway, but Oden answers with complete certainty: "I want to go on this adventure, whether it is legal or not!! I want to see the world!!" Marco mocks Oden's tiny sense of geography, telling him, "You think there's only five islands in the whole world!? Hahaha!! Don't be ridiculous!!" and adds that even if Oden guessed ten or twenty thousand, he would still be far off. Two weeks later, Oden still begs to go. Toki watches him and says, "I am a daimyo, remember! A daimyo!! ...Please go ahead." Oden only wants to relieve himself in peace, while somewhere else a report warns that there are countless islands out there.

Whitebeard decides the safest option is to sneak away in the dead of night. If strength were all that mattered, he would let Oden join, but taking him could look like kidnapping royalty and create political problems. The crew also remembers that Wano gave them treasure, food, and repair supplies. As the ship pulls away, the chain suddenly rattles. Whitebeard sees it and realizes Oden has already attached himself to the ship. Oden calls from the water, "Whitebeard!!" and shouts, "No, I knew you were up to something, Lord Oden!! But I am going to stop you!!"

Oden hangs from the ship's chain as it races away from Wano. His retainers scream, "Oden!!" and he answers with desperate joy: "Please let me join you!! Please let me see the world!! Leaving this country is my dream!!" Izo, dragged into the water with him, protests, "You must return with me!! You are the heir to the shogunate!!" Whitebeard tells Marco not to worry about the others and orders, "Pull up the guy that's holding him back. And only that guy...!!" Marco obeys, pulling Izo aboard while Oden remains in the raging water. Whitebeard says Oden will hopefully float back to shore quietly.

In Wano, Oden's absence becomes a crisis. People shout, "Lord Oden is... missing?!" and "Whitebeard's ship is also gone!!" Kuri's retainers search across the country, but they try not to assume the worst. They cannot find Izo either, nor the dog and cat. Meanwhile, far from shore, Oden is battered by the sea while still clinging to the chain. The ship drags him through waves and rocks as he screams, "Uwaaaa aaaah!!!"
On the ship, the crew worries that Oden will die at this rate, but Whitebeard has chosen a test. He tells Izo that Oden still wants to join and go out to sea, and now they will handle it this way. Whitebeard says Oden has three days to convince him if he wants to change his fate. If Oden can keep hold of the chain for the next three days, Whitebeard will let him join. Oden coughs seawater but lights up when he hears it: "Really!?" Whitebeard confirms, "Yeah. I'm serious."

Oden endures the impossible trial. The ship sails through monstrous waves, fish, rocks, and freezing spray while Oden is smashed again and again behind it. The crew watches in disbelief and asks, "Is he still there?" Even swollen and exhausted, Oden remains on the chain. Someone says, "He is...!! The guy's unbelievable...!!" and another admits it is hard to tell if he is even the same person. With only one hour left, they shout encouragement: "Don't give up, Oden!! You've only got one hour left!!" Marco wonders whether Oden is already practically one of them after coming this far.

The Whitebeard Pirates keep cheering Oden through the last stretch: "You can do it, Oden!!" "Keep it up, Oden!!" "Almost there!!" "Hang in there!!" Izo, still angry at Whitebeard for putting his master through this, says, "I will never forgive you... for making my master go through all this, Whitebeard!!" The crew promises they will take Oden back to Wano if he fails. But on a certain island, Oden hears a woman's voice and lets go of the chain. The people chasing her laugh, "Come on, we're not gonna hurt you!!!" She answers, "You're lying!!"

The woman stands her ground against the men pursuing her. She calls them "human traffickers" and warns them to stay back because hurting her would lower her market value. Her name is Amatsuki Toki. She declares, "How naive of me!!!" after realizing she was deceived, but she still refuses to give up. One of the men taunts her, saying there is nothing but ocean behind her and no way out. Toki answers, "No, there is a way... This is it. I have to leap into the future again..." Before she can escape, Oden comes crashing onto the island with a shout: "Uwahahahahah!!!"

The traffickers mistake Oden for a monster, shouting, "It's an umibozu!!" and "I heard a woman... bugh!!" as he knocks them aside. Toki watches him rise and thinks, "A monster..." then asks, "Did you... come to help me?" At sea, the Whitebeard Pirates realize Oden is gone. They curse that he had only ten minutes left and probably would have passed the test if he had held on just a little longer. Izo says, "You were way too harsh, Pops!!" and the ship sails on while the others call, "Lord Oden!!"

The following day, Oden wakes on the island, battered but triumphant. He says, "Phew!! I guess I lost track of Whitebeard's ship!!" Toki is amazed by his recovery and asks, "You are human, right...?" Oden is not discouraged at all. He says, "Oh well!! At least I finally made it out of Wano!" and announces, "My adventure starts on this island!!" Toki thanks him for saving her while she was unconscious, and when Oden asks if she is from Wano, she says the truth is that she has always dreamed of going there. She asks, "Please, can you guide me there!?" Oden reacts with disgust at the idea of returning so soon, while Toki points out that he looks disgusting too.

The Octopoda Pirates arrive to reclaim Toki and sell both her and Oden. Their captain, Karma, asks whether Oden is her bodyguard and says, "Well, whatever, we'll just sell them both!!" Oden notices Karma's six arms and says, "Six arms!! How interesting!! We never had anyone like this back in Wano!" But there are too many enemies. As the pirates close in, Whitebeard's crew suddenly appears. The attackers panic, "It's the Whitebeard Pirateesss!!" Whitebeard tells Oden to get on board. When Oden admits, "But I let go of the chain..." Whitebeard answers that Oden gave up his ambitions to rush to a woman in need and is surprisingly soft.

Whitebeard welcomes Oden at last, saying, "We're going to reward you with... the adventure of a lifetime... Brother!!" Oden is thrilled: "For real, Whitey-chan?!" The crew cheers, "We're happy for you!! Welcome aboard!!" and admits that Whitebeard gave him a hard time. Nekomamushi, Inuarashi, and Izo reveal they had hidden aboard too. Nekomamushi explains that they knew Oden would not stop until he got on the ship, so they stowed away and waited for him. Toki asks whether she will now be thrown overboard because she had said she would never forgive Whitebeard, but he laughs, "Gurarara!! If I feel like it!!"
Whitebeard asks Toki who she is. She answers, "My name is Toki!! I want to go to Wano..." and he tells her she can stay as she wishes. Oden and Toki join the voyage, and the ship is immediately drawn into danger. Someone cries, "It's an enemy ship!!" while Oden rushes forward, shouting, "Wait, Oden!! We haven't even looted them yet!!" The world outside Wano overwhelms him. Seeing a city unlike anything in his homeland, he asks, "What is this place!? I have never seen a building like that before!!" and the narration says that until then, Oden had never really experienced what the world had to offer.

Oden's senses are flooded by the outside world. He marvels at "the plants!! The animals!!" and says he has never encountered such coldness or such warmth. People call after him, "Oden!!" and warn him to stay back as he stares at a huge stranger and exclaims, "He is huge!!" Every day opens his eyes more and more. The people, the power, the ideologies, and everything else are so different that even his wildest fantasies are surpassed. Oden realizes, "I realised that I was just a tiny speck in this world!!"
On a sea like none he has ever known, Toki reveals something impossible. She says her age is twenty-six, but she was born about eight hundred years ago. Meanwhile, the newspapers keep focusing on Whitebeard, whose latest recruits are said to include "a crazy samurai from Wano." The news reaches the Great Pirate Gol D. Roger. Reading about Oden, Roger grins and says, "So, a samurai escaped from that isolated country!! I want to meet him!!"
