The Three Neptune Brothers

A striped-hatted fish-man reacts in shock, exclaiming "A TAMATEBAKOI!". Nearby, another figure points excitedly while declaring "THAT'S RIGHT, CAP'N!" and "APPARENTLY IT'S HIDDEN SOMEWHERE IN THE PALACE!". A third voice adds "AND IT CAN CAUSE ANYBODY TO AGEI!" and "THAT'S WHAT OUR INTEL SAYS!!". In the lower panels, the striped-hatted leader shouts "WITH THAT BOX, I CAN MARRY PRINCESS SHIRAHOSHI RIGHT AWAY!! I KNOW IT!!" and "STEAL ME THAT TAMATEBAKO RIGHT AWAY!!". His crew responds "THIS IS IT, FOLKS!! PROBLEM SOLVED!!!" and "I DON'T DOUBT IT FOR A SECOND." One crew member wonders aloud, "COULD IT, SAY, TURN A TEENSY LITTLE BRAT... INTO A FULLY-GROWN, SEXY LADYI!" A note explains the Tamatebako reference to Urashima Taro legend.

The striped-hatted captain continues, "...THAT SHIRAHOSHI IS A CUTIE. I'D SAY WITH AN EXTRA TEN OR TWENTY YEARS ON HER... SHE'D GROW INTO A PROPER BEAUTY!!" while his crew cheers "MAN, YOU GUYS ARE SMART!!! BAHOHO HOHO!" and discusses the palace's defenses. He declares "THE DREAM THAT MY CLAN HAS SOUGHT AFTER FOR GENERATIONS!! ONCE I'M SHIRAHOSHI'S HUSBAND... IT WILL FINALLY BE MINE!!" and "SHE'S BIG-BONED, ALL RIGHTI! I AIN'T GOT NOTHIN' AGAINST LARGE LADIES!! SHE'LL GET EVEN MORE GIGANTIC, THOUGH." The crew urges "AREN'T YOU GOING TO PROPOSE FIRST, CAPTAIN DECKENI!" and "RIGHT!! LET'S START WRITING THE WEDDING INVITATIONS!!!" One panicked crew member cries "AW, CRAP... I'VE GOT NO FRIENDS..." as the captain grins widely.

A mermaid holds up an official letter and reads "AND THIS IS AN OFFICIAL LETTER FROM A WORLD NOBLE. THIS IS WHAT IT SAYS....OF THE ATTACHED PETITION." She continues, "THE WORD OF THE WORLD NOBLES HOLDS GREAT SWAY......EVEN AT THE REVERIE COUNCIL OF KINGS!!" and states her support: "FOR THE SAKE OF IMPROVING RELATIONS BETWEEN HUMANS AND FISHMEN......I SUPPORT THE PROPOSAL..." In the lower panels, a large crowd gathers in Gyoncord Plaza as narration explains "...WILL GRANT OUR PROPOSAL THE STRENGTH TO BE REALISTICALLY PUT INTO ACTION!!! OUR RELOCATION TO THE SURFACE IS NO MERE DREAM!!!" and "IF WE GATHER ENOUGH SIGNATURES TO SUBMIT AT THE NEXT REVERIE......THEN THIS PIECE OF PAPER..."

Otohime stands with her hand on her chest, speaking earnestly. "I can only wait for all of you to make your decisions. And I beg of you to reach out for a life of harmony..." She continues, "As such, all that we need now......is to gather more signatures." In another panel a man in a hat shouts in shock, "I don't know what to think... The Tenryuubito granted their support to the proposal...I!" Below, Otohime addresses a cheering crowd from a stage: "A life on the surface, where we can achieve true peace...!!" A small boy yells excitedly, "Not this time!! My mum says she'll sign too!!" while Otohime replies with a gentle smile, "Children... I hope you do not mean......to grant me false hope and then take it back once moreI" Citizens eagerly stuff papers into a large collection box as motion lines and "ズズズ" sound effects show the rush of signatures.

Otohime's eyes widen in surprise as papers flood the box amid "ズズズ" and "ガヤガヤ" crowd noise. Citizens shout, "No pushing in!!" "Everybody line up properly!" and "The queue starts here!" A massive crowd surges forward with flags and banners. Otohime covers her mouth in shock, sweat drops flying, as she whispers "Eh...I" A fish-man official cries out, "Your majesty!!...We're not going to get anywhere with a tiny box like this!! How many people do you think there are in this countryI!!"

A dragon-like fish-man yells, "Come, everyone!! This is the place to show your support for our queen's passionate endeavour!!!" Neptune urges Otohime, "Your majesty... I see you are overcome by emotion. Please, take a seat and rest." The crowd roars "わあああああああ" as signatures pour in. Otohime bursts into tears, crying "UWAAAAAHHHHH!!" while Neptune supports her. Narration boxes read: "The people of her kingdom... showed the deep love they held for their queen. Otohime's seven long years of struggle finally bore fruit. On this day..."

The plaza remains packed for days as citizens line up to submit signatures. Narration states, "...For days, the plaza was filled with people from across the land, eager to submit their signatures for Otohime's cause." In a flashback, young Shirahoshi asks, "Yes... That day, when the Sea Kings peered into the island..." Otohime answers, "Ah, yes...!! That certainly was a big surprise!" She continues, "...That I found the courage and assurance in myself that this country can truly change...!! It was in that moment..." Young Shirahoshi and others react with shock: "EHI!" and "'That moment'I"

Otohime speaks gently while gesturing, explaining the unique power of mermaids. "That is beyond even your father, Neptune......The only person on this island able to communicate with whales. We merfolk have the ability to understand the hearts of the ocean's fish, and to communicate with them, yesI But no mermaid has ever been able to communicate with those gigantic sea kings." In a vision of the past, young Otohime faces massive sea kings underwater. "...With the ability to understand and communicate with even the mighty sea kings. However, according to the records of the royal family... Once in every few centuries, a mermaid is born..." The three young Neptune princes react in shock. "Oh, myyy!! And you're saying that's Shirahoshi, motherI!...A mermaid who is able......to speak with the sea kingsI! I... I'd love to be able to ride on a sea king's back one day!"

Otohime continues her tale with a silhouette of a mysterious figure appearing behind her. "And it is said that when that time comes, a great change will come upon the world....! It is further told that one will appear with the mermaid - to guide Shirahoshi. To show her the right path, and the correct way to use her ability." The princes ponder the implications amid swimming fish. "...Can save thousands of lives if the will is strong enough....! I feel certain of it. The power of love... Then maybe it'll help what you're trying to do, mother....! If this is true, then I feel certain that our island, too, will see great change... The worldI!" Otohime gently holds young Shirahoshi's hand. "And yet, even Shirahoshi herself is still unaware of her ability......and she is unable to control it. If used wrongly, the power that Shirahoshi holds is great enough...to sink the entire world beneath the waves....!!"

The princes react with alarm at the danger. "If she did that, Fish-Man Island would be squashed flat! What should we do, motherI! If anything were to happen to send Shirahoshi into an even greater state of shock than she experienced that day......It is possible that, in her current state, she would instinctively cause the sea kings to go on a mighty rampage. Ehh!!" Otohime smiles softly at her sons. "For the moment, I will do everything in my power to ensure that this does not happen....!...To protect your sister with your lives!!! But I ask that you, my sons, grow up to become fine warriors... And that you use that strength..." The brothers respond with determination. "Thank you!! But of course!!! Yes, mother!!!"

Narration boxes read: "Suddenly, and without warning. And then, it happened." A massive explosion erupts with roaring flames and smoke. "HAAA AAAAA AAAA!!!" Panic breaks out at the signature ceremony. "The box of signatures suddenly caught on fire!!! Someone put it out!!! Protect the signature eees!!! Everyone get back!!! It's on fire!!!" Citizens scramble as smoke and debris fill the air. "Bring water!!! Water!!! Don't let them burn!!!" A large impact SFX "パァァァン" echoes amid the chaos.

Explosions rock the plaza as panicked fish-men and guards scramble amid smoke and debris. A voice cries out, "AHH, HOW TERRIBLE!! ALL THOSE SIGNATURES WE GATHERED...!!" Another shouts, "WHAT WAS THAT NOISEI FORGET ABOUT NOISES, WE NEED TO PUT THIS FIRE OUT!!!" In the midst of the chaos, Princess Shirahoshi appears, sweat beading on her face as she trembles. "YOUR MAJESTY...I" she asks softly. The scene erupts further with massive blasts and screams of "AAAAAGHHHHHH!!!" as Shirahoshi and surrounding figures react in horror, panting heavily amid the destruction.

A massive announcement blares: "QUEEN OTOHIME HAS BEEN SHOT!!!" Chaos fills the circular plaza as guards and citizens point weapons in every direction. "AAAAAHHHHH HHHH!!!" someone screams. "MOTHER..." a small voice says. Guards yell, "THERE'S A SNIPER LURKING IN THE VICINITY!!! PROTECT THE ROYAL FAMILY!!! WHERE DID IT COME FROMI! WHO IS RESPONSIBLEI!" Young Shirahoshi stares in wide-eyed shock, tears forming, while a fish-man cries "MOTHEE EEEER...!" and another calls "MOTHER..."

Urgent orders ring out: "BRING A MEDICAL TEAM, AND QUICKLY!!!" "YOUR MAJESTY!!! HANG IN THERE!!!" "EVERYONE GET AWAY FROM THE PLAZA!!!" Shirahoshi is carried away amid the frenzy, panting and calling "MOTHEE EEEER!!!" A guard urges, "YOUR HIGHNESSES, YOU MUST HURRY TO THE OARFISH!!!" Young Shirahoshi stands frozen as someone grabs her, shouting "WHO ARE YOUI!! STAY AWAY FROM THE PRINCESS!!" and "TERRIBLE, DON'T'CHA THINK, PRINCESSI" A bystander remarks, "WELL, ISN'T THIS QUITE THE RUCKUS...I QUEEN OTOHIME!!"

Amid the turmoil, a voice demands "UGHHH...!!! WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THISI!!!" Shirahoshi cries "MOTHER, ARE YOU OKAYI!!" as she is rushed off with "WE'LL GET YOU TO A HOSPITAL IN NO TIME!!" Panting heavily, she whispers "MOTHER...!!" while vowing "I WILL MAKE THEM REGRET THIS!!!" In a quieter moment she reflects: "I WAS JUST SO HAPPY... TO FINALLY HAVE ALL THOSE SIGNATURES... I DID NOT......I LET MY GUARD DOWN..." and "AND PLEASE... WIPE THOSE TERRIBLE LOOKS FROM YOUR FACES... STAY BY MY SIDE... MY ANGELS..." Prince Fukaboshi replies, "...PRINCE FUKABOSHI... IT IS I, NOT YOU, WHO SHOULD BE BITTER. YOUR MAJESTY....!! YOU NEED TREATMENT!!"

Shirahoshi weeps uncontrollably as memories flood back. Her mother Otohime's voice echoes: "I would never wish for you to be consumed by anger and hatred on my account... Please do not feel any anger on my behalf..." The three Neptune brothers plead desperately, one shouting "...PANT... SO NO MATTER WHO... IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS... YOUR MAJESTY, PLEASE ALLOW US TO...!!!" while lifting their hands. Shirahoshi sobs, "M... MOTHER..." A vision of Otohime warns, "SHIRAHOSHI... YOU MUST BE STRONG..." and continues, "IF ANYTHING WERE TO HAPPEN TO SEND SHIRAHOSHI... INTO AN EVEN GREATER STATE OF SHOCK THAN SHE EXPERIENCED THAT DAY..." The brothers panic as Shirahoshi suddenly flees, screaming "UWAAAAA AAAHHH HHH!!!" while one yells "WAIT!!! SHIRAHOSHI!!!" and another reacts with shock.

The three Neptune brothers erupt into frantic song and dance around Shirahoshi to cheer her up, belting out "AKKAMAMBO!! AKKAMAMBO!! IT'LL BE OKAY! EVERYTHING'S ALL RIGHT WHEN YOU MAMBO-DANCE! OOH YEAH! AKKAMAMBO!! AKKAMAMBO!! LOOK, SHIRAHOSHI!" with musical notes swirling. One brother clears his throat with "AHEM" while another cries "...YOUR HIGHNESSES!! WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU...I!" The brothers continue, "THE THREE OF US ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU-GO-LA-TI-DO!" and "WE WILL ALWAYS BE HERE" while dancing wildly. Shirahoshi watches in distress as background figures shout "SOMEBODY STOP THE PRINCES!!!" and "HOW DARE THEY START SINGING AND DANCING AT A TIME LIKE THIS!!!" One brother yells "WATCH, MOTHER! EVERYTHING WILL BE ALL RIGHT!" Shirahoshi finally speaks softly, "TO PROTECT OUR SISTER-LA-TI-DO!"

The eldest Neptune brother sobs with "SOB... SOB SOB" and declares "SO PLEASE, DO NOT WORRY!!! WE THREE BROTHERS WILL BECOME GREAT WARRIORS, JUST LIKE OUR FATHER...!!! AND AS WE PROMISED YOU, WE WILL PROTECT SHIRAHOSHI WITH OUR LIVES!!!" Another vows "I SWEAR THAT I WILL COLLECT THE SIGNATURES ONCE MORE!!!" A close-up shows Shirahoshi's tear-streaked face as she whispers, "WE ARE SO CLOSE... I KNOW YOU CAN REACH... THE LIGHT OF THE SUN...!!!" The scene shifts to a flashback of Otohime and Fisher Tiger gently linking fingers. The page ends with the caption "Otohime and Tiger (End)".
