THEY CALL HIM 'STRAW HAT LUFFY'

A large pirate ship with a bird-like figurehead and heart motifs on its sails is anchored near the shore of an uncharted island. On the deck, a jeweled hand points to a spot on the wooden railing. A voice demands, "WHY IS THERE DUST ON MY BULWARK?" A pirate flag featuring a skull with a heart shape on its side flutters in the wind. A massive, shadowy figure looms over a terrified pirate crew member. The pirate grovels, sweating profusely, "A THOUSAND PARDONS, LADY ALVIDA!! I-I THOUGHT I'D CLEANED EVERY INCH OF THIS SHIP...!!" He pleads, "I'LL CLEAN EVERYTHING ALL OVER AGAIN! PLEASE--!" The imposing shadow cuts him off and asks, "'PLEASE' WHAT...?"

A massive, spiked iron mace slams down onto the deck with a heavy "FWUMP". A small, bespectacled boy named Koby flinches in terror, crying out, "I-I DON'T WANNA DIE!!! PLEASE, NOT THE IRON MACE!!" The shadowy figure of Alvida, holding the mace, asks, "KOBY! WHO IS THE FAIREST THROUGHOUT ALL THE SEAS?" Koby nervously replies, "AHEM... HEH HEH... WHY YOU ARE... LADY ALVIDA!! NO ONE COMPARES TO YOU!!" Alvida swings her mace through the air with a "WHOOOO" and declares, "CORRECT!! WHICH IS WHY I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANYTHING DIRTY!!" She continues, "THE SHIP I SAIL IN MUST BE AS CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL AS I AM. UNDERSTAND?" Alvida then kicks Koby hard, sending him tumbling backward. "OTHER THAN THAT, YOU'RE WORTHLESS! HERE, SHINE MY SHOES!!" Koby scrambles to comply, "Y-YES, LADY ALVIDA! RIGHT AWAY!" Alvida warns him, "REMEMBER, KOBY, WERE IT NOT FOR YOUR VAST KNOWLEDGE OF THE SEAS, I WOULD FEED YOU TO THE SHARKS! BUT DON'T PUSH YOUR LUCK!" Koby, trembling as he shines her shoes, stammers, "Y-YES... THAT'S VERY KIND OF YOU."

On the deck of the ship, several pirates are frantically scrubbing the floor with mops and buckets. Alvida's voice booms, "I DON'T WANT TO SEE EVEN ONE SPECK OF DUST ON THIS SHIP!!!" The crew responds in unison, "AYE AYE!" Alvida is fully revealed: a large, imposing woman wearing a wide-brimmed pirate hat with a plume, a plaid shirt, and a captain's coat draped over her shoulders. She wields a massive spiked iron mace. A caption box introduces her: "THE LADY PIRATE IRON MACE ALVIDA". She slams her mace down with a loud "DA-DUM", yelling, "THAT'S ENOUGH!! YOU'RE PATHETIC!!" The impact sends debris flying, and a shoe hits Koby in the face with an "OOF!". Alvida glares down at him, "IF YOU'VE GOT TIME TO GROVEL, THEN YOU'VE GOT TIME TO SCRUB THE TOILET!!" Koby, sweating and rubbing his cheek, nervously laughs, "HEH HEH HEH... SORRY... HEH HEH... YES, MILADY! RIGHT AWAY..."

On the shore of the island, near a small building, Koby is rolling a large wooden barrel. Three pirates from Alvida's crew are standing nearby. One of them notices and asks, "WHAT'S THAT, KOBY? DID A BARREL OF RUM WASH UP ON THE BEACH?" Koby stops rolling the barrel and replies, "Y-YEAH. AND IT'S NOT EMPTY! I WASN'T SURE WHAT TO DO WITH IT..." Another pirate grins and suggests, "WELL I KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT! LET'S DRINK IT ALL UP!" The third pirate looks worried, "BUT IF THE CAPTAIN FINDS OUT, SHE'LL HAVE OUR HEADS!" The second pirate dismisses the concern, "SHE'LL NEVER FIND OUT! WE'RE THE ONLY ONES HERE. JUST KOBY AND THE THREE OF US KNOW ABOUT THIS." The worried pirate agrees, "I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT." The second pirate leans in menacingly towards Koby, "AND YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN', RIGHT, KOBY?" Koby, sweating and waving his hands defensively, stammers, "RIGHT! I-I AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN'! HEH HEH HEH." Internally, Koby thinks, "PLEASE DON'T HIT ME..."

One of the pirates raises his fist, preparing to smash the barrel open. Suddenly, the top of the barrel explodes outward with a loud "KRA-SHAK!!". Monkey D. Luffy bursts out of the barrel, his arms stretched high in the air, shouting, "THAT WAS A GREAT NAP!!!" The force of his exit knocks the pirate who was about to hit the barrel completely unconscious. The other two pirates recoil in absolute shock, screaming, "WHAT THE DEVIL!?" Luffy stands casually inside the shattered remains of the barrel, laughing heartily. "I GOT SO DIZZY I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA BARF!! HAHAHAHA!" He looks around and adds, "HMM... LOOKS LIKE I SURVIVED SOMEHOW."

Koby and the conscious pirates stare at Luffy's back in utter confusion, muttering "HUH!?" and "...!?". The two pirates angrily yell at Luffy, their faces exaggerated in rage, "WHO ARE YOU GUYS? WHO THE HECK ARE YOU!!?" Luffy turns to look at them, pointing at the unconscious pirate on the ground, and asks, "WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN THERE!?" Before anyone can answer, a massive spiked iron mace comes flying through the air with a "WOOSH". A voice roars from off-screen, "BACK TO WORK, YOU SCURVY DOGS!!!" The mace smashes violently into the wooden building behind them with a deafening "KA-BLASH!!!", sending wood splinters and debris flying everywhere. The pirates scream "ARRGH!" as the structure collapses around them.

The building is completely destroyed, reduced to a pile of rubble. The pirates are buried underneath the wreckage, groaning. Alvida's massive silhouette looms over them menacingly. "YOU LAZY SWABBIES! WHO'S THE FAIREST THROUGHOUT ALL THE SEAS?" The terrified pirates quickly answer, "LADY ALVIDA! YOU ARE... OF COURSE!" Alvida glares down, "AND YOU DARE TO DEFY ME?" One of the pirates stammers, "W-WHAT!? NEVER! NOT IN A MILLION--" Alvida cuts him off, "DON'T PLAY DUMB WITH ME! I COULD HEAR YOU TALKING ALL THE WAY FROM THE SHIP!" She demands, "WHICH ONE OF YOU HAD SUCH A 'GREAT NAP'!" At that moment Luffy, still standing in the broken barrel, loudly repeats, "THAT WAS A GREAT NAP!!!" The nearby pirate gasps in fear.

Alvida looks at Luffy, and one of the pirates points at him, saying, "UH... CAPTAIN! WE HAVE AN INTRUDER!!" Alvida notices Koby nearby and says, "YEAH! THAT GOOD FOR NOTHIN' KOBY BROUGHT THAT STRANGE FELLER HERE!" She ponders, "WHAT!? COULD HE BE A BOUNTY HUNTER......AFTER THE PRICE ON MY HEAD?" She then yells at Koby, "KOBY! YOU TRAITOROUS LITTLE RUNT!" One of the pirates doubts the bounty hunter theory, "BUT THE ONLY BOUNTY HUNTER BOLD ENOUGH TO COME HERE... THAT'S RIDICULOUS!! THE NAVY HAS HIM LOCKED UP..." Alvida considers this, "BUT IF HE'S AS CLEVER AS THEY SAY... HE MIGHT'VE ESCAPED! AND THEY SAY THAT THE INFAMOUS RORONOA ZOLO IS THAT CLEVER!!" Meanwhile, Luffy and Koby have quietly walked away from the scene and are now in a wooded area. Koby asks with concern, "UM... ARE YOU OKAY? ARE YOU HURT? AFTER GETTING KNOCKED AROUND SO MUCH YOU MUST BE--" Luffy laughs cheerfully, "HAHA HAHA! I'M FINE, JUST A LITTLE SURPRISED IS ALL." He introduces himself, "MY NAME'S LUFFY! WHERE AM I?"

Koby explains their location to Luffy. "THIS ISLAND IS THE HIDEOUT OF IRON MACE ALVIDA, THE LADY PIRATE. I'M KOBY, HER CABIN BOY." A small caption box reads "KOBY THE CABIN BOY". Luffy sits on the edge of his broken barrel and replies indifferently, "I SEE... WELL, NONE OF THAT REALLY MATTERS TO ME." Luffy then asks, "YOU WOULDN'T HAPPEN TO HAVE A DINGHY, WOULD YOU? MINE GOT SUCKED INTO A GIANT WHIRLPOOL." Koby is shocked, "YOU GOT SUCKED INTO A GIANT WHIRLPOOL!?" Luffy smiles, "YEAH, IT CAUGHT ME BY SURPRISE!" Koby sighs in relief, "YOU'RE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE!...BUT IF IT'S A DINGHY YOU WANT, I HAVE ONE... SORTA..." Koby leads Luffy to a small, crudely built wooden boat hidden in the woods. Luffy looks at it in confusion, "WHAT'S THIS!?" Koby nervously replies, "A COFFIN? I BUILT IT MYSELF. IT TOOK ME TWO YEARS..." Luffy is surprised, "TWO YEARS!? AND YOU DON'T WANT IT?"

Koby explains that he no longer needs the crude boat because he built it to escape, but he is too terrified to try. When Luffy asks why he does not just escape, Koby panics, imagining what Alvida would do if she caught him, and repeats that he cannot risk it. He says, "...I REALLY DON'T NEED IT ANYMORE. I BUILT IT TO ESCAPE FROM THIS PLACE......BUT I DON'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO TRY IT. I GUESS IT'S MY FATE TO BE A CABIN BOY FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE." He clenches his fist, "BUT I ONCE HAD A DIFFERENT DREAM. I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT FATEFUL DAY... I JUST WANTED TO GO FISHING..." A flashback panel shows a younger Koby walking toward a boat, unaware that a pirate crew is standing right behind it. Koby continues, "...AND I BOARDED A PIRATE SHIP BY MISTAKE. THAT WAS TWO YEARS AGO. IN EXCHANGE FOR MY LIFE, I'VE BEEN WORKING AS THEIR CABIN BOY." Luffy bluntly states, "YOU'RE KINDA CLUMSY AND DUMB!" Koby sighs, "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE THAT FRANK..." Luffy laughs, "HAHAHA! AND YOU'RE GUTLESS TOO. YOU REALLY ARE WORTHLESS!" Koby agrees dejectedly, "BUT YOU'RE RIGHT. I DON'T HAVE THE GUTS TO FLOAT AROUND AT SEA IN A BARREL LIKE YOU..." Koby then asks, "LUFFY, WHY DID YOU GO TO SEA ANYWAY?"

Luffy smiles broadly, a confident smirk on his face. "WELL YA SEE... I'M GONNA BE THE KING OF THE PIRATES!!!" Koby's eyes widen in absolute shock, his jaw dropping. "K-KING OF THE PIRATES!!!?" Koby panics, waving his arms frantically. "BUT... YOU'D HAVE TO MAKE THE WHOLE WORLD KNEEL TO YOU!!! WEALTH, FAME, POWER-- YOU'D HAVE TO ACHIEVE IT ALL!!!" Luffy sits calmly on the ground, listening. Koby continues to yell, "DON'T TELL ME YOU'RE AFTER GOLD ROGER'S LOST TREASURE, 'ONE PIECE'!!!!!"

Koby continues his frantic warning, "EVERY PIRATE IN THE WORLD IS AFTER THAT!! DO YOU WANT TO DIE!?" Luffy simply replies, "AND SO AM I." Koby grabs his head in disbelief, "BUT THE ODDS AGAINST YOU ARE ASTRONOMICAL!!? IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!! YOU WANT TO BE THE KING OF THE PIRATES IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIRACY!? IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN!!" Luffy casually reaches out and hits Koby on the head with a "KLONK". Koby falls back, holding his head, "HEY! W-WHY'D YOU HIT ME!?" Luffy explains, "YOU WERE HYSTERICAL." Koby sits up, rubbing his head, "OKAY, I'M USED TO IT." Luffy stands up, adjusting his straw hat. "I'M NOT AFRAID TO DIE, KOBY! I'VE SET MYSELF TO BECOME THE KING OF THE PIRATES... AND IF I DIE TRYING... THEN AT LEAST I TRIED!" Koby stares at Luffy in awe, sweating. "WHAT GUTS... WHAT DETERMINATION!! Y-YOU'RE NOT EVEN AFRAID TO DIE!?"

Tears stream down Koby's face as Luffy's words sink in. "I NEVER LOOKED AT IT LIKE THAT BEFORE!!" Koby thinks to himself, "MAYBE... I CAN BE LIKE THAT! IF I'M WILLING TO RISK MY LIFE TRYING..." Luffy looks at him, "HUH?" Luffy continues his thought, "AND I BELIEVE I'LL SUCCEED, TOO. OR AM I JUST DELUDING MYSELF..." Koby, sitting on the ground, looks up with newfound resolve. "...MAYBE IT'S POSSIBLE!" Koby stands up and asks loudly, "DO YOU THINK I CAN JOIN THE NAVY!?" Luffy is surprised, "THE NAVY!?" Koby shouts with passion, tears still in his eyes, "WE'LL END UP BEING ENEMIES... BUT I WANT TO JOIN THE NAVY AND FIGHT THE BAD GUYS!! IT'S BEEN MY DREAM SINCE I WAS A LITTLE KID!!"

Koby clenches his fists, filled with determination. "LUFFY! DO YOU THINK I CAN DO IT?" Luffy shrugs, "HOW WOULD I KNOW?" Koby declares, "WELL, I'M GONNA DO IT!!! WHAT'VE I GOT TO LOSE!? I DON'T WANNA BE A MISERABLE CABIN BOY MY WHOLE LIFE!! BETTER TO RISK MY LIFE TRYING TO ACHIEVE MY DREAM! I'LL JOIN THE NAVY... AND THEN... I'LL CAPTURE ALVIDA!!" Suddenly, a massive iron mace smashes through Koby's wooden boat with a violent "KRESH", destroying it completely. Alvida stands there, glaring menacingly. "WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CAPTURE, RUNT!?" Koby screams in terror, "AAAH!!!" Alvida sneers, "YOU LITTLE SNEAK! DID YOU REALLY THINK YOU COULD ESCAPE FROM ME!?" Koby looks at the ruins of his boat, "MY BOAT!"

Alvida and her pirate crew surround Luffy and Koby in the woods. Alvida points her mace at Luffy, "IS THAT THE BOUNTY HUNTER YOU HIRED? WELL, HE CERTAINLY ISN'T RORONOA ZOLO..." She then turns her attention to Koby, "SO I'LL GIVE YOU ONE CHANCE TO REPENT... WHO IS THE FAIREST THROUGHOUT ALL THE SEAS?" Luffy looks confused, "ZOLO?" He then points directly at Alvida and asks loudly, "HEY, WHO'S THAT TOUGH-LOOKING OLD BIDDY?" The entire pirate crew recoils in absolute shock, their jaws dropping as they scream "BWAAA". Koby is paralyzed with fear, stammering, "HEH HEH HEH... LADY ALVIDA, YOU--" The pirates panic, yelling at Luffy, "HOW DARE..." "NO WAY!" "LUFFY!! TAKE IT BACK!!" One pirate tries to salvage the situation, "THROUGHOUT ALL OF THE SEAS, LADY ALVIDA IS..."

Koby, mustering all his courage, screams at the top of his lungs, "...THE UGLIEST OLD HAG OF ALL!!!" Luffy bursts into uncontrollable laughter, "HAHAHAHAHA!" Alvida's face contorts in pure, unadulterated rage. "YOU LITTLE--!!!" Koby stands his ground, tears streaming down his face, "I SAID IT AND I WON'T TAKE IT BACK! NO MORE CRINGING FOR ME!! FROM NOW ON, I'LL FIGHT FOR MY DREAMS!!" Luffy smiles proudly, "I'M GONNA BE THE KING OF THE PIRATES... AND IF I DIE TRYING... THEN AT LEAST I TRIED!" Koby repeats to himself, "LADY ALVIDA IS... LADY ALVIDA IS..."

Enraged, Alvida swings her massive iron mace down with a powerful "WHAM!". "YOU'RE BOTH GOING TO DIE!!" she roars. Koby screams, "L-LUFFY...!!" while Luffy smiles and says, "GOOD FOR YOU, KOBY!!" The spiked mace comes down on Luffy, but he remains standing beneath his straw hat. Alvida sneers, "IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO ME..." However, Luffy simply smiles and says, "THAT DIDN'T HURT!" Alvida and her crew stare in absolute disbelief, their eyes bulging. "IMPOSSIBLE! NO ONE SURVIVES THE IRON MACE!!" Luffy smirks and explains, "'CAUSE I'M MADE OF RUBBER!"

Luffy grabs Alvida's mace with one hand and stretches his other arm far back behind him, the limb extending like a rubber band. "GUM-GUM..." he calls out. The pirates watch in horror, "YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING!" Alvida is stunned, "WHAT THE--?" Luffy's stretched arm snaps forward with incredible speed. "...PISTOL!" His fist connects squarely with Alvida's face in a devastating punch, the impact echoing with a massive "POW!!". The force of the blow sends Alvida flying backward.

Alvida crashes hard into the ground, completely defeated. Her crew panics, running towards her. "CAPTAIN!!!" "HE BEAT LADY ALVIDA! HE'S NOT HUMAN!" "H-HIS ARM STRETCHED LIKE RUBBER..." Luffy turns to the terrified pirates, pointing a finger at them. "GIVE KOBY A DINGHY! HE'S GONNA JOIN THE NAVY!" The pirates immediately salute and comply, "Y-YESSIR..." Koby, overwhelmed with emotion, cries tears of joy. "LUFFY..." Luffy just laughs his signature laugh, "HAHAHA!"

Luffy and Koby are now sailing away from the island in a small boat. Koby looks at Luffy in awe, "YOU MUST HAVE EATEN THE FRUIT OF THE GUM-GUM TREE... INCREDIBLE!" Luffy simply replies, "YEP!" Koby then grows serious, "BUT LUFFY, IF YOU'RE GOING AFTER ONE PIECE... THAT MEANS YOU'LL HAVE TO ENTER THE 'GRAND LINE.' THEY CALL IT THE PIRATES' GRAVEYARD..." Luffy smiles confidently, "THAT'S WHY I'M ASSEMBLING A SUPER CREW. THAT GUY IMPRISONED AT THE NAVY BASE... WHAT'S HIS NAME?" Koby answers, "RORONOA ZOLO!" Luffy declares, "IF HE'S A GOOD GUY, I'LL LET HIM JOIN MY CREW!" Koby panics, waving his arms, "NOW YOU'RE TALKING CRAZY AGAIN! NEVER NEVER NEVER! THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN! THAT GUY'S A DEMONIC BEAST!" Luffy asks, "HOW DO YOU KNOW!?" Koby insists, "NEVER!" A narration box concludes the scene: "AND SO THE TWO YOUNG ADVENTURERS SAIL ON TOWARDS THE NAVAL BASE AND... DESTINY!"
