At Marineford, the executioners are still trying to kill Ace. Luffy sees them raise their blades and someone shouts, "They're still trying to execute Ace!!!" Ivankov warns Luffy that the tension hormones only trick his body and have not actually healed any of the damage, saying, "Strawhat boy!! If you fall again, you won't be back!!" Luffy answers with determination and charges anyway, screaming for everyone to move as he hurls himself toward the platform.

Coby notices Luffy coming and thinks, "I have to fight, or else nothing will change!! This is a battle!! I have to be ready to kill him!!" Luffy calls, "Gomu Gomu..." and Coby uses "Soru!!!" to intercept him. Luffy instantly slams through Coby with "Bull-" and "-let!!!" sending him crashing away. The exchange shows how far apart they still are on the battlefield, even though Coby has forced himself to step forward.

Hancock intervenes when Pacifistas lock onto Luffy. Luffy thanks her, "Thanks Hancock!!" while Marines ask, "Isn't that the Empress!? How does she know you!?" Hancock blushes at hearing him say her name again, but snaps at the Pacifistas, "Don't call me by my name!! Move, Boa Hancock." The Pacifistas mark "Monkey D. Luffy" as the target and identify Hancock as "Boa Hancock... Shichibukai," but she blocks their attack. Luffy realizes, "I see!! You're on his side!!" and keeps running toward the platform, shouting, "Old man!!!"

Kizaru turns his attention back to Marco, who had been distracted by Whitebeard's condition. Kizaru says, "Ooh... I got careless," then adds, "But... you really do revive... Marco the Phoenix..." Vice Admiral Onigumo restrains Marco with seastone, and Marco realizes, "Kairouseki!!" Kizaru fires into him while pirates shout, "Squad leader Marco!!!" Marco is badly struck, and the Whitebeard Pirates lose one of their strongest defenders at the worst possible moment.

Aokiji freezes Jozu, and Marines shout, "Squad leader Joz is down too!!!" With Marco and Jozu both taken out, the Marines order, "Take out the rest of the squad leaders!!!" Aokiji faces the frozen Jozu and says, "Whitebeard Pirates, you're finished..." Around them the battlefield shakes with cannon fire and smoke. The commanders' brief distraction over Whitebeard's wound has become a chain reaction that leaves the pirate command structure exposed.

The Marines swarm Whitebeard while he is wounded. A Marine officer screams, "Don't slow down!!! Men, all of you go get Whitebeard!!!" Pirates rush to defend him, shouting "Boss!!" and "Stay back!!!" but Whitebeard refuses help. Ace watches silently as Whitebeard pants, "Haa... Haa..." and asks, "You all... think that this... is enough to kill me!? I don't need any help..." The Marines stab and shoot at him, but he remains standing in the middle of the plaza.

Whitebeard proves why the chapter calls him a monster. Even after being stabbed, shot, and burned, he remembers being called a monster and asks, "If I die... will my death have any meaning...?" He answers himself, "I know..." and then unleashes his power, sweeping Marines away with his bisento and quake force. As men fly around him in shock, Whitebeard roars, "I am Whitebeard!!!" The declaration turns his wounds into a rallying point rather than a sign of defeat.

Whitebeard tells his men that he must watch over his sons' futures and says, "I can't afford to die!!!! Right, Ace?" His crew gathers behind him, declaring, "We will protect our boss's pride!!!" Meanwhile, the executioners again raise their blades over Ace, and Whitebeard challenges the Navy, "I'll show you the future right now if you want to see it that badly!" As the order "Do it!!!" is given, Ace braces for death while Whitebeard coughs and the battlefield screams his name.

Before the executioners can strike, a huge burst of will knocks them and nearby Marines unconscious. Luffy stands in the plaza and screams, "Stoooooop!!!" while Ace stares in shock. Ivankov asks if Luffy really just did that, and Luffy shouts, "I'm coming, Ace!!!" Garp recognizes the power and mutters, "That kid...!!!" Others realize, "That was the conqueror's...!!!" The blast stops Ace's execution at the last second and reveals that Luffy has Conqueror's Haki.
