Luffy's ramp toward the execution platform collapses while Marines and pirates look on. Someone shouts, "It's Garp the hero!!!" and another warns, "The bridge is falling!!" Ivankov yells, "Do something fast, Strawhat boy!!" Garp stands in Luffy's path and says, "Luffy, I've been fighting pirates since long before you were even born!!!" Garp tells Luffy, "You'll only get through here over my dead body!!! Strawhat Luffy!!!" Luffy calls him "Gramps!" and the words trigger memories of Garp training him and Ace as children. Garp had told Luffy not to be soft, that he would become the strongest Marine there is, and that the pirates would kill him in no time if he was weak. In the present, Ace watches from the platform as Garp says that this is the path the two brothers have chosen.

Luffy begs, "I can't do that, Grandpa!!! Please move!!!" but Garp answers, "If you can't, then Ace will die!!!" Luffy screams "No!!!" and says, "I've done plenty of things you don't like!!! I won't hold back!!!" Garp hardens himself and declares, "You're my enemy!!!" Sengoku, Ace, and the pirates watch in shock as grandfather and grandson rush toward a direct clash on the collapsing path to the platform.

Luffy powers forward in Gear Second while Garp prepares to punch him down. Garp's face is fierce, but the page flashes through memories of Luffy and Ace as children: Luffy crying, eating, and growing up under Garp's harsh care. Kizaru shoots at the key to Ace's handcuffs just as Luffy reaches the platform. The key snaps away with a sharp impact, and Ace stares in alarm. Luffy and Ace tumble onto the platform while the broken key falls below. The sudden loss of the key seems to ruin the rescue at the last moment: Ace is still chained, the platform is collapsing, and the Marines remain ready to execute him.

Ace remembers the key to his handcuffs and realizes what it was, while Luffy pants, "I've got the key, just wait!!" Ace snaps, "Luffy, you!!" Sengoku transforms with his giant Buddha-like ability, and a Marine shouts, "Look!! Fleet Admiral Sengoku's ability!!! I've never seen it before..." Sengoku towers over the platform and says, "Don't think I'll let you escape!!!" The rescue has reached Ace, but the fleet admiral himself now blocks the brothers' escape.

The broken key falls away and Marines shout, "Aaah!!! The key!!!" and "Get them!!" Sengoku declares, "I'll execute you myself!!!" Luffy suddenly notices Mr. 3 beside them; Mr. 3 says he blacked out for a second, and Luffy blurts, "3!!! Why are you here!?" Mr. 3 answers that he is making a key and that they will get the handcuffs off in a second. As Marines fire and order the whole platform destroyed, Luffy begins forming "Gomu Gomu..." to protect them.

Mr. 3 builds a wax "Candle Wall!!!" around Ace and Luffy while Luffy inflates into "Giant Balloon!!!" to absorb Sengoku's attack. The impact shakes the execution platform. Marines shout, "He grew gigantic!!?" and "The platform is crumbling!!!" while others realize, "Ace isn't dead yet!!!" The combined defense of Luffy's rubber body and Mr. 3's wax keeps Ace alive for the crucial second needed to finish the new key.

Mr. 3 explains why he is helping: "If I told you the reason I'm here is to fulfill my lost comrade's final wish, would you laugh at me!!?" When asked if he is going to save Ace, he answers, "Of course not!! Save your brother, Strawhat!!!" Luffy and Ace fall from the collapsing platform while the Marines fire at everything, shouting, "Take out the whole platform!!!" Mr. 3 gets the wax key ready and tells Luffy, "Go save your brother!!"

The platform explodes, but Ace and Luffy emerge through the fire. Marines say fire fist is defenseless and will not survive the inferno, but Ace appears freed, flames swirling around him. Ace scolds Luffy: "You've always been this way, Luffy!!! You never listen to me, and you do the stupidest things!!!" Luffy shouts, "Ace!!!" while Whitebeard watches with relief and the pirates roar. The rescue succeeds: Ace is out of his handcuffs and alive amid the burning wreckage.

SBS extra page. A reader jokes about admiring Chopper and wanting to go to medical school, and Oda turns it into a gag about wanting to examine Nami. Another reader asks how Marco's Phoenix mythical Zoan fruit differs from Ace's Mera Mera Fruit. Oda explains that Marco's power is a Zoan type, so he has a physical body, but his "blue flames of rebirth" let him regenerate from wounds and ignore attacks up to a limit. Those blue flames are for reviving himself and do not burn like Ace's fire; Ace's flames are different.
