The chapter resumes from the moment Akainu's magma fist pierces Ace while Ace shields Luffy. Luffy sits frozen in front of him, barely able to react: "...!!?" Flames and smoke pour from Ace's body as Akainu stands behind him. Around the battlefield, Whitebeard's allies and Marines stare in horror and shout, "They got Ace!!!" The page is dominated by shock, with no one yet able to move fast enough to undo what has happened.

The news spreads instantly through the battle and through Buggy's restored broadcast. Pirates scream, "Stop Akainu!!!" while Marines point rifles and the video screens show Ace being struck. Viewers shout, "Do-goon!!" and "Fire!!!" as the Den Den Mushi broadcast catches the disaster. Whitebeard, Marco, and the other commanders look horrified, and the battlefield erupts into panic while Akainu remains beside Ace and Luffy.

Akainu pulls back from Ace, leaving him smoking and collapsing in front of Luffy. A pirate warns, "It's no good, we can't stop him!!" and Akainu says coldly, "It looks like you're still alive..." Luffy screams, "Stop!!!" while others cry, "No more!!!" The page lingers on Ace's burned body, Luffy's panic, and Akainu advancing again as if one fatal blow is still not enough.

Jimbei charges in to stop Akainu, shouting, "Jimbei!!!" and striking with "Jigowa!!!" Other prisoners and pirates yell, "Undo my handcuffs already!!" and "Oh man!! I'm saved! I was about to..." Akainu tells him, "Stop wasting my time, Jimbei. You're a former Shichibukai. You should know my strength..." Jimbei answers that even if it costs him his body, he will hold Akainu back as long as he can: "My life has no value to begin with!!!"

Garp loses control and leaps toward Akainu, terrifying the Marines around him. They shout, "Vice Admiral Garp!!! What are you...!?" and "What are you doing, Garp!!?" Sengoku slams him down and restrains him. Garp snarls, "Haa...!! Hold me back just like that, Sengoku!!! Otherwise... I'm gonna kill that Sakazuki!!!" Sengoku calls him a fool and says it looks like he will need to punish Garp for high treason, while Akainu turns back toward Jimbei and Ace.

Before Akainu can continue, Vista and Marco strike at him together. Their allies shout, "Vista!! Marco!!!" Akainu notices the attack and says, "Haki users, huh...?" but his magma body reforms after the cut. He grumbles, "Ku...!! Ahh, how irritating!!" Vista and Marco stare in disbelief and say, "Don't you realize it's already too late for Fire Fist?" and "How could this have happened!? That one moment of carelessness!!"

Luffy holds Ace upright while both kneel in the smoke. Pirates shout, "Ace!!!" and riders rush across the battlefield, but Ace says weakly, "Luffy... !! I'm sorry..." Luffy panics, "Ace!!! Hurry, we've got to get you help..." Ace keeps apologizing: "Sorry I couldn't let you save me... Haa... I'm sorry..." Blood covers Luffy's hands and Ace's back while the fighting around them briefly feels distant.

Luffy refuses to accept Ace's words, shouting, "What the hell are you talking about!?" and begging, "Somebody help him!!! Please save Ace!!!" Chopper and other doctors are told, "Doctor, hurry!! Please treat him!!!" Ace says it is too late: "I can tell that my life is coming to an end... He burned up my insides... zeeh... I'm done for... so..." Luffy screams back, "What are you talking about? Ace, are you gonna die? You promised!!! Haa..." Ace asks him to listen.

Luffy cries, "You promised you wouldn't die!!! Isn't that what you said, Ace!!?" Ace answers that he only ever thought about living because of Luffy: "Yeah... just like with Sabo... If I don't have an annoying little brother like you... I would never have thought... to live..." He remembers people asking, "If Gold Roger had a kid?" and answering, "Kill him!!!" Others laugh about burning the child at the stake or stabbing him with needles, while Ace admits, "Everybody would say that... I can't blame them..."

Ace's memories continue with people saying, "I hope these are his last words!" and mocking, "I'm so sorry that a piece of trash like me was born." Young Ace snaps, "Shut up!! If I was strong enough, I would have killed them all!!" He remembers being asked, "Ace!!! Did you cause trouble in town again!?" In the present, Ace tells Luffy, "Oh yeah... When you see Dadan again... Tell her thanks... Now that I'm about to die... I even kinda miss her..." His one regret is that he could not see Luffy achieve his dream, but he says, "But I'm sure you'll do it... You're my brother after all...!!"

Ace says, "Just like... we swore... I've lived... with no regrets!!" Luffy cries, "No!! You liar!!" but Ace answers, "Haa... It's not a lie..." He explains, "The thing I really wanted... wasn't fame or anything. What I really wanted... was to know... that it was okay for me to be born..." Ace says he cannot talk much longer and asks Luffy to tell everyone else. Across the page, memories of people calling him worthless and others trying to save him surround his final message to "Old man," "Everyone," and "Luffy."

Ace gives his final thanks. As nearby pirates shout, "Ace...!!" and Luffy stares in disbelief, Ace smiles through tears and blood and says, "Thank you... for loving me!!!" The huge close-up shows him crying and smiling at the same time, with the final words filling the page. Luffy reaches toward him from the side panels, unable to stop what is happening as Ace's strength leaves him.

Ace's last thoughts echo back through earlier promises and doubts. He remembers asking, "Should I have been born?" and an earlier moment where Luffy says, "Gramps... I..." and "Ace...?" Ace recalls a promise between the brothers and his own challenge, "Did you think I was dead?" The page then returns to Ace lying motionless in a pool of blood in Luffy's arms, making clear that the remembered promise cannot save him now.

Luffy's memories answer the death in front of him. Ace once snapped, "What're you crying for!? Don't go killing me off, idiot!!" and promised, "I will never die!! I can't die and leave a weakling brother like you behind!" Another memory states, "If it's a boy... Ace... His name is Gol D. Ace." In the present, Luffy screams over Ace's body, blood spreading under them, while the promise that Ace would never die collapses before him.

A nearly blank white page leaves Luffy and Ace tiny in the lower corner. Luffy kneels in silence, still holding Ace's burned body against him after the final words and the memories of their promise. There is no dialogue on the page, only the visual aftermath: the battlefield noise has fallen away for the reader, and the empty space emphasizes the weight of Ace's death and Luffy's shock.
