DOG

In the ruined streets of Orange Town, a large "TA-DOOM" sound effect booms over the buildings. A Buggy Pirate declares, "WE'VE STOLEN TONS OF BOOTY, AND OUR NAME BRINGS TERROR TO ALL WHO HEAR IT!" while another shouts, "LISTEN UP, CREW!" Mohji the lion tamer, wearing a fur-collared coat and a round nose, addresses the crew: "SO ARE WE GONNA LET THREE LITTLE LOSERS MAKE FOOLS OF US!I" The pirates respond in unison, "NO SIR!!!" and "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!" Mohji then orders, "BRING OUT THE 'WILD ANIMAL SHOW'!" and declares, "IT'S TIME TO SHOW OUR ENEMIES JUST HOW TERRIFYING WE CAN BE!"

Mohji's lion Richie roars in the center as the crew chants "MOHJI! MOHJI!" A sign reads "BUGGY'S FIRST MATE MOHJI THE LION TAMER." Mohji stands atop the lion with arms crossed. Crew members cheer, "IT'S TIME FOR MOHJI'S WILD ANIMAL SHOW!!" and "CAPTAIN BUGGY..." One pirate asks, "MAY I TAKE RORONOA ZORO'S HEADI" while another growls, "TAKE ANY PART YOU WANT!" The lion snarls with "GRRRR!!" as Mohji prepares his attack.

A lone white page shows a small, scruffy white dog with a torn sack over its head sitting upright on the ground. The dog stares forward with narrowed eyes and a stern expression, its body tense and paws planted firmly. No dialogue or other figures appear, leaving only the solitary figure of the dog in the empty space.

Zoro pants heavily while glancing back, "They probably won't catch up to us too soon..." A voice replies, "We should be far enough from that tavern." In the street Luffy rattles the heavy iron cage, shouting, "I can't do anything stuck inside this thing!" Nearby voices debate, "But what are we gonna do about this cageI We got away... for now..." Moments later Zoro collapses face-down in a puddle, sword still at his side, muttering, "...got to... rest... It's no use... lost too much blood..."

A small white dog barks at the fallen swordsman as passersby notice, "DogI Hey, a dog!" The dog stares silently. Zoro, still exhausted, tells the animal, "It's his business if he moves or not. Our business is to get you out of there." Luffy peers from the cage, asking, "Who cares... It's not moving... Is it realI" The dog suddenly lunges and bites Luffy's hand through the bars; Luffy yelps, "Yow!!" while the dog growls. Luffy pokes the dog's nose, "Maybe it's dead," as a small "DOINK" sounds.

Luffy laughs and plays with the dog, shaking the cage bars while the dog chomps and growls, "Grrr arr chomp!" Zoro yells from the ground, "Luffy, stop playing around!" The dog continues barking, "Dumb dog! Lemme go, lemme go!!" Zoro lies motionless again, thinking, "Lost... too much blood!" The dog sits alert beside him. Suddenly a girl's voice cuts in from off-panel, "...Is the middle of the street really the best hiding place you could come up withI" Nami appears, hands on hips, adding, "Look at you two. Not to criticize, but..."

Nami stands over the cage and asks, "I just wanted to thank you for saving me... Thank usI" Zoro snaps back, "I never agreed to that! Hey! It's our navigator!" Luffy spots the dropped key and shouts with joy, "You stole the key!!! The key!!!" The key clatters with a "CLINK." Nami explains, "Then the rescue was a success... after all! This is great! I thought I'd never get out of here! I got the stupid key, but I left the map and all the treasure." Zoro smirks, "Hmph. Yeah, sure..."

Luffy crouches before the white dog guarding a key on the wet ground and reaches out. The dog growls with a loud CHONK. Luffy says, "HEY..." Sweat drops form as Luffy, Zoro, and Nami stare in shock at the unmoving dog. Suddenly the dog lunges and bites Luffy's arm with a massive SKRNCH. Luffy yells in pain, "THAT'S NOT FOOD!! GIMME THAT KEY!!" while struggling, "COUGH IT UP!!" The dog snarls and refuses to release its grip as Luffy pulls desperately.

An armored man with wild hair bursts in shouting, "DON'T YOU PICK ON POOR OL' CHOU-CHOU! DERN WHIPPER-SNAPPERS!" He towers over the scene with a massive spear. Zoro asks, "WHO'RE YOU, OLD TIMERI" The man roars, "I'M THE MAYOR OF THIS TOWN... THAT'S WHO!" A sign identifies him as "BOODLE MAYOR OF PORT TOWN". He demands, "WHO AM II" while the dog remains caged nearby.

Boodle explains, "THAT BOY'S LOST A LOT OF BLOOD! HE'S RESTING, MY HOUSE IS JUST THERE OVER THERE." Luffy asks, "WHERE'D YOU TAKE ZOROI" Inside, Zoro sleeps soundly with loud SNORR sounds. Boodle continues, "I TOLD 'IM THERE'S A DOCTOR AT THE REFUGEE SHELTER BUT HE SAID HE JUST NEEDS A LITTLE SLEEP!!" Outside the Pet Food store, Nami notes, "OH! SO HE'S A GUARD DOG!" Boodle adds, "HE'S GUARDING THE SHOP! THE DOG'S NAME IS CHOUCHOUI THAT'S RIGHT."

Boodle recalls, "ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO... HE AND CHOUCHOU OPENED THIS LITTLE SHOP. A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE OWNED THIS STORE." The old owner smiles and tells the dog, "CHOUCHOU! YOU'RE IN CHARGE WHILE I'M GONE. DON'T EAT UP ALL THE MERCHANDISE, Y'HEAR!I" Nami asks, "IS HE AT THE REFUGEE SHELTER WITH THE OTHERSI" Boodle answers, "I'M SURE THIS SHOP MEANS A LOT TO HIS MASTER, BUT THIS IS JUST CRUEL. PROTECTING HIS STORE... HE'S BEEN FIGHTING THE PIRATES... SEE THOSE WOUNDS..."

In the ruined streets of Orange Town, Luffy stands behind bars speaking with the curly-haired man Boodle, who sits smoking on the steps beside the white dog Chouchou. Boodle says, "NO, HE'S NOT..." Luffy replies, "HE GOT SICK AND PASSED ON." Boodle continues, "YOU'RE IN CHARGE OF THE SHOP WHILE I'M IN THE HOSPITAL. HE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL THREE MONTHS AGO." Chouchou barks, "RUFF!" In a close-up, Boodle explains with a serious expression, "THAT'S WHAT EVERYBODY SAYS, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT I THINK." Nami leans in as Boodle adds, "YOU MEAN HE'S BEEN WAITING FOR HIS MASTER THIS WHOLE TIMEI THE POOR THING..."

Luffy watches Chouchou eating from the bowl and says, "I THINK HE KNOWS HIS MASTER IS DEAD." The dog continues, "CHOMP CHOMP." Nami remarks, "CHOU-CHOU'S A SMART DOG..." Boodle, pipe in hand, tells her, "IT'S HIS TREASURE. THIS IS HIS MASTER'S STORE..." Nami asks, "THEN WHY DOES HE STILL GUARD THE STOREI" Boodle answers, "...BECAUSE IT'S ALL THAT'S LEFT OF HIS BELOVED MASTER. AND I THINK THAT CHOUCHOU STILL GUARDS THE STORE..."

Nami smiles quietly while Boodle explains, "BUT HE WON'T BUDGE FROM THIS SPOT. HE'D RATHER STARVE TO DEATH THAN LEAVE HIS POST. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET HIM TO THE SHELTER..." A massive roar erupts: "ROOWWRR!!!!" Boodle and the others react in shock as Boodle shouts, "IT MUST BE MOHJI, THE LION TAMER!! WHAT'S THAT HORRIBLE ROAR!I" The group gasps. Chouchou suddenly bolts down the street with Luffy yelling from behind the bars, "RUN!!! GIVE ME THAT KEY, DOG! SOMETHING'S COMING THIS WAY!"

A giant lion crashes onto the scene with Mohji standing triumphantly on its back. Mohji declares, "I'M MOHJI, BUGGY'S FIRST MATE. THEY CALL ME THE LION TAMER!" Someone off-panel asks, "WELL, WHAT HAVE WE HERE...I" In a close-up, Boodle looks grim and says, "AND AFTER ALL THAT EFFORT TO GET YOU THIS FAR... HA HA HA... LOOKS LIKE YOUR FRIENDS ABANDONED YOU."

Luffy stares in shock from inside a barred cage. "WHAT!I! HEY, WHAT'S WITH THE WEIRD COSTUMEI" Nearby, a massive lion named Richie growls furiously, "GRRR..." with a tiny figure perched on its head. A bearded man in a fur-trimmed coat snaps, "SHUT UP!" and adds, "THAT JUST MAKES IT WEIRDER." He glares at Luffy and continues, "IF SO, THEN YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW WHO I AM... MAYBE YOU THINK YOU'RE SAFE IN THAT CAGE..." The man roars in fury, "COSTUME!I THIS IS MY HAIR!!!" as Richie snarls, "KRSS KRSS GRRR..."

Mohji declares, "I CAN EVEN CONTROL THAT MUTT. THERE'S NOT AN ANIMAL ALIVE THAT I CAN'T CONTROL." Nami peeks from behind a building, thinking, "IS LUFFY PROVOKING THAT GUYI IS THAT BOY ADDLE-BRAINEDI" A small white dog barks at the scene. The lion rears up as Mohji laughs, "HA HA! DOG GOT YA! YOU'RE JUST A NO-BODY THIEF..." The dog lunges, "YEOW!! CHOMP! SHAKE!" Luffy shouts desperately from the cage, "NO!" Mohji demands, "NOW TELL ME WHERE RORONOA ZOLO IS. YOU'RE NOTHING TO ME." Richie growls, "GRRR..."

Richie smashes the cage with massive paws, "CHONK GROWWR!! KRAK!!" Mohji yells, "THEN DIE! GET HIM, RICHIE!" The cage shatters as Luffy bursts free, cheering, "HOORAY! I'M FREE!" Nami gasps in horror, "THE CAGE! THAT BOY'S A GONER!" Debris flies everywhere with impact sounds "!!" and "WOOSH" as the lion's attack lands.

A massive impact sends the lion flying backward, "KER... FWAA!! GROWWR!" Mohji calls after it, "C'MON, RICHIE, LET'S GO FIND RORONOA ZOLO. NOBODY COULD SURVIVE THAT. WELL, SERVES HIM RIGHT. KILLING HIM WILL GIVE OUR REPUTATION A BIG BOOST." Richie lands on all fours with a "PLUMP" and walks away carrying the small figure, leaving destruction in the street.

Luffy sits inside a cage while a massive lion-like beast sniffs around a pet food store. A small dog watches nervously from the street. The beast growls and charges, smashing through a building. Luffy, still caged, talks to the dog: "HAVE A SNACK, BUT BE QUICK ABOUT IT." The dog replies, "OKAY, FINE..." The beast pauses, sniffing, and mutters, "I SEE... A PET FOOD STORE." Someone asks, "WHAT'S WRONG...I" The beast growls loudly. In the next scene, the beast has been sent flying. Luffy stands free, fist raised, declaring, "OKAY, NOW I'LL SHOW ALL OF THESE CLOWNS... AND MAKE THAT THIEF, NAMI, OUR NAVIGATOR!" He adds triumphantly, "BUT AT LEAST I'M OUT OF THAT CAGE!!" with a loud "CHING" sound as he breaks free.
