Up in the Sky

A dramatic black-and-white splash page shows Luffy laughing joyfully while gripping the reins of a large, grinning, frog-like creature flying through swirling clouds. The beast has wide eyes and a broad toothy smile. In the background, the crew rides various fierce sky creatures: a massive horned beast, a dragon-like mount, and others. Chapter 237 "UP IN THE SKY". A massive, round-bodied creature with a tree growing from its head rampages through a tropical area, mouth wide open as it devours the tree. Small winged creatures fly nearby. A sign on a building reads "BRANCH FACTORY". A man in a cap pushes a wheelbarrow in the background. The caption reads: WAPOL'S EATING BANZAI Vol. 2 「I, THE GREAT KING, SHALL EAT A TREE」.

Luffy gasps desperately, eyes bulging, sweat flying as large Japanese SFX "クオホ クオホ" dominate the panel. He clutches at his throat, mouth open wide: "BREATHE...!!!...!!!" and "...CAN'T...!". In rapid succession he strains with more SFX "クオホッ", "サクン!!", and "クオホッ". Suddenly he is blasted outward in an explosion of debris and water, a small figure tumbling through the air. A large SFX "ドカーン" erupts as he shouts "PWAHH!!!!" with a smaller bubble "BAKI BAKI".

A vast ocean stretches toward a distant island under dramatic clouds and a bright light on the horizon. A small boat is tossed violently in massive waves with large SFX "ゴゴゴォォォォ...". A figure clings to the boat. In the next panel a close-up shows a man with a black beard laughing wildly, mouth agape, arms raised: "ZEHAHA-HAHAHA!!!" while another voice cries "WE LOST!! THEY GOT AWAY!!!".

A fish-like creature shouts in panic, "DON'T SAY IT LIKE IT DOESN'T MATTER. OUR PREY JUST GOT AWAY! THINK OF SOMETHING, CAPTAIN!!! HURRY, CHASE THEM DOWN AND BUST THEM UP!" Nearby, a long-haired man coughs violently, "SHARI...!!!" and mutters, "*cough*...!!! THOSE GUYS... ARE LUCKY." A man in a tall hat and goggles replies calmly, "MAKES ALL WHO ARE ON THE PATH TO BECOME STRONG...." Another voice agrees, "EXACTLY. SINCE THIS WORLD..." The tall man with the wide grin laughs, "ZEHAHA, QUIT WORRYING, BURGESS... IT'S NOT LIKE THEY'RE GONE FOREVER. WE'LL MEET AGAIN SOON, AS LONG AS THEY STAY ON THE GRAND LINE!!!" In a massive splash panel the ship sails through churning waves as large impact lines and SFX fill the sky. A voice declares, "JUST LIKE A GIANT GEAR. MEET EACH OTHER." The grinning man continues, "ZEHAH AHAHA... RIGHT!I YOU'LL SEE." while others cough, "*cough*!!!... YEAH..."

The Going Merry bursts upward with a massive "ばんっ!!!" sound effect, its figurehead grinning as the ship sails vertically. Below deck the crew coughs and gasps for air: "*COUGH*... *COUGH*...", "*COUGH*...GU... HAH...HAH...", "しー...ん", and "*COUGH* HAA... HAA...!!!" Luffy suddenly bursts in, eyes wide, yelling, "HEY, LOOK YOU GUYS!! OUTSIDE THE SHIP!!! HEY!!!" Nami stares in shock with sweat drops, Usopp looks tense, and Sanji glares while asking, "...!! DAMN... WHAT HAPPENEDI IS EVERYONE ALRIGHT..I"

The Going Merry sails across an endless sea of white clouds under a bright sky. Large SFX and motion lines emphasize the impossible sight. Luffy yells, "IT'S 5000 WHITE!!.....WHAT IS THIS PLACE!!!I" The crew panics below: "WHAT!!!I THINK OF SOMETHING! DO CPR!", "THIS IS BAD, USOPP ISN'T BREATHING!!!", "NO, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!! OF COURSE WE CAN SAIL ON TOP OF IT!! THEY'RE JUST CLOUDS.", and "ON TOP OF THE CLOUDS...!!!I HOW ARE WE SAILING ON CLOUDS...!!!I" Nami, Zoro, Sanji, Chopper, and Usopp stare out in disbelief as the ship glides over the cloud layer.

Nami stares upward with wide eyes and declares, "IS THE "SEA OF THE SKY"!! --IN OTHER WORDS, THIS..." On deck the crew debates: "WE NEED TO GO HIGHER...I", "--MAYBE THIS IS ONLY THE MIDDLE PART OF THE 'MILLENNIUM CUMULONIMBUS'...", "BUT LOOK, THE 'LOG POSE' IS STILL POINTING UP!!", "HOW...II", and "I HAVE NO IDEA. I FORGET." Usopp tumbles comically off the railing with a loud crash and spinning limbs while shouting, "HEY, HEY, HEY! DON'T FOOL AROUND. WE STILL DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS SEA!! OH! GO, GO!! FOR MY FIRST BIG COURSE--!!!! CAPTAIN USOPP WILL SWIM--!!!" Laughter and impact SFX fill the panel as the crew reacts to the sky ocean.

Luffy plummets through dense clouds, spinning wildly as he yells, "OOOH, I CAN DIVE DEEPER AND DEEPER." Bubbles and impact lines surround him while he struggles, thinking, "WAH...!!! THERE'S SO LITTLE RESISTANCE...!!!" and "ALSO...IT'S TOO BLURRY. I CAN BARELY SEE ANYTHING." Far below, a small ship sails on a sea of clouds as someone notes, "HE'S...STILL NOT BACK..." On the deck, Nami sweats nervously and asks, "JUST A THOUGHT, BUT...IS THERE REALLY......A SEA FLOORI" Usopp panics beside her, shouting, "YOU MEAN...!!!" Luffy continues falling toward them.

Sanji yells furiously from the ship, "I TOLD THAT IDIOT NOT TO FOOL AROUND!!" as Usopp plummets past the railing. Crew members shout, "USOPP--!!!" and "DID THAT IDIOT FALL OFF THE CLOUD!!I" Below, Robin grabs the falling Usopp, saying, "BUT I CAN'T SEE IF I ONLY RELY ON MY TOUCH...!!!" Usopp cries, "DON'T WORRY, I'LL HANDLE IT!!" while Sanji orders, "EXTEND YOUR ARM AS FAR AS YOU CAN!!!" Robin activates her power with the call "OJOS FLEUR!!!" as multiple arms sprout from clouds and the air, reaching desperately with sound effects "GYORO" and "GYORO".

Robin’s sprouted arms stretch through the clouds with heavy sound effects "バン" and "ブッ!!!" while she concentrates. Usopp plummets further, screaming in panic with large "あぁぁぁぁぁ" lettering. Nami reacts with shock, "WHERE!!!I" and "EH!I" as someone spots him: "THERE HE IS!!!" Robin calls out, "OK!! PULL HIM UP!!" and activates another technique, shouting "SEIS FLEUR!!!" Multiple arms grab Usopp mid-fall amid motion lines and impact sounds "ガシャッ" and "NYOK! NYOK! NYOK!"

Luffy stretches his rubbery leg from the ship’s railing and shouts, "Luffy!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!" while Usopp is yanked upward. Usopp yells "FUNNN KIGI-GIGI..." as he is pulled aboard. Nami and Chopper react with surprise, "YOU DID IT!! YOU PULLED..." A massive sea creature with a dragon-like head and tentacles bursts from the clouds behind them, roaring "YAAAAAAAH!!!" The crew panics as someone yells, "SOMETHING FOLLOWED HIM!!!" and "THEY WANT TO EAT USOPP!!!" The monster crashes toward the ship with huge impact effects.

A massive tentacled creature erupts from the cloud-sea as a projectile streaks toward it. The attacker yells, "--NOTHING TO BE SCARED ABOUT!!!" The beast recoils with a piercing "WAAAAAAAAAAH!!!" and a strangled "KAH...!!!" while the SFX ズバァ!!! marks the strike. Suddenly the creature bursts apart in a violent *POP*..., sending debris flying. The ship rocks violently beneath the crew as someone shouts "HUH!!I" amid the chaos of the exploding sky-octopus.

Zoro stands on deck gripping his swords, sweat on his face, as the crew stares at the bizarre floating creatures. Someone wonders aloud, "I WONDER IF THIS IS CONSIDERED A FISH..." while another remarks, "OH, THIS A WEIRD LOOKING ANIMAL." A tense "KL...N!" sounds nearby. The group debates the nature of the sky life: "LOOKS LIKE IT'S BETTER TO THINK OF THIS PLACE AS AN OCEAN RATHER THAN A CLOUD," "SO THERE ARE ANIMALS IN THE CLOUDS...," "IT'S STILL AN ANIMAL. IT WAS MOVING...," and "THAT OCTOPUS WAS LIKE A BALLOON..." They also question a flat snake-like form: "WHAT'S THIS FLAT SNAKEI" and conclude "IT'S A FLATFISH BECAUSE IT'S FLAT." Below deck, Nami looks concerned as Usopp tumbles wildly, crying "USOPP--!!!" and "MY PANTS..." while yelling "SO NOISY! WHAT IS IT THIS TIME, USOPP!!!" Usopp screams "GI-YAAAAA AAAAH!" as the Going Merry tilts dangerously.

Nami holds up a strange toothy fish and smiles, noting, "--I THINK BECAUSE THERE IS NO SEA FLOOR IN THIS SKY OCEAN, THEY MUST'VE EVOLVED INTO VARIOUS FORMS IN ORDER TO SURVIVE." She adds, "THEN...THIS WOULD BE A 'SKY FISH'I" and recognizes it as "IT'S THE STRANGE CREATURE DESCRIBED IN NORLAND'S DIARY." The crew samples the catch; Luffy and Sanji react with "WE WEREN'T DONE WITH IT YET!!!" and "THIS IS YUMMY!!!" while noting the creatures' adaptations: "THEIR SCALES LOOK LIKE FEATHERS..." and "YES, ALL TO MAKE THEMSELVES LIGHTER BECAUSE THE BUOYANT FORCE HERE IS MUCH WEAKER THAN SEA WATER." Suddenly a distant ship is spotted. Usopp shouts, "THERE IS A SHIP AND..." and "HEY--EVERYONE!!" as the crew reacts with surprise: "A SHIPI" and "OH! A SHIP..."

Chopper stares in shock, eyes wide, as someone calls, "HEY, WHAT IS IT, CHOPPERI" He gasps "EH...!I" while the ship rocks. Through binoculars Usopp confirms, "THERE'S A SHIP AND..." and the crew reacts with "!!!I" and "WHAT...!!" Chopper yells, "CHOPPER, A SHIPI A SHIP IS OVER THERE!I" as the Going Merry tilts. Usopp adds, "NO...UM, THERE WAS A SHIP..." and questions, "BUT THE SHIP WASN'T THERE ANYMORE!!" while the SFX ゴォォォォ... echoes. Sanji narrows his eyes and asks, "WHAT'S HE TRYIN' TO SAYI" Luffy panics, "THIS IS BAD--!!!" and Chopper cries, "I DON'T GET IT. CALM DOWN!!" Usopp warns, "THERE'S A BULL RUNNING ON A RECTANGULAR CLOUD. IT'S CHARGING FROM OVER THERE..."

High above the clouds, a winged figure on a flying device streaks toward a massive ship, shouting, "A HUMAN!I SOMEONE'S COMING!!" Below, someone yells, "IT'S RUNNING ON THE CLOUD!!!" The rider lands dramatically on a balcony as a blond man in a black suit gestures and shouts, "HEY, STOP. WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM!!" On the deck, Monkey D. Luffy stares in surprise with "HUHI WHATI" while Sanji glares and says, "HE'S GOT GUTS." Roronoa Zoro narrows his eyes, thinking "HE WANTS TO FIGHT..." as a massive masked warrior looms forward, declaring "ELIMINATE..."

The flying knight attacks with spinning blades, yelling "BOOHEH!!" as the Straw Hats react in shock. The rider is struck hard, crying "WOOH!!I" and "GUHAH!!" while crashing. The ship tilts violently with "GYAKIN" and "GYAH--GYAH--!!!" sounds. A small girl shouts, "EHI WAIT, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU THREE!! SKY ISLAND SO SCARY, SKY ISLAND SO SCARY." The masked warrior raises his weapon and roars, "THAT'S ENOUGH!!!" as impact lines and debris fly everywhere.

A woman with long hair watches in alarm as two winged fighters clash midair with "WHAT! WHO IS IT THIS TIME!!I" and loud impacts. The knight in ornate armor and winged helmet appears in a dramatic close-up, declaring "THE KNIGHT OF THE SKY!!" while a bird-like creature perches on his shoulder. He continues, "PI--!!" and "OOOH--I AM..."
