That Boy "The Straw Hat Wearing Luffy"

A narration box reads: "AFTER RECKLESSLY GOING OUT TO SEA WITH A LITTLE BOAT, THIS YOUNG MAN PLANS ON 'MAKING SOME FRIENDS' AND FORMING HIS OWN FLEET OF PIRATES." Seagulls cry "GAWK GAWK" overhead. Monkey D. Luffy lounges in a small wooden boat on calm blue seas, laughing with arms behind his head. A voice bubble says "AH! THE WEATHER IS PRETTY NICE TODAY" while another states "ON A NICE DAY LIKE THIS." Luffy wonders aloud, "WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT I'D GET INTO SUCH A DISASTER!I" A large blue SFX "ドーン!!" erupts at the bottom. The chapter title appears in red: "第2話 その男『麦わらのルフィ』".

A massive whirlpool forms with pink SFX "ゴゴゴゴゴゴ" and yellow impact lines. Luffy's tiny boat is pulled toward the swirling vortex. A voice cries, "WHAT A HUGE WHIRLPOOL." Luffy panics, "HOW CARELESS OF ME." The next panels show him realizing, "AND ON TOP OF THAT, I CAN'T EVEN SWIM" and "IT'LL BE REALLY BAD IF THIS BOAT WRECKS..." followed by "THERE'S NO ONE AROUND ME." The boat is sucked into the whirlpool with SFX "ゴゴゴゴ" and screams of "AHHH" and "WA!!" Luffy surfaces, declaring confidently, "AH! WAIT A MINUTE! IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER IF I KNOW HOW TO SWIM IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS" as the narration notes "SWIMMING WON'T SAVE YOU HERE."

SO PLEASE DON'T...!!!"

Alvida swings her massive spiked mace down with a loud "GACHIN!!" impact. Coby cowers, crying, "I DON'T WANT TO DIEEE!!! PLEASE DON'T HIT ME WITH YOUR BLUDGEON...!!" while another crew member laughs, "THAT'LL BE YOU, ALVIDA-SAMA! EH HEHEHE." Alvida's intense glare fills the panel as she declares, "SO I DON'T WANT THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF DUST ON MY SHIP!! DO YOU HEAR MEI THAT'S RIGHT!! AND THAT'S WHY I ABSOLUTELY HATE DIRTY THINGS!!" Coby is kicked hard, yelping "Y...YES MA'AM. THANK YOU VERY MUCH" and "SNIFF" as he wipes Alvida's red shoe. She continues, "I ONLY LET YOU LIVE THIS LONG BECAUSE YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT NAVIGATION THAN THE OTHERS," while Coby stammers, "Y...YES RIGHT AWAY MA'AM" amid more "GACHIN!!" strikes.

Alvida towers over the deck in her pink outfit and white cap, mace in hand, labeled "THE LADY PIRATE 'IRON MACE' ALVIDA." She orders, "KEEP CLEANING AND DON'T LEAVE ANY DUST BEHIND!!!" A crewman yells, "Y...!!! YES MA'AM!!!" while others scrub frantically. She kicks Coby again with a heavy "DON!!" and "GACHIN!!", shouting, "THAT'S ENOUGH FOR NOW!!!! YOU PIECE OF GARBAGE!!" Later, a relieved Coby smiles nervously and says, "RIGHT AWAY, ALVIDA-SAMA..." while another crewman suggests, "IF YOU HAVE TIME TO APOLOGIZE, WHY DON'T YOU GO CLEAN THE WASH ROOM!!" Coby replies, "EH... EH HEHEHE I...I'M SO SORRY."

Coby walks sadly along the shore toward the docked pink ship, thinking, "ON MY WAY..." Inside a wooden building, crew members discuss a barrel of sake that washed ashore. One says, "SHE WON'T FIND OUT!!" Another replies, "BUT IF THE CAPTAIN FINDS OUT, WE'LL BE..." They decide, "GREAT! LET'S ALL DRINK TOGETHER!!!" Coby enters pushing the barrel. The men panic briefly then grin, telling him, "YOU'RE RIGHT" and "WE'RE THE ONLY ONES CLEANING THE WINE CELLAR, SO ONLY US." Coby sweats and pleads, "OF...OF COURSE! I...I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING! EH HEHEHE... S...SO PLEASE DON'T BEAT ME..." as the crew laughs and gives thumbs up.

Luffy explodes upward from inside a wooden barrel, arms flung wide in triumph and a huge grin on his face. Shocked pirates tumble backward around him as debris flies. One pirate yells, "WHAT A NICE NAP THAT WAS!!!" Another screams, "WHAT THE HELLI!!" while others cry out in panic, "A H H H H H!!!!" Luffy laughs heartily and declares, "I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE TOO!! HAHAHAHA!!" He adds with relief, "LOOKS LIKE I'M SAVED." Massive red Japanese SFX "どん!!" and pink impact lines emphasize the sudden eruption.

Luffy stands with his back to the reader facing the stunned pirates. The crew reacts with confusion: "HUHI" and "!I" A blue SFX marks silence. Luffy suddenly spins and attacks, shouting "STOP SLACKING OFF!!!" His kick sends the barrel and several pirates flying in a massive crash. The pirates yell "WHY WOULD SOMEONE BE COMING OUT OF A WINE BARREL!I" and "WHO THE HECK ARE YOUI!!" while Luffy smirks. Huge red SFX "ドゴォーン" and impact sounds "KYA" "GYA" accompany the destruction as the barrel smashes through the area.

The pirates lie scattered on the ground after the impact, groaning with SFX "ポス..." and "プス..." One barrel rolls away. Alvida appears in a dramatic close-up, mace raised, demanding answers. The crew panics: "EHI...EHI! N...NO WE'LL NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT...!!" and "GOOD! THEN WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO DISOBEY MEI" Alvida asks, "THAT'LL BE YOU FOR SURE, ALVIDA-SAMA" and "I ASK YOU!!! WHAT'S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN ALL THE SEASI" A pirate recalls hearing the earlier quote "SAY 'WHAT A NICE NAP THAT WAS!' ALL THE WAY FROM THE SHIP!" while another reacts in shock.

Alvida rages, pointing her mace and shouting about betrayal: "...COBY! THAT BRAT DARES TO BETRAY MEI!" The crew speculates, "WHAT...I COULD IT BE SOMEONE WHO'S TRYING TO CATCH ME" and "THAT'S RIGHT!! ARE YOU ALRIGHTI DID YOU GET HURTI" while another voice says "YOU GOT KNOCKED PRETTY FAR."

In a forest clearing, Coby stands nervously before Luffy, who sits on a barrel. Coby introduces himself: "I'm a caretaker on this ship. My name is Coby." A sign reads "PIRATE SHIP CARETAKER COBY." He explains, "This is the breeding ground of the pirate 'Iron Mace Alvida'." Luffy reacts with surprise. Coby continues, "Actually, that's not important. I see." Luffy asks about a boat, and Coby panics, "You... you want a small boatI Well, I have one, but... A normal person would've died already..." Luffy presses, "Yea, that whirlpool was scary." Coby panics, "NO... NO I CAN'T! I'LL NEVER WORK! Whenever I think of Alvida-sama finding out, my legs turn all mushy...!!!" He trembles with SFX "ブン ブン ブン ブン ブン ブン". Luffy suggests, "Then you should leave." Coby replies, "But I don't have the guts to do it... Looks like I'm gonna be a caretaker my whole life. Although... I do have something else I wanna do." He adds, "Yea... I don't want it anymore. I was gonna run away in this." Luffy bluntly states, "You're pretty stupid and useless." Coby explains how he ended up on the ship by accident while fishing. Luffy asks, ".....Hey... Luffy-san, why are you sailingI" Coby responds, "But... you're right... If only I'm brave enough..." Coby laughs nervously, "EH... EH HEH EH HEHEHE EH HEHEHE HEHE...!!!" Luffy laughs back, "And you seem kinda wimpy too. I don't like you." SFX shows "ズォーーン" and "ガーン" as Coby sweats heavily.

Luffy declares with a huge grin, "I WANT TO BECOME THE PIRATE KING!!!" SFX "にいっ". Coby reacts in shock, "'PIRATE KING' WAS THE TITLE OF SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD!! EH......! WHATI! WHATI!" Luffy lounges back, "The 'ONE PIECE'!!I" Coby stares in disbelief, "ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR THE 'WORLD'S GREATEST TREASURE'...UHM" as dramatic impact lines burst around them.

Luffy ponders, "HMI WHATI" Coby thinks intensely, "...... I ALSO...... BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH MY DREAM......I!" with sweat drops and SFX "ドリップ". He continues, "......!! I'VE NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT..." Luffy smiles, "AL- THOUGH IT COULD GET PRETTY TOUGH. BESIDES, I THINK I CAN DO IT." Coby sits alone, wondering, "TO BECOME A MARINE...I!!! WILL I BE ABLE..." In a close-up, Coby cries out with tears, "HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM!!!" Luffy looks surprised, "A MARINEI" Coby adds, "LUFFY-SAN, I KNOW IT MEANS THAT WE'LL BE ENEMIES!! BUT JOINING THE MARINES AND CATCHING BAD GUYS..."

Coby clenches his fists and shouts with determination, "THAN STAY HERE AND BE A CARETAKER MY ENTIRE LIFE!! AND THEN ALVIDA-SAMA... I'LL BE ABLE TO ARREST SOMEONE LIKE ALVIDA!! I'D RATHER DIE TRYING TO GET OUT OF HERE AND JOIN THE MARINES!!" Luffy grins beside him. A large Marine with a spiked club suddenly appears and swings violently, yelling "WHO DID YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO ARREST, COBYI!" The impact sends debris flying as Coby is struck, crying "UWAH!!!" The Marine looms over him, roaring "ESCAPE FROM ME!I DO YOU THINK YOU CAN..." while Coby stares up in terror, sweat pouring down, thinking "MY BOAT..."

In a forest clearing, the Marine with the club demands of the pink-haired Coby, "IS THAT WHO YOU HIRED TO CAPTURE MEI HE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE RORONOA ZORO" as onlookers watch. Luffy's straw hat lies on the ground. The Marine points at a woman and bellows "WHO'S THIS RUDE WOMANI" while Coby sweats nervously. Luffy steps forward and declares, "IN ALL THE SEAS, THIS LADY IS THE MOST..." The Marine's eyes bulge in shock as Luffy continues, prompting the Marine to yell "LUFFY-SAN!! QUICK, REPEAT AFTER ME!!" Coby sweats heavily, his face flushed, as he thinks "THE RUDEST" and "BECAUSE THAT'S MY DREAM" and "AND THAT'S WHY I WON'T MIND DYING FOR IT". The Marine with the club looms behind him. Luffy bursts into loud laughter, "HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!" The Marine growls "DAMNED BITCH!!!!" while Coby trembles. The Marine then roars at Luffy, "YOU LITTLE BRAT!!! DON'T REGRET IT!! I'VE ALREADY TOLD MYSELF TO FIGHT FOR MY DREAMS!!" as Coby continues shaking in terror with his mouth wide open.

Luffy leaps into action with a powerful kick, sending the Marine with the club flying backward amid red impact lines and "HAVE TO DIE!" text. Coby shouts "LU... LUFFY-SAN!!" while the Marine yells "WELL SAID, COBY! NOW GET BEHIND ME!! BOTH OF YOU..." The Marine swings his bludgeon at Luffy's head, but Luffy smiles widely and states "IT'S USELESS AGAINST ME" as the weapon bounces off harmlessly. The Marine stares in disbelief, exclaiming "IM...THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!! MY BLUDGEON!" Luffy replies with a casual "HEH" as Coby watches in shock.

HIS ARM EXTENDED!!" Luffy stands tall and declares "HE WANTS TO JOIN THE MARINES!! SO STAY OUTTA HIS WAY! PREPARE A BOAT FOR COBY!" Coby weeps with tears streaming down his face, murmuring "LUFFY-SAN..." as Luffy grins widely. The remaining crew watches in stunned silence.

Aboard the small boat sailing across the open sea, Coby asks "THAT MEANS YOU HAVE TO GET INTO THE 'GRAND LINE,' RIGHT...I!" Luffy replies "YEP!" Coby continues "BUT... LUFFY-SAN, IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR THE 'ONE PIECE'...UM" while Luffy points excitedly. They discuss Roronoa Zoro: "YOU MEAN... RORONOA ZOROI" Luffy explains he needs a strong crew because the place is known as the pirates' graveyard. Coby warns "YOU CAN'T! HE'S LIKE A MONSTER!" but Luffy smiles and says "IF HE'S A GOOD GUY, I'D ASK HIM TO JOIN ME!" The boat sails toward the Marines' base as a caption notes "THE LITTLE BOAT SAILS TOWARD THE MARINES' BASE."
