Sogeking's scream cuts across the battlefield. "WAKE UP!!!" he shouts, while the others cry, "LUFFY!!!" and "WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!?" Luffy lies face-down in the rubble before Lucci, barely moving as the warships surround the bridge and the cannons thunder. On the Marine ships, soldiers stare at the Straw Hats' resistance and mutter, "WHAT ARE THOSE PIRATES?" One of them calls the fights "SUCH DREADFUL FIGHTS...!!" and admits the pirates are on par with the captains. The enemy is shaken, but Luffy is still down.

The fight around the convoy ship continues as Robin stays under guard and Zoro cuts through Marine officers. Sogeking stares toward the first prop, and Zoro recognizes what he is seeing: "USOPP..." Far below, Lucci stands over Luffy's battered body. Luffy still breathes, "HAA... HAA..." but he is pinned by damage and exhaustion. Sogeking's voice reaches him from across the broken bridge, and Luffy begins to understand who is shouting.

Luffy raises his bloodied face and finally recognizes the voice. "USOPP...!?" he says, stunned. "YOU... YOU'RE HERE...!!?" On the bridge, Sogeking stands at the edge, trembling and panting, but still calling out. Luffy cannot move more than his eyes and mouth, yet the sight of his friend being there cuts through the haze of pain. The reunion is not gentle; it arrives in the middle of cannon fire, collapsing stone, and Lucci waiting to finish the fight.

Sogeking panics and tries to explain himself before Lucci misunderstands. "D-DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME!!!" he shouts from the bridge. "I ONLY CAME HERE TO RESCUE ROBIN!!!" Luffy answers with a weak, "...GEEZ!!" and Sogeking turns his fear into a challenge: "HEY, YOU, THE BOSS CAT OF THE CP9!! I'LL BE YOUR OPPONENT!!! COME GET ME!!" Luffy jolts in alarm and screams, "HEY... DON'T...!!!" because he knows exactly how dangerous Lucci is.

Lucci barely cares about the challenge. "I HAVE NO BUSINESS WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN DEFEATED," he says, and adds, "I'LL KILL EVERYONE ANYWAY." Luffy tries to stop Sogeking: "DON'T START IT...!! DON'T TRY... YOU... HAA..." Sogeking yells back, "RIGHT, COME HERE, BOSS CAT!! I'LL BLOW YOU AWAY!!!" and Luffy coughs in panic, "ARE YOU AN IDIOT!? STOP IT, USOPP! YOU'LL GET KILLED!!!" Sogeking snaps at him instead: "SHUT UP!!! WHAT CAN YOU, A HALF-DEAD MAN, DO!?" Then he gives Luffy the only order that matters: "THEN STAND UP RIGHT AWAY!!!"

Sogeking keeps shouting over the smoke and gunfire. "DON'T ACT LIKE YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE!!!" he screams. "IT AIN'T LIKE IT'S HELL HERE!!!" Luffy, panting "HAA... HAA..." hears him. Sogeking points to the world still around them: even through the smoke, "WE CAN STILL SEE THE SKY...!!!" and "WE CAN STILL SEE THE OCEAN...!!!" Then he drives the point home: "THIS ISN'T HELL OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT...!!!" He is terrified, but he refuses to let Luffy accept defeat.

Sogeking promises the ending Luffy has to reach: "WIN!!! AND WE'LL ALL GO BACK TOGETHER, LUFFY!!!" Luffy answers with the smallest but strongest word: "OF COURSE!!!" The shout pulls him back into motion. He rises from the rubble, steam twisting around him again, and Lucci watches in surprise. "...YOU COULD STILL MOVE?" Lucci asks. Luffy, breathing hard, says, "I NEVER SAID... ANYTHING ABOUT GIVING UP!!"

Lucci releases "SEIMEI KIKAN" and changes his body, becoming slimmer and more controlled. "I'LL FINISH YOU OFF WITH POWER AT ONCE," he says. Luffy coughs and rises anyway. "DON'T WORRY ABOUT YOUR NAKAMA, STRAWHAT," Lucci tells him. "I'LL SEND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM TO THE SAME HELL!!!" The threat is meant to crush him, but Luffy has just heard that this place is not hell, and he refuses to let Lucci decide where his friends will go.

Lucci attacks with "MADARA" and batters Luffy with a storm of rapid Shigan strikes. Luffy is driven backward through the smoke, but he watches the pattern and refuses to be struck the same way again. I WADDA LIVE!!!" and Lucci had promised, "I'LL PURSUE THAT WOMAN TO THE END OF THE EARTH AND OBLITERATE HER...!!" Those words converge as Luffy calls "JET" and prepares the answer that matters.

Panels fill with repeated impacts, splintering masonry, and Lucci's body being forced back under the endless punches.
