White Monster

Chapter 764 begins under the title "CHAPTER 764: 'WHITE MONSTER'" with the side note, "Corazon's lie, what is the shocking truth?!" In a city alley, Law confronts Corazon after hearing him speak and demands, "Why?! How long have you been able to talk?!" Corazon answers simply, "Since always." Law is stunned, marked by "!?" In the next panel Law presses him: "...So then you've been lying to Doflamingo this whole time?!" Corazon says he never told Doflamingo that he became unable to speak; Doflamingo came to that conclusion on his own. Law calls that the same as lying to him. Corazon hides his face and says, "Silent" while another passerby calls, "Hey, hey, now hold on..." The page sets up Corazon's secret identity: his muteness is not an injury but a deliberate deception maintained inside Doflamingo's crew.

Corazon demonstrates why no one has heard his voice. Law looks around in shock and says, "Ehh!?" because the city around them has gone silent. Corazon explains, "Everyone's definitely talking, but I don't hear anything!! You were making a scene, so I put up a wall." He calls it "a 'sound-proof wall'" and says that from inside it they cannot hear sounds happening outside, and people outside cannot hear their voices either. Corazon reveals, "I am a silent human from the 'Nagi Nagi no Mi'." A translator's note adds, "T/N: Nagi means calm, silent. It can also be a kind of conifer." Law realizes the implication and shouts, "You're a Devil Fruit user?!" Corazon admits it, but Law screams, "What the hell?! You've been totally full of shit!! Wait, don't tell me!! Then...you always stumbling around clumsy like an idiot too..." Corazon grins and answers, "Fufu... Yeah... but of course..."

Law accuses Corazon directly: "LIAR!! Your damn shoulder's on fire!" Corazon, sitting with smoke rising from him, says, "It's all been an act." Law asks why he hid it from all of his friends and comrades, but Corazon snaps, "Shut up about that already!! The most unbelievable parts are all true though!!" He admits, "Well... I've never been able to get over being clumsy since forever... I've always been a klutz..." Law says he does not think of the Donquixote Family as comrades. Corazon's expression turns hard as he explains his reason: "My duty... as his younger brother... is to keep my older brother Doffy's 'madness' at bay. From such kind-hearted mother and father... how they could have given birth to such a monster, I'll never know." The page reframes Corazon not as a traitor to Doflamingo's family but as someone trying to restrain Doflamingo from inside it.

Corazon recounts the childhood catastrophe: "Aim your arrows at me! Come on!! These children have committed no sins!! Help meee--Uwaaaaah!!" In the memory of the mob, Doflamingo screams, "The pain... Law asks if Vergo is close to him, and Corazon says Vergo is extremely skilled and has absolutely nothing to do with Law. Corazon ends by warning, "Don't become a monster like my brother!! Get away from here, Law...!! You are a member of the fated family of 'D'."

Law asks what the D means, and Corazon answers with old stories. In one country, he says, children who misbehave are told, "You'll be eaten by 'D'." Elsewhere, the old people and elders all groan and mutter that "D" will surely bring with it the storm. Corazon says every time someone with the name D begins to make a name for themselves in the world, the elders react that way. Law asks if the actual truth is known, and Corazon admits that perhaps no one knows the actual truth. He does know that there is a land where the "family of D" is called "God's natural enemy." Law struggles with the phrase, asking "God?" and Corazon explains that if the Tenryuubito are considered gods, then the D are supposed to be the antithesis of god. The page gives Law a mythic reason for Corazon's fear: his hidden name places him in direct opposition to the world Doflamingo wants to rule.

Law rejects the abstraction and shouts that Doflamingo did not become subordinate to anyone; he became Doflamingo, joined a family, and asks what Corazon expects him to do. Law does not understand a word Corazon is saying. He says he became part of this family and, besides, he is going to die in one year anyway. Corazon insists, "Don't!! I'll bet he's gonna do a whole lot more to you than just kick you out!!!" Law demands, "It doesn't exist!! That Spudan Park... and a cure?" and Corazon answers that it does not matter if it exists; they should leave this place and search for a cure. Law asks whether he is simply supposed to be the antithesis of god, and Corazon says that instead Doflamingo is the complete opposite of that. In Law's eyes, Corazon is asking him to discard the only place he has left for a theory he cannot yet believe.

Corazon throws Law over his shoulder and runs, while Law yells, "You little shit!!" and "HYUU!!" The escape turns messy at once. Law crashes and skids with "ZWOSH!!" and screams "DAAAAAAAH!!" Corazon tells him that he has not just been fasting for three days to hear stupid shit from him. In town, Baby 5 asks if he needs money, Buffalo says he will lend cash someday, and another Donquixote member tells Law to make that jerk large, boss, because they will be in the family for years. Corazon walks off with Law despite the others' casual concern. Law, still furious, says, "Hey, Law!! broke the effect! He again, didn't you?" and the group tries to understand what Corazon has done. The page turns Corazon's serious warning into a kidnapping-like rescue: he is clumsy, rough, and bad at explaining himself, but he is determined to remove Law from Doflamingo.

On the boat, Law asks Corazon what he is planning to do with him. Corazon answers, "I'm going to heal your illness." The speaker warns that even if Corazon picks them, they will not leave, and that family has already become rather infamous. Corazon accepts the warning: "Understood." The page reveals that he is not simply a pirate executive fleeing; he has a mission post and a contact who knows him as Rosinante.

The call's other end reveals Marine HQ Admiral Sengoku. He says, "I'll leave this in your charge. Do as you please... I'll be waiting for your report." The Den Den Mushi answers, "Roger. I'll send the details in a letter." A label identifies "COMMANDER DONQUIXOTE ROSINANTE," with a translator's note stating that he was previously known as Donquixote Corazon and is verified as per this image. Sengoku notes this is his first year officially enlisted, but he has put in great effort already. Though first he points out the fried egg stuck to the man's left cheek. The page quietly establishes Rosinante as a Marine reporting to Sengoku while also introducing Vergo inside Marine ranks, tying the Donquixote Family and Marines together in a dangerous way.

Corazon tells him not to start whining or he will sound like an ordinary kid, then points to a huge hospital and says they must be able to heal him. Inside, a doctor says Amber Lead Sickness has been around for some time and asks, "Has a medicine been discovered for it yet, doctor?" But when Law says he is from "Flevance," the doctor's face hardens in fear. The page begins the cruel medical rejection that Law expected.

The hospital reacts with panic. A nurse screams "KYAAAAAAAH!!" and someone shouts, "He's gonna infect us...!!" The doctor demands gloves, disinfectant, and a gas mask, and says they should call the police and get in touch with the government quickly. Law lashes out, screaming, "Just look!! I'm not even human anymore!!" while Corazon grips him and snaps, "Enough...!!" An emergency broadcast announces that a child with Amber Lead Sickness is currently inside the hospital. Patients and staff yell, "White monster--!! Please, just go back to where you came from!!" and "Hey, you!! You have some nerve bringing that kind of kid around here!!" Corazon's eyes go cold as he sees the fear; then he explodes through the hospital with a violent "BAFNAH!!" The page shows Corazon's attempt to find medical help collapsing into the same prejudice Law warned him about.

Outside the hospital, Corazon apologizes to Law: "I'm sorry... did that make you think of the past...?! That hospital was the worst!! ...This is why I said I didn't want to go to the hospital!!" Law screams, "Just forget it!!" but Corazon insists, "But we'll find a capable doctor next time!!" The townspeople behind them still panic. They call for the place to be disinfected and yell that Amber Lead Sickness is present. One person cries, "Someone, anyone, come quick!!! There's a survivor from the White City!!!" another points at Law's white skin and says, "He has white blemishes on his skin!!!" Corazon and Law are chased away as people scream, "Go away~!!" and "Uwaaah, we're gonna get infected!!" Others shout toward the government, "There's a survivor from Flevance! Why didn't you exterminate them all?!" and "Hello, World Government?!" Law tells Corazon, "Just let it go already!! I'm not interested!!" but Corazon keeps pulling him toward the next town.

A montage shows Corazon and Law trying again and again. People yell, "And you call yourself a doctor?!" while Corazon asks if Law will be healed or die. Others say he has already been to a hospital and now the boy with Amber Lead Sickness is nearby, asking, "Where did those two go?!" and "Lock down the hospital!! He's trying to come in--!!" In one town, the crowd shouts, "It's Amber Lead Sickness!!" and Corazon asks, "Is this for the sake of 'D'...?" Law looks exhausted and wonders, "What am I doing... to this boy who was born in that tragic town...?" A caption jumps to "6 months later." Corazon realizes that without being able to help him even in the slightest, all he is doing is making Law remember all of that tragedy. He finally says he no longer cares about the D: "I know back then... you stabbed me... but... I just felt sympathy... for this stupid little runt... who's never known anything but pain."

Corazon lies on the ground weeping and tells Law, "It didn't even hurt...!! You were the one that was hurting... so all I could do was feel compassion for you...!!" He calls out, "Law...!!" while Law stands nearby, stunned into silence as Corazon sobs and sniffles. In a small slapstick beat, Corazon tumbles with "OWW!! CLANG! STUMBLE," but Law's expression has changed. He asks, "What's with that face?!" and Law says, "You just called me 'Cora-san'... Whatever... just answer the Den Den Mushi already!!" The Den Den Mushi rings, "PURU RURU!!" and a voice shouts, "Hey, Cora-san!! Cora-san, wake up!!" Corazon answers with a click and says, "It's me, Corazon." The side note calls it "A sudden, unexpected report?!" and the chapter ends with "ONE PIECE ...CH. 764 END." The page completes the turn in Law's heart: Corazon is still absurd and clumsy, but Law has begun to trust him.
