Whitebeard shakes Marineford itself while his sons cry, "Boss!!!" and beg, "We can't leave you behind, boss!!! Let's go back together!!!" Whitebeard snaps back, "Didn't you hear my order!? Get going!!! You idiots!!!" Marines and pirates shout, "Stop Whitebeard!!!" as the island quakes. Voices scream "Uwaaaaahh!!!" and warn, "Marineford is in danger!!!" and "He's really trying to sink the entire island!!!"

The Marines swarm Whitebeard, shouting, "Take out Whitebeard!!!" and "He's half dead already!!!" They shoot and stab him from every side while the battlefield screams "Gyaa-aahh!!" Whitebeard remains standing in the middle of the attacks, covered in weapons and wounds. Ace and Luffy look back in horror, yelling "Ace!!" and "Boss!!!" Other pirates urge them to obey: "Hurry!! Do what the boss says!!!"

The retreat begins as pirates shout, "Get ready to depart!!! Launch the ship!!!" and call, "Squad Leader Marco!! Let's go!!" Marco stares back and says, "Boss..." Sengoku is warned, "Fleet Admiral Sengoku!!" and answers that there is no reason to worry about Ace now because Whitebeard is seriously planning on sinking Marineford into the sea and taking himself with it. Marines check on Garp, asking, "Vice Admiral Garp!! A-are you all right!?" Garp mutters, "Putting an end... to the era... Sounds like a good time to me..."

Buggy's men discover that the broadcast is live again: "Captain Buggy!! The video Denden Mushi is back up!!!" Buggy roars, "All right!!! Put it up!! Show my face," and boasts, "Just as I take Whitebeard's head!!!" The broadcast resumes with "It's on!!!" Viewers see the ruined execution platform and shout, "Completely destroyed!?" and "What happened to Whitebeard!?" Buggy appears on screen, shouting, "Why hello everyone!! It's Buggy!!! The legendary-" only to be recognized with "You again!?"

The pirates rush for the harbor while voices shout, "Get to the coast!!!" Marines answer with, "Don't let the pirates escape!!!" and "Take down as many as you can!!!" Whitebeard plants himself before the Marine forces and declares, "Your only opponent... is me!!!" The island splits and rumbles under his power as the pursuing forces are thrown into chaos.

The pirates continue the evacuation, yelling, "Squad Leader Joz!!!" and "You're still alive, right? Let's get..." Another pirate orders, "Brenhaim!! Carry Joz!!!" while wounded men cry, "Uwaah!!!" Ace notices Luffy still nearby and shouts, "Strawhat boy!!! Why are you standing around!?" Luffy calls back, "Ace!!!" One fighter yells that the old man is prepared, and Ace grimly says, "...!! I know!! I won't let it be in vain!!!" Whitebeard clears enemies with "Get the hell out of my way!!!" as Ace is forced to keep moving.

Whitebeard and Ace face each other through the smoke and noise of the retreat, with Luffy and the others already being pushed away in the background. Ace pants, "Haa... Haa..." while Whitebeard says, "I don't need your words... But let me ask you one thing... Was I... a good father?" The question cuts through the battle. Ace breaks into tears and answers without hesitation, "Of course!!!" Whitebeard laughs softly, "Gurararara..."

Jimbei shields the retreat, telling Ace and Luffy, "Run! Get to the ship!!!" and "Ace!! Luffy, get in front!!" A pirate warns, "They're gunning for you!!! The boss wants as many people to survive as possible!!" Hancock urges, "Hurry, Luffy!!!" The pirates announce, "We stole a battleship!!! Quick, get on!!!" while the broadcast audience cries, "The execution platform is being destroyed!! What happened to Ace!? Show us Whitebeard!!" Akainu watches and says, "Do they really think they can escape?! How adorable..."

Akainu erupts from the smoke and lava as Marines shout, "Look out!!! It's Akainu!!!" and pirates scream "Uwaaaah!!!" He mocks the retreat: "They save Ace and then immediately run away? What a bunch of cowards you are, Whitebeard Pirates." He adds, "But he is the captain... I guess there's no helping it!! After all, Whitebeard... is a loser from a bygone age!!!" Ace stops cold and repeats, "A loser?" while Luffy and the others react in alarm.

Ace turns back, furious: "Take back... what you just said!!!" Luffy and the others yell, "Stop, Ace!!! Keep going!!!" and "Ace!!!" but Ace says, "He's mocking my old man..." Akainu continues the provocation: "Your real father, Roger, stood in his way. And so Whitebeard is a loser who will never become king... How am I mistaken? You bunch of thugs keep yelling Boss this, Boss that... You prance about the seas pretending to be a family." A voice yells, "Stop right there!!"

Akainu says Whitebeard spent decades ruling the seas while "never becoming king" and "never accomplishing anything," then sneers that he lived an empty life and died protecting a stupid son fooled by sweet talk. The pirates shout, "Don't listen to him, Ace!!! Come on!!!" and insist, "The old man gave us a place where we belonged!!! What do you know about his greatness!?" Akainu calls them pirates who do not deserve a place to belong and declares, "Whitebeard will die as a loser!!! A fitting death for the admiral of a mountain of garbage!!!" Ace burns with rage and says, "Whitebeard is the pirate who created this era!!! Don't mock the man who saved me!!!"

Ace attacks Akainu and shouts, "This era will be known... by Whitebeard's name!!!" Akainu overpowers him and says, "Did you get careless because you're a Logia type as well? You are merely 'fire.' I am 'magma' that consumes 'fire'! My power completely outclasses yours!!!" Ace is burned and knocked down while the others scream, "Ace!! He was burned!?" Akainu then turns on Luffy, saying, "Great sin already runs through your blood! No matter who else escapes, I will never let you two brothers go!!! The Pirate King, Gold Roger! The revolutionary, Dragon! I'm amazed that their two sons turned out to be brothers!!" Luffy, at his limit, drops Ace's vivre card with "Ace's... vivre card..." as Akainu says, "Take a good look..." and Ace shouts, "Luffy!!!"

Luffy bends to pick up Ace's vivre card and only manages, "Eh?" before Akainu's magma fist comes down. Ace throws himself in front of Luffy and takes the blow through his body. The page falls almost silent except for impact marks and Ace coughing, while Luffy stares in shock at Ace being pierced and burned by Akainu. A small note marks this as the end of Volume 58.
