In the ruins of the Shikkearu Kingdom on Kuraigana Island in the Grand Line, a stern-faced man with a goatee glares forward. A speech bubble reads, 'I'M BEGGING YOU...' The scene shifts to a grand ruined hall where a small figure kneels before a throne. Large text declares, '...THE WAY OF THE SWORD!!!' and 'TEACH ME...' A seated figure on the throne responds with '........' The kneeling man, identified as Roronoa Zoro, looks up intensely. A voice says, 'KNOW YOUR SHAME.' Zoro replies, 'YOU MEAN TO ASK FOR TEACHINGS FROM YOUR ENEMY...I' and continues, '...I AM DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, RORO-NOA ZORO...'

Mihawk sits on his throne in the vast ruined hall and states, 'IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE EXPECTATIONS I HELD OF YOU WERE TOO HIGH...' He continues, '...AND AFTER ALL THAT, YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO COME CRAWLING BACK HERE. I HAVE NOTHING TO TEACH THE LIKES OF YOU...' while noting Zoro was 'DEFEATED BY THOSE BABOONS, UNABLE EVEN TO ESCAPE TO SEA...' Zoro, kneeling with a bottle nearby, shouts, 'I WANT TO BECOME STRONG...!!!' Mihawk asks, 'MUST YOU CONTINUE...I IT PAINS ME TO WATCH.' In a sudden clash, swords fly as Mihawk declares, 'YOURS IS THE ONLY HEAD I HAVE YET TO TAKE.' Zoro, bloodied and bound, yells, '...THE BABOONS, I HAVE DEFEATED...!!!' Mihawk reacts with shock, '...HE DID WHAT...I!'

Zoro demands, 'I DO NOT UNDERSTAND... IF YOU STILL CONSIDER ME AN ENEMY... THEN WHY WOULD YOU PROSTRATE YOURSELF BEFORE ME AND ASK FOR MY TEACHINGS...I!' and 'WHAT PURPOSE DOES THIS SERVEI!' Mihawk answers from his seat, 'THAT I HAVE ANY HOPE OF DEFEATING YOU HERE AND NOW...!!!' and 'BUT I AM NOT FOOL ENOUGH TO BELIEVE...' Zoro, face intense, declares, 'SO THAT I MAY SURPASS YOU...!!!' Mihawk smirks and laughs, 'WAHAHAHAHAH...!' while saying, 'HMPH... A RIDICULOUS NOTION. The bandaged man with a scar replies, "WE CAN ONLY BEGIN TRAINING ONCE YOUR WOUNDS ARE HEALED." In the next panel a woman with a skull-like hat is ordered, "TEND TO HIS WOUNDS! GHOST-GIRL!" She snaps back, "AHH!! DON'T YOU DARE ORDER ME AROUND!!" The conversation turns to a newspaper photo showing a crossed-out tattoo on the bandaged man's shoulder. Someone notes, "OF COURSE, YOU KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT... MY CREW AND I HAD AGREED TO MEET UP IN A CERTAIN LOCATION AFTER THREE DAYS..." Another adds, "YOU'RE RIGHT... THERE IS A TATTOO LIKE THAT ON HIS SHOULDER..." The group realizes, "SO THE '3D' REPRESENTS THOSE 'THREE DAYS'I" The bandaged man holds up the paper and declares, "THERE'S NO POINT RUSHING THINGS; WE'RE NOT READY TO TAKE ON THE NEW WORLD RIGHT NOW.....!!! ALL THE REST WAS JUST A BLUFF TO DISTRACT THE WORLD FROM THE REAL MESSAGE... WE'RE TO MEET UP NOT AFTER THREE DAYS, BUT IN TWO YEARS' TIME...!!!" The woman concludes, "IN OTHER WORDS... BUT IT'S BEEN CROSSED OUT, AND THEN IT SAYS '2Y'... SO WE STAND FIRM AND BUILD OUR STRENGTH, AND ONCE WE'RE DONE, THAT'S WHEN WE MEET UP AGAIN!!!...AND THIS IS LUFFY'S DECISION." The bandaged man sits in a chair and echoes, "'TWO YEARS'....!"

Chopper sweats nervously in his hat while clutching his face. Franky, bandaged and grinning, leans in close and shouts in a massive speech bubble, "IN TWO YEARS' TIME!!!" Below, Nami smiles with hands clasped near her face as Brook plays his guitar with a skull visible on the instrument.

Nami appears with an excited expression. Franky, covered in bandages and mechanical parts, yells with wide eyes. Luffy, heavily bandaged with a straw hat, sticks out his tongue in shock. Sanji, with a cigarette, smirks confidently. A large speech bubble declares, "AT THE SHABONDY ARCHIPELAGO!!!"

A large ship with dragon figureheads sails on the sea as a voice calls, "...FOR EVERYTHING!!" Jinbe waves from the deck, replying, "JIMBEI... THANKS SO MUCH..." A sign reads, "A FEW DAYS AGO, UPON THE CALM BELT." Jinbe continues, "YET I FEEL SURE THAT THE DAY WILL COME WHEN I CAN LEND YOU MY STRENGTH ONCE MORE....ONLY TO ULTIMATELY SURVIVE, HOWEVER SHAMEFULLY... BACK IN IMPEL DOWN, I ASKED YOU TO BRING ME TO A CERTAIN DEATH... NO NEED FOR THAT... IT IS I WHO SHOULD BE THANKING YOU...!!! AT ANY RATE..." The scene shifts to a bustling Fish-Man Island street where Luffy, bandaged and smiling, raises his fist and shouts, "YEAH!!!" A large bubble states, "TWO YEARS FROM NOW... LET US MEET AGAIN, ON FISH-MAN ISLAND!! I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DAY WHEN YOU AND YOUR CREW COME TO CALL!!"

Luffy stands on the shore of a rugged island, promising Hancock, "LUFFY! I SWEAR... EACH AND EVERY DAY, I WILL VISIT THIS ISLAND......TO BRING YOU NEW PROVISIONS FROM THE ISLE OF WOMEN!" Hancock blushes as narration explains the location: "THE CALM BELT: AN ISLAND NORTHWEST OF THE ISLE OF WOMEN, 'RUSUKA'" and describes it as the "FORTY-EIGHT SEASONS" harsh land. Luffy then excitedly asks Rayleigh, "WHOAAAA AAAA!! YOU MEAN THAT, HANCOCKI! CAN YOU BRING ME SOME OF THAT FAMOUS GORGON-WHAT'S-IT-CALLED STUFF, THENI! IT WAS REALLY TASTY...!" while a woman in the background yells "IT IS NYOT!!" and questions why they are moving further away. Hancock protests, "B... BUT OF COURSE!! I WILL BRING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU DESIRE!! AND THAT WAS THE TENTH TIME YOU HAVE CALLED ME BY NAME... ♡ I... IS THIS WHAT THEY CALL 'ENGAGEMENT'...I!" Rayleigh warns, "HANCOCK, WE CANNOT HAVE YOU SPOILING THE BOY....!!" as Hancock retorts about Luffy's training and the women not entering the place. Luffy questions the island's danger while Rayleigh and Hancock argue over provisions and survival skills.

Luffy shouts with excitement, "I SMELL ADVENTURE...!!!" as massive sound effects "ズクズクッ...!!" erupt. Rayleigh explains the island's perils: "MANY OF THEM ARE TOO POWERFUL FOR YOU TO DEFEAT IN YOUR CURRENT STATE... I WOULD SAY... YES, FIVE HUNDRED OR MORE. IF YOU DO NOT TRAIN HARD, YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO SLEEP SAFELY AT NIGHT...! WHY, THIS ISLAND IS HOME TO A VERITABLE MULTITUDE OF TERRIBLE BEASTS...!!! MORE THAN YOU COULD HOPE TO COUNT." Luffy asks about the power known as "HAKI!!!" and how to master it. Rayleigh continues, "THE POWER KNOWN AS 'HAKI'!!!" while Luffy stands before ancient ruins on the dangerous island, with narration noting a long-lost nation and that "THIS IS A PERILOUS LAND, FRAUGHT WITH NATURAL DANGERS...!!!" and "NOW, THEN... WE ARE THE ONLY TWO HUMAN BEINGS LEFT ON THIS ENTIRE ISLAND. FEAST YOUR EYES UPON THE GLORIES OF NATURE!! THEY SAY THAT LONG AGO, A NATION STOOD HERE... BUT ALL OF ITS PEOPLE PERISHED IN THE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL..."

A gigantic elephant charges with a roar "RGHOOOOHHHH!!!" as Rayleigh warns Luffy, "LISTEN CLOSELY, LUFFY-KUN... 'HAKI' IS A POWER......THAT EXISTS WITHIN EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING. 'PRESENCE'... 'SPIRIT'... 'AURA'... IT IS NO DIFFERENT FROM THESE BASIC CONCEPTS WITH WHICH ANYONE SHOULD BE FAMILIAR." Luffy yells in shock, "AN ELEPHANTI! WOW, IT'S GIGANTIC!!" while Rayleigh dodges the trunk swing, shouting "WATCH OUT!!!" and "OBSERVE CAREFULLY..." The elephant attacks again with "RGHOOOHH!!!" as Rayleigh explains, "HOWEVER, THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE GO THROUGH THEIR WHOLE LIVES WITHOUT EVER NOTICING THEY POSSESS IT......OR ELSE TRY AS THEY MIGHT, NEVER SUCCEED IN MAKING USE OF IT. HAKI CAN GENERALLY BE DIVIDED INTO TWO MAIN SHADES. TO FEEL NO DOUBTS... THAT IS TRUE STRENGTH!!!" Luffy reacts with surprise "HUHI" as the lesson on Haki continues amid the chaos.

Rayleigh teaches Luffy about Haki amid the elephant's rampage. He states, "MASTER IT, AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PERCEIVE ENEMIES WHO LURK HIDDEN OUT OF SIGHT... TO GRASP THEIR NUMBERS, AND EVEN TO READ WHAT THEY ARE ATTEMPTING TO DO IN THE NEXT MOMENT. THIS IS 'OBSERVATION HAKI'!!! THE POWER TO FEEL ANOTHER'S 'PRESENCE' TO AN ELEVATED DEGREE..." Luffy dodges and reacts with "AHH...!!" and "HUHI!" as examples of "MANTRA" from Skypiea are shown with kicks and impacts. Rayleigh continues, "...THIS ABILITY IS KNOWN AS 'MANTRA' IN THE SKY ISLES OF SKYPIEA..." and introduces the next type: "NEXT, WE HAVE 'ARMAMENT HAKI'. THIS SHADE......IS SOMETHING LIKE WEARING AN INVISIBLE SUIT OF ARMOUR..." The elephant roars "RGHO OOHH HHHH!!!" and "RGHOHH!!" while Luffy is knocked around with sound effects like "ドォオオオ" and "ズゴッ". Rayleigh concludes the demonstration as the battle rages on.

The massive elephant-like beast reels from a powerful blow, its trunk flailing as impact lines and debris explode outward. "RGO HHI!!" it bellows in pain. Luffy, in the foreground, clutches his fist and shouts, "THIS IS THE ABILITY'S MOST IMPORTANT USE." The creature continues to thrash, roaring "RGHOO OHHH HHHHI!!" while a voice notes, "I'VE... SEEN THAT BEFORE....!" Rayleigh stands nearby with an outstretched hand as the beast is struck again. Luffy grimaces, "IT HURTS...!! EVEN THOUGH I'M MADE OF RUBBER!! IT ACTUALLY HURTS!!" The elephant's armor-like hide is struck once more, producing the cry "RGOOOHHH!!!" as Rayleigh explains, "NATURALLY, STRONGER ARMOUR ALSO RESULTS IN MORE POWERFUL ATTACKS."

Rayleigh stands with his hand raised, explaining the nature of Haki. "...CAN BE FORCED INTO SOLIDITY...!!!! WITH IT, EVEN THE FLUID BODIES OF THE NEAR-INVINCIBLE LOGIA FRUIT USERS......THIS "ARMAMENT HAKI" IS THE SOLE METHOD OF EFFECTIVELY COMBATING THEIR ABILITIES...!! WHEN FACING A DEVIL FRUIT USER, OTHER THAN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL WEAKNESSES..." Luffy listens intently. I THOUGHT THOSE ARROWS WERE MADE OF STEEL!" Rayleigh concludes the panel sequence by asking, "HAVE YOU EVER WITNESSED THE BOWMANSHIP OF THE KUJA TRIBEI"

Rayleigh gestures as he reveals the final form of Haki. "THIS IS THE ABILITY TO OVERPOWER THE OPPONENT'S WILL... IT IS CALLED "SOVEREIGN HAKI"....!! IT CAN OFTEN BE FOUND IN THE TYPE OF PEOPLE WHO MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES ON A GLOBAL SCALE. HOWEVER, WHILST IT CAN BE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL, THE SOVEREIGN HAKI IS UNIQUE IN THAT IT CANNOT BE TRAINED." A massive impact strikes the elephant-like beast with the enormous sound effect "ドスゥーン". Luffy stares in shock, remembering, "...THAT'S WHAT YOU USED BACK IN THE AUCTION HOUSE...!" Rayleigh continues, "IT IS THE USER'S VERY SPIRIT MANIFEST...!! IT CAN ONLY BE STRENGTHENED BY THE INDIVIDUAL'S PERSONAL GROWTH. UNTIL YOU HAVE BROUGHT IT UNDER CONTROL, YOU MUST AVOID OVERUSING IT AT ALL COSTS. YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED IT FOR YOURSELF, I KNOW THAT YOUR POTENTIAL FOR THE SOVEREIGN HAKI HAS ALREADY BEEN AWAKENED. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF OVERPOWERING EVEN THOSE INNOCENT BYSTANDERS AROUND YOU...!!"

Luffy stands victorious before the defeated elephant-like beast, grinning widely. "...HAH AHAH! HAVE I EARNED A LITTLE RESPECTI SO THE CREW OF THE PIRATE KING... CAN DEFEAT MONSTERS LIKE THIS......WITHOUT EVEN LIFTING A FINGER..." Rayleigh smiles beside him. "WOW... YEAH" Luffy looks surprised as Rayleigh asks, "IS SOMETHING THE MATTER....I" The beast lies motionless while Rayleigh explains, "I DO NOT DOUBT IT... YET MASTERING IT WILL NOT BE A SIMPLE TASK... I'VE SEEN IT BEFORE, IN ALL SORTS OF PLACES......BUT, THIS HAKI STUFF......HOWEVER, MOST PEOPLE HAVE A TENDENCY TO DEVELOP INEQUALLY, FAVOURING ONE SHADE OVER THE OTHERS BASED ON THEIR OWN STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES....OF THE THREE TYPES OF HAKI....TO GROUND YOU IN AT LEAST THE BASICS... ORDINARILY, IT WOULD TAKE LONGER... BUT YOUR NATURAL TALENT FOR THIS IS STRONG. I WILL DO WHAT I CAN IN THESE TWO YEARS... YOU SHOULD DETERMINE WHERE YOUR STRENGTHS LIE, AND EXPAND UPON THEM. Luffy sits with his straw hat tilted back, grinning as he declares, "...THE PIRATE 'STRAW HAT LUFFY'......IS GONNA HAVE TO TAKE A BIT OF A BREAK." Rayleigh responds from off-panel, "YEAH!! THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO HEAR!!!" and "I WILL NOT BE AN EASY MASTER, LUFFY...!! NOW, THEN... WHEN IT COMES TO TRAINING..." A small voice adds, "AHH... HANG ON A SECOND." The scene shifts to the volcanic island of Rusukaina. Luffy shouts, "ALL RIGHT!! LET'S GET TO IT, OLD MAN!" while Rayleigh answers, "HURRY IT UP!! IT'S TIME WE GOT STARTED!!" They examine a small scrap of paper. Luffy confirms, "THAT IS CORRECT. YOU SAID THIS IS THE ONE SAFE SPOT ON THE ISLAND, RIGHT...I" In a dramatic close-up from behind, Luffy faces Rayleigh and yells, "I'M COUNTING ON YOU FROM NOW ON, RAYLEIGH!!!" Rayleigh replies calmly, "WELL... THAT WILL DO..." as Luffy wonders aloud, "...OR 'MASTER'I...THAT'S NO GOOD. I WANT TO HEAR AN 'I'M COUNTING ON YOU, RAYLEIGH-SAN'. OR PERHAPS 'RAYLEIGH-SENSEI'."
