Color title page: Chapter 582, "Luffy and Ace." The spread is labeled "One Piece Pirates Iron Soccer" and shows the Straw Hat Pirates playing a wild soccer game in a forest. Ace is caught upside down in the net with flames around him, while Luffy, Chopper, Robin, Nami, Franky, Sanji, Brook, Usopp, Zoro, and a large lion-like creature crowd the scene. Roughly two weeks have passed since the War at the Summit, and the influence of the war begins to appear around the world. Near a port in the West Blue, someone reports, "There's a pirate ship offshore of Las Camp in West Blue!!" Another asks, "What's the code of the nearest base!?" while a Marine replies, "All our battleships are deployed elsewhere!!!" Reinforcements are coming from the 80th Division, but the local position is compromised. Pirates celebrate the opening and shout, "Pack your bags, men!!! We're going to the Grand Line!!!" The war's aftermath has thinned Marine defenses and stirred ambitious pirates everywhere.

Ivankov prepares to leave Luffy in Jimbei's care. He says, "Well then, my duty to protect Strawhat boy ends here!! HIIHAA!!! Can you take care of things from here, Jimbei!?" Jimbei answers that he still cannot swim and cannot help much, but he will at least watch over Luffy until he recovers. Hancock watches silently nearby. Ivankov and the escaped prisoners cheer from their ship, shouting, "See you, Strawhat!!! Thank you for showing us the light of the surface! Give him our regards when he wakes up!!!" Others call, "Don't die on me, Strawhat!!!" and "If it's meant to be, we'll meet again!!!" as the ships part ways.

Removed from the chaos of the world, on Amazon Lily in the Calm Belt, a special exception is made for Law and his crew to help Luffy's recovery, allowing them to stay on the island. But Luffy awakens violently and screams, "Ace!!" and "Where's Ace!!? Ace!!!" He thrashes in panic while others shout, "Look out!! Calm down, Strawhat!!" and "Where are you going!? Keep it together!! Fire Fist is already..." The Heart Pirates and Kuja struggle to restrain him. Law says grimly that if Luffy reopens his wounds, he might really die this time, but Luffy is beyond reason and only calls for Ace.

At Kuja Castle on Amazon Lily, the women hear the news: "Luffy has awakened!" and "Hebihime!!" Hancock brightens and says, "Really!? Haa... That's great!! I want to see him right away!!" The other women cry happily, "Luffy!!" But Gloriosa stops Hancock, reminding her that everyone wants to see Luffy and that if the empress goes by herself she will set a bad example. She says letting the unknown men stay in the bay is already a huge exception on the Isle of Women. More importantly, the women worry that Luffy must eat, since he has barely eaten anything since returning.

Hancock seizes on the idea of feeding Luffy. She orders, "Make a mountain of food for him right away!!!" and the women answer, "Yes! With pleasure!!" Hancock imagines delivering it herself with hearts around her, saying, "And then... I'll deliver it myself..." but Gloriosa snaps, "You're still trying to go!!" The women insist she promised only to see Luffy once he fully recovered, and Hancock protests, "I can't wait!! I am the empress, don't order me around!!" Gloriosa calls her condition a terrible virus, but also reflects that Luffy survived Impel Down and Marine Headquarters like an ant in a great storm, asking what the heavens want with this man.

At a rocky area by the coast of Amazon Lily, the Heart Pirates wait at camp and nervously discuss the island. One says the empress told them not to leave the camp, while another wonders where Jimbei went with Luffy. They repeat rumors that any man who enters the Isle of Women gets turned to stone and is never heard from again, but also admit it might be worth risking because the Kuja women are beautiful and smell great. Two crewmen joke about peeking into the dream country filled with women, only for Law to scold them that it is the Isle of Women, not girl bears. Law apologizes while nearby Luffy, still bandaged, tears through the forest in a berserk rampage.

Luffy rampages through the rocky forest, breaking trees and stone while panting "Haa... haa..." His bandages are soaked and his fists are bloody from striking everything around him. For a moment he stands alone in the open, looking up through the cliffs and palm trees, and asks himself, "Where am I...!? Was I dreaming...?" Then his expression tightens as the memory returns. The page slows down after the outburst, showing Luffy surrounded by destruction he caused himself, physically alive but unable to escape the reality of Ace's death.

The memory of Ace dying in front of him crashes back into Luffy. He sees Akainu's magma fist through Ace's body and Ace's face as Ace says, "Sorry... Luffy... I couldn't let you save me..." Luffy screams, "AAH!!!" and clutches his head, unable to bear the image. He sees his own wounded hand and chest, then erupts again, shouting, "Go away!!! Go away!!!" as he destroys more of the forest. The page is a collage of the traumatic moment at Marineford and Luffy's present panic, showing that he is not only wounded but haunted.

Luffy's grief turns against his own body. He claws at his chest wound and tears his bandages open while screaming, "Uhhh!!!" Jimbei rushes in and shouts, "Luffy!!!" then yells, "Stop it!!!" as he grabs Luffy to restrain him. Luffy thrashes so violently that he throws Jimbei back through trees and rocks, still howling in pain. The page shows Luffy physically reopening the injuries Law fought to close, while Jimbei, himself badly wounded, tries to stop him from destroying himself in his grief.

Luffy continues to smash through the forest and scream, "Go away!!! Go away!!!" Every blow sends rocks and trees flying, and his cries echo over the island. Jimbei lands heavily and watches him from below, breathing hard and saying nothing. Luffy's rampage is not directed at an enemy; he is trying to drive away the memory of Ace's death and the pain of realizing it is real. The destruction spreads across the coast as the island trembles under his grief, while Jimbei waits for the right moment to reach him.

Jimbei finds Luffy exhausted and collapsed after the rampage. Luffy shouts "Zaaa...!!" and glares through tears, while Jimbei begins, "The war is over... Ace is..." Luffy cuts him off, screaming, "Don't say it!!! Don't say anything...!!!" Jimbei asks quietly, "If I die... would you mind looking after my little brother?" recalling Ace's request, and Luffy says he has pinched his cheek hard enough to tear it apart, meaning this is not a dream. Jimbei tells him that if it were a dream, he would have woken up already, and Luffy admits, "I'm not dreaming, am I...?"

As memories of Ace smiling and encouraging him pass through his mind, Luffy finally says the truth aloud: "Ace... is dead, isn't he!!?" The page flashes back to Ace telling him, "You've gotten stronger, Luffy," and Luffy promising, "I'll surpass you someday, Ace." In the present, Luffy sobs uncontrollably, tears and snot running down his face while blood stains his bandages. Jimbei answers, "Yes... he's dead...!!!" The confirmation breaks through Luffy's denial and forces him to face Ace's death directly.

Luffy's grief erupts across the island. Flashbacks show him as a boy asking, "Who the heck is Ace!?" and being told, "He's going to be your brother from now on." In the present, he screams, "Uwaa-aaaahhhh!!!" so loudly that the sound spreads across Amazon Lily's cliffs and forests. The images of young Luffy crying are layered with the adult Luffy sobbing into his hands. The page bridges the present with the start of the childhood memory, making Ace's death not only a battlefield loss but the loss of Luffy's first brother.

Ten years earlier in the East Blue, at a mountain pass on Mt. Corbo behind Windmill Village, Garp drags a young Luffy by the face while Luffy screams, "Owowowow!! Damn it, I'm rubber, why does it hurt!? Lemme go, Grampa!!" Garp scolds him, "You didn't just eat a Devil Fruit; now you've got that stupid mouth as well!!" Luffy declares, "What do you mean, 'Pirate King'!? Come on, Grampa. I'm going to become the Pirate King!!" Garp answers by striking him and roaring that this is his fault for leaving Luffy in that laid-back Windmill Village, and that Luffy and Ace are going to become the strongest Marines.

Garp arrives at the Mt. Corbo mountain bandits' hideout and punches the door, shouting, "Dadan!! Get out here!!!" Curly Dadan appears with her gang, shocked to see him: "G-Garp!! Come on, give me a break already!!" She complains that Ace is already ten years old and they will not be able to handle him much longer, telling Garp to take him back. The page introduces Dadan as the head of the Dadan family and Ace and Luffy's foster parent. Garp stands before her with young Luffy in tow, clearly intending to add another impossible child to her care.

Dadan panics when she realizes Garp wants her to take in another child: "You want me to take another one!!? And he's your... your grandson!!?" Garp calmly gives her a choice: "All right... I'll let you choose: go to jail, or look after the kid." He says he has overlooked as many crimes of hers as there are stars in the sky. Dadan protests that they already have a tough enough time with Ace. Just then Ace returns, and young Luffy sees him for the first time. Luffy blurts out, "Geeh!! It's spit!! That's disgusting!! Hey!! Who're you!!?" while the bandits shout, "Ace, you came back!!!"

Portgas D. Ace is introduced as he was ten years ago, sitting silently with a pipe across his lap and a hard, hostile expression. Garp tells Luffy, "That's Ace. He's three years older than you. You'll be living together from now on, so you better get along!" Luffy, still furious and confused, puffs up and says, "It's settled!!! I'll leave him with you!!!" Dadan asks, "What is?" while Ace says nothing. The chapter ends its story by showing the beginning of Luffy and Ace's relationship as strangers forced into the same mountain bandit household.

SBS extra page with fan art by Kobayashi Kunimitsu, Kanagawa. One reader asks Oda how to use a Nami body pillow before buying one. Oda jokes that he does not know, guesses you squeeze it against your groin when you sleep, and says people may think he understands every piece of One Piece merchandise, but the ones who check that stuff are staff members, especially a man named Konishi. He adds that as long as the people making and buying it are happy, he is satisfied, and mentions liking the Portrait of Pirates figure series even though they are expensive. Another reader asks seriously what types of tone Oda uses in One Piece, whether Shonen manga usually uses few tones, and whether he shades with tones. Oda says he uses three types: the famous IC screen tone, a heavy one, and one called "sand gura." He explains tones as transparent seals fixed over the manga, says hundreds exist but he mainly uses those three, and demonstrates shading by cutting a 22.5-degree angle against the dots, sharpening it, and layering it. For sunsets he does not use a gradation tone, preferring to pile on shading by hand, though computers can do it nowadays.
