The battlefield erupts after Squardo's sword pierces Whitebeard. The Marines, pirates, and Shichibukai all stare in shock, and the cry "Boss!!!" rings out. Luffy, Ace, Marco, Jinbe, Crocodile, Kizaru, Doflamingo, Moria, Hancock, Akainu, and others react to the impossible sight. Buggy and his followers are stunned, and someone yells, "Whitebeard!" while Squardo stands before the wounded old man.

The last broadcast screen shows the crowd at Sabaody reacting: "Whitebeard was... stabbed!!!" and "Yes, that's right. The one who stabbed Whitebeard was one of his subordinates." Luffy whispers, "Old man..." while Whitebeard sweats and glares. The spectators identify the attacker as "a pirate from the New World, Whirlpool Spider!!!" and cry, "Squardo!!!" Buggy's Den Den Mushi broadcast catches the moment as Squardo stands before Whitebeard.

Marco grabs Squardo and shouts, "Why did you do this!?" Squardo answers, "Shut up!!! You're the ones who forced us into this!!!" He accuses Whitebeard: "You've already made a deal with the Marines, haven't you!? They promised to let your Whitebeard Pirates and Ace live, right!!?" As the Pacifista attack continues behind the allies, the pirates around them reel and ask, "What's the meaning of this!?"

Squardo shouts that Whitebeard led them into a trap. He says they did not know anything about Ace being Gol D. Roger's son and tells Whitebeard, "You should know the hate I have for Roger!!!" Squardo explains that he was alone because the friends he fought beside for so long were obliterated by Roger. He recalls Whitebeard picking him up and demands, "Why didn't you say anything... about how Ace was Roger's son and you planned on making him the next Pirate King!?" He says Whitebeard betrayed him by pretending to be friendly with Ace even after Ace was captured.

Squardo's accusation continues over the still-working broadcast: "You sold out the 43 captains following you in exchange for Ace's life!!!" He says the Whitebeard Pirates and Ace would be spared because Whitebeard made a deal with Sengoku, while the allied crews came ready to throw away their lives for Ace and Whitebeard. He asks who the Marines are targeting now and answers, "It's us!!!" The allied pirates see that they are trapped by the frozen waves and cannot escape.

The allied crews panic as Marine attacks continue to focus on them. Someone asks Whitebeard, "Boss!!? Is that true!?" Squardo tells him, "I don't believe you!!!" and says that even if Whitebeard calls him a liar, the Marines' attacks will prove the truth: "Our attacks will be focused on you people!! We won't go after the Whitebeard Pirates...!!" More pirates are blasted aside, while others shout, "That's gotta be a lie!!" and "You say that, but look, we're getting targeted!"
The Sabaody audience hears the accusation and asks, "Whitebeard betrayed his allies to the Marines...!?" Whitebeard stands with the sword still in his chest, coughing blood and breathing hard. Marco shouts, "You idiot!!! You were fooled, Squardo!!! Why didn't you trust in the boss!!!" Squardo snaps back, "Don't talk to me like that, Marco!!!" A Marine commander yells, "Aokiji!!!!" and Aokiji uses his ice power to freeze the bay area near the encircling wall.
The watchers wonder whether the fight is over and whether everything was just a plot. Aokiji's ice spreads with "Butsu!!!" and the order comes: "Activate the siege walls!!!" The encircling wall begins rising around the bay. Crocodile is furious and shouts, "You're pathetic!!! Whitebeard!!! I didn't lose to such a weak man!!!" Ivankov calls, "Crocoboy...!!" and Jinbe says, "Crocodile..." A pirate notes that even in that state, Whitebeard should have been able to dodge if he had been on guard, meaning the problem must be his worsening condition. Another says, "Squardo... you attacked your own father with your blade... You're an unbelievably stupid son!"
Whitebeard pulls himself up despite the sword in his body. He remembers Akainu's words to Squardo, including the claim that he was a Marine rebel who would be killed by his own side unless he cooperated: "This plan. Whitebeard should bear the brunt of this battle!! We can't let this chance escape us. If you cooperate, you'll be saved." Whitebeard looks at Squardo and says, "But even so... I still love you..." Squardo is shaken as Whitebeard sees that his loyal, straightforward heart was dragged into darkness.

Whitebeard embraces Squardo instead of killing him. He says Akainu told him those lies because he knew how much Squardo hated Roger and how deeply that pain hurt Whitebeard too. Whitebeard tells him, "But Squardo, the son doesn't bear the sins of the father... What has Ace ever done to you...!?" Then he declares, "Be good to each other... Ace isn't the only special one. You are all my family..." Squardo cries out, realizing he was deceived. Whitebeard turns his anger toward Sengoku: "You haven't lost it, Sengoku... You've made a fine mess of things." He rejects the claim that he sold out his sons' lives.

The ice wall breaks open, creating a way out. A Marine realizes, "So he opened a path for the other pirates...!! He's shrewd." Whitebeard addresses everyone: "If you are pirates, choose who to believe yourselves!!!" The allies notice, "The ice wall is gone...!!" and that they can use the battleships to escape at any time. With a massive quake and shattered ice around Marineford, Whitebeard proves that he is not trapping his sons but giving them a choice.
Whitebeard faces Marineford and declares, "If you want to fight with me, be prepared to give up your lives!!!" His allies realize the accusation was a lie and shout that it was a Marine plot. Crocodile mutters about giving him a break: "I only know one man, with one heart... and you're the same..." Whitebeard raises his voice: "Here we go!!!" A Marine screams, "Get ready!!! The strongest man in the world is attacking!!!" Luffy, Ace, and the others watch as Whitebeard launches the counterattack.
